1	느부갓네살 왕궁의 젊은이들 유다의 여호야김 왕이 왕위에 오른 지 삼 년이 되는 해에, 바빌로니아의 느부갓네살 왕이 예루살렘으로 쳐들어와서 성을 포위하였다.	In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2	주님께서 유다의 여호야김 왕과 하나님의 성전 기물 가운데서 일부를 느부갓네살의 손에 넘겨 주셨다. 그는 그것들을 바빌로니아 땅, 자기가 섬기는 신의 신전으로 가지고 가서 그 신의 보물 창고에 넣어 두었다.	And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3	그 때에 왕은 아스부나스 환관장에게 명령하여, 이스라엘 백성, 특히 