1	가나안 땅 탐지(신 1:19-33) 주께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다.	And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
2	"너는 사람들을 보내어, 내가 이스라엘 자손에게 준 가나안 땅을 탐지하게 하여라. 각 조상의 지파 가운데서 지도자를 한 사람씩 보내어라."	Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.
3	모세는 주의 분부대로 바란 광야에서 그들을 보냈다. 그 사람들은 모두 이스라엘 자손의 우두머리들이었다.	And Moses by the commandment of the Lord sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel.
4	그들의 이름은 다음과 같다. 르우벤 지파에서는 삭굴의 아들 삼무아요,	And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.
5	시므온 지파에서는 호리의 아들 사밧이요,	Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.
6	유다 지파에서는 여분네의 아들 갈렙이요,	Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
7	잇사갈 지파에서는 요셉의 아들 이갈이요,	Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.
8	에브라임 지파에서는 눈의 아들 호세아요,	Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun.
9	베냐민 지파에서는 라부의 아들 발디요,	Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.
10	스불론 지파에서는 소디의 아들 갓디엘이요,	Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.
11	요셉 지파 곧 므낫세 지파에서는 수시의 아들 갓디요,	Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.
12	단 지파에서는 그말리의 아들 암미엘이요,	Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.
13	아셀 지파에서는 미가엘의 아들 스둘이요,	Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.
14	납달리 지파에서는 웝시의 아들 나비요,	Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.
15	갓 지파에서는 마기의 아들 그우엘이다.	Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
16	모세가 땅을 탐지하라고 보낸 사람들의 이름이 이와 같다. 모세는 눈의 아들 호세아를 여호수아라고 불렀다.	These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.
17	모세는 가나안 땅을 탐지하라고 그들을 보내면서, 이렇게 일렀다. "너희는 저기 네겝 지방에도 올라가 보고, 산간지방에도 올라가 보아라.	And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:
18	그 땅이 어떠한지 탐지하여라. 그 땅에 사는 백성이 강한지 약한지, 적은지 많은지를 살펴보아라.	And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;
19	그리고 그들이 사는 그 땅이 좋은지 나쁜지, 그들이 사는 마을들은 장막촌인지 요새화된 성읍인지,	And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;
20	토지는 어떠한지, 기름진지 메마른지, 거기에 나무가 있는지 없는지를 살펴보아라. 담대하게 행동하여라. 그리고 그 땅의 과일을 가져 오너라." 때는 바야흐로 포도가 처음 익을 무렵이었다.	And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.
21	그들은 올라가서 신 광야에서부터 하맛 어귀 르홉에 이르기까지, 그 땅을 탐지하였다.	So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.
22	그들은 또 네겝 지방으로 올라가, 헤브론에 이르렀다. 거기에는 아낙 자손인 아히만 부족과 세새 부족과 달매 부족이 있었다. 헤브론은 이집트의 소안보다 일곱 해 먼저 세운 곳이다.	And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23	그들은 에스골 골짜기에 이르러, 거기에서 포도 한 송이가 달린 가지를 꺾어서, 두 사람이 막대기에 꿰어 둘러메었다. 석류와 무화과도 땄다.	And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.
24	이스라엘 자손이 거기에서 포도송이를 땄기 때문에, 사람들은 그 곳을 가리켜 에스골 골짜기라고 불렀다.	The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
25	그들은 그 땅을 탐지하러 갔다가 사십 일 만에 돌아왔다.	And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.
26	그들은 곧바로 바란 광야 가데스에 있는 모세와 아론과 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중에게로 갔다. 그들은 모세와 아론과 온 회중에게 보고하면서, 그 땅에서 가져 온 과일을 보여 주었다.	And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.
27	그들은 모세에게 다음과 같이 설명하였다. "우리더러 가라고 하신 그 땅에, 우리가 갔었습니다. 그 곳은 정말 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 곳입니다. 이것이 바로 그 땅에서 난 과일입니다.	And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
28	그렇지만 그 땅에 살고 있는 백성은 강하고, 성읍들은 견고한 요새처럼 되어 있고, 매우 큽니다. 또한 거기에서 우리는 아낙 자손도 보았습니다.	Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
29	아말렉 사람은 네겝 지방에 살고 있고, 헷 사람과 여부스 사람과 아모리 사람은 산악지대에 살고 있습니다. 가나안 사람은 바닷가와 요단 강 가에 살고 있습니다."	The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.
30	갈렙이 모세 앞에서 백성을 진정시키면서 격려하였다. "올라갑시다. 올라가서 그 땅을 점령합시다. 우리는 반드시 그 땅을 점령할 수 있습니다."	And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.
31	그러나 그와 함께 올라갔다 온 사람들은 "우리는 도저히 그 백성에게로 쳐올라가지 못합니다. 그 백성은 우리보다 더 강합니다" 하고 말하였다.	But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
32	그러면서 그 탐지한 땅에 대하여 나쁜 소문을 퍼뜨렸다. 그들은 이스라엘 자손에게 그 땅에 대해 이렇게 말하였다. "우리가 탐지하려고 두루 다녀 본 그 땅은, 그 곳에 사는 사람들을 삼키는 땅이다. 또한 우리가 그 땅에서 본 백성은, 키가 장대 같은 사람들이다.	And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.
33	거기에서 우리는 또 네피림 자손을 보았다. 아낙 자손은 네피림의 한 분파다. 우리는 스스로가 보기에도 메뚜기 같았지만, 그들의 눈에도 그렇게 보였을 것이다."	And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
