1	라헬은 자기와 야곱 사이에 아이가 없으므로, 언니를 시새우며, 야곱에게 말하였다. “나도 아이 좀 낳게 해주셔요. 그렇지 않으면, 죽어 버리겠어요.”	And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.
2	야곱이 라헬에게 화를 내면서 말하였다. “내가 하나님이라도 된단 말이오? 당신이 임신할 수 없게 하신 분이 하나님이신데, 나더러 어떻게 하라는 말이오?”	And Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God’s stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?
3	라헬이 말하였다. “나에게 몸종 빌하가 있어요. 빌하와 동침하셔요. 그가 아이를 낳아서 나에게 안겨 주면, 빌하의 몸을 빌려서 나도 당신의 집안을 이어나가겠어요.”	And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.
4	라헬이 자기의 몸종 빌하를 남편에게 주어서 아내로 삼게 하니, 야곱이 빌하와 동침하였다.	And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her.
5	마침내 빌하가 임신을 하여, 야곱과 빌하 사이에 아들이 태어났다.	And Bilhah conceived, and bare Jacob a son.
6	라헬은 “하나님이 나의 호소를 들으시고, 나의 억울함을 풀어 주시려고, 나에게 아들을 주셨구나!” 하면서, 그 아이 이름을 단이라고 하였다.	And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan.
7	라헬의 몸종인 빌하가 또 임신을 하여 야곱과의 사이에서 두 번째로 아들을 낳았다.	And Bilhah Rachel’s maid conceived again, and bare Jacob a second son.
8	라헬은 “내가 언니와 크게 겨루어서, 마침내 이겼다” 하면서, 그 아이 이름을 납달리라고 하였다.	And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali.
9	레아는, 자기가 다시는 더 아기를 낳을 수 없다는 것을 알고서, 자기의 몸종 실바를 데려다가 야곱에게 주어서, 아내로 삼게 하였다.	When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife.
10	레아의 몸종 실바와 야곱 사이에서, 아들이 태어났다.	And Zilpah Leah’s maid bare Jacob a son.
11	레아는 “내가 복을 받았구나” 하면서, 그 아이 이름을 갓이라고 하였다.	And Leah said, A troop cometh: and she called his name Gad.
12	레아의 몸종 실바와 야곱 사이에서 두 번째로 아들이 태어났다.	And Zilpah Leah’s maid bare Jacob a second son.
13	레아는 “행복하구나, 여인들이 나를 행복하다고 말하리라” 하면서, 그 아이 이름을 아셀이라고 하였다.	And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.
14	보리를 거두어들일 때에, 르우벤이 들에 나갔다가, 자귀나무를 발견하여, 어머니 레아에게 가져다 주니, 라헬이 레아에게 말하였다. “언니, 아들이 가져온 자귀나무를 조금만 나눠 줘요.”	And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son’s mandrakes.
15	레아가 라헬에게 말하였다. “내 남편을 차지한 것만으로는 부족하냐? 그래서 내 아들이 가져온 자귀나무까지 가져 가려는 것이냐?” 라헬이 말하였다. “좋아요. 그럼, 언니 아들이 가져온 자귀나무를 나에게 주어요. 그 대신에 오늘 밤에는 그이가 언니하고 함께 자도록 하지요.”	And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes.
16	그 날 저녁에 야곱이 들에서 돌아올 때에, 레아가 그를 맞으러 나가서 말하였다. “당신은 오늘 밤에는 나의 방으로 드셔야 해요. 나의 아들이 가져온 자귀나무를 라헬에게 주고, 그 대신에 당신이 나의 방으로 드시게 하기로 했어요.” 그 날 밤에 야곱은 레아와 함께 잤다.	And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
17	하나님이 레아의 호소를 들어 주셔서, 레아가 임신을 하였고, 야곱과의 사이에서 다섯 번째 아들을 낳았다.	And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bare Jacob the fifth son.
18	레아는 “내가 나의 몸종을 나의 남편에게 준 값을 하나님이 갚아 주셨구나” 하면서, 그 아이 이름을 잇사갈이라고 하였다.	And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Issachar.
19	레아가 다시 임신을 하여서, 야곱과의 사이에 여섯 번째 아들이 태어났다.	And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son.
20	레아는 “하나님이 나에게 이렇게 좋은 선물을 주셨구나. 내가 아들을 여섯이나 낳았으니, 이제부터는 나의 남편이 나에게 잘 해주겠지” 하면서, 그 아이 이름을 스불론이라고 하였다.	And Leah said, God hath endued me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun.
21	얼마 뒤에 레아가 딸을 낳고, 그 아이 이름을 디나라고 하였다.	And afterwards she bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah.
22	하나님은 라헬도 기억하셨다. 하나님이 라헬의 호소를 들으시고, 그의 태를 열어 주셨다.	And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.
23	그가 임신을 하여서 아들을 낳으니, “하나님이 나의 부끄러움을 벗겨 주셨구나” 하고 생각하였다.	And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:
24	라헬은 그 아이의 이름을 지을 때에 “주님께서 나에게 또 다른 아들 하나를 더 주시면 좋겠다” 하는 뜻으로, 그 아이 이름을 요셉이라고 하였다.	And she called his name Joseph; and said, The Lord shall add to me another son.
25	야곱이 라반과 흥정하다 라헬이 요셉을 낳은 뒤에, 야곱이 라반에게 말하였다. “제가 고향 땅으로 돌아갈 수 있도록, 저를 보내 주십시오.	And it came to pass, when Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.
26	장인 어른의 일을 해 드리고 얻은 저의 처들과 자식들도, 제가 데리고 가게 허락하여 주십시오. 제가 장인 어른의 일을 얼마나 많이 해 드렸는가 하는 것은, 장인 어른께서 잘 아십니다.”	Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.
27	라반이 그에게 말하였다. “자네가 나를 좋아하면, 여기에 머물러 있기를 바라네. 주님께서 자네를 보시고 나에게 복을 주신 것을, 내가 점을 쳐 보고서 알았네.”	And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake.
28	라반은 또 덧붙였다. “자네의 품삯은 자네가 정하게. 정하는 그대로 주겠네.”	And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.
29	야곱이 그에게 말하였다. “제가 장인 어른의 일을 어떻게 해 드리고, 장인 어른의 가축 떼를 얼마나 잘 보살폈는지는, 장인 어른께서 잘 아십니다.	And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me.
30	제가 여기에 오기 전에는 장인 어른의 소유가 얼마 되지 않았으나, 이제 떼가 크게 불어났습니다. 주님께서는, 제가 하는 수고를 보시고서, 장인 어른에게 복을 주셨습니다. 그러나 이제는, 제가 저의 살림을 챙겨야 할 때가 되었다고 봅니다.”	For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the Lord hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?
31	라반이 물었다. “그러면 내가 자네에게 무엇을 주면 좋겠는가?” 야곱이 대답하였다. “무엇을 달라는 것이 아닙니다. 다만, 저에게 한 가지 일만 허락하여 주시면, 제가 장인 어른의 가축 떼를 계속 먹이고 돌보겠습니다.	And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:
32	오늘, 제가 장인 어른의 가축 떼 사이로 두루 다니면서, 모든 양 떼에서 얼룩진 것들과 점이 있는 것과 모든 검은 새끼 양을 가려내고, 염소 떼에서도 점이 있는 것들과 얼룩진 것들을 가려낼 터이니, 그것들을 저에게 삯으로 주십시오.	I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my hire.
33	제가 정직하다는 것은, 훗날 장인 어른께서 저에게 삯으로 주신 가축 떼를 확인하여 보실 때에 증명될 것입니다. 제가 가진 것 가운데서, 얼룩지지 않은 양이나 점이 없는 양이 있든지, 검은 색이 아닌 새끼 양이 있으면, 그것들은 모두 제가 훔친 것이 될 것입니다.”	So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me.
34	라반이 말하였다. “그러세. 자네가 말한 대로 하겠네.”	And Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.
35	그러나 라반은 이렇게 말해 놓고서도, 바로 그 날로 숫염소 가운데서 줄무늬가 있는 것과 점이 있는 것을 가려내고, 또 모든 암염소 가운데서도 흰 바탕에 얼룩이 진 것과 점이 있는 것과 모든 검은 새끼 양을 가려내어, 자기의 아들들에게 주었다.	And he removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
36	그런 다음에 라반은, 야곱이 있는 데서 사흘 길을 더 나가서, 자기와 야곱 사이의 거리를 그만큼 뜨게 하였다. 야곱은 라반의 나머지 양 떼를 쳤다.	And he set three days’ journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.
37	야곱은, 미루나무와 감복숭아나무와 플라타너스 나무에서 푸른 가지들을 꺾어서 껍질을 벗긴 다음에, 벗긴 가지에 흰 무늬를 냈다.	And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut tree; and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.
38	야곱은, 껍질을 벗긴 그 흰 무늬 가지들을 물 먹이는 구유 안에 똑바로 세워 놓고, 양 떼가 와서 물을 먹을 때에, 바로 눈 앞에 세워 놓은 그 가지들을 볼 수 있게 하였다. 양들은 물을 먹으러 와서, 거기에서 교미를 하였다.	And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.
39	양들은, 껍질 벗긴 그 나뭇가지 앞에서 교미를 하고서, 줄무늬가 있거나 얼룩이 지거나 점이 있는 양을 낳았다.	And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringstraked, speckled, and spotted.
40	야곱은 이런 새끼 양들을 따로 떼어 놓았다. 라반의 가축 떼 가운데서, 줄무늬가 있거나 검은 양들은 다 가려냈다. 야곱은 이렇게 자기 가축 떼를 따로 가려내서, 라반의 가축 떼와 섞이지 않게 하였다.	And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto Laban’s cattle.
41	야곱은, 튼튼한 암컷들이 교미할 때에는, 물 먹이는 구유에 껍질 벗긴 가지들을 놓아서, 그 가지 앞에서 교미하도록 하곤 하였다.	And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.
42	그러나 약한 것들이 교미할 때에는, 그 가지들을 거기에 놓지 않았다. 그래서 약한 것들은 라반에게로 가게 하고, 튼튼한 것들은 야곱에게로 오게 하였다.	But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.
43	이렇게 하여, 야곱은 아주 큰 부자가 되었다. 야곱은 가축 떼뿐만 아니라, 남종과 여종, 낙타와 나귀도 많이 가지게 되었다.	And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.
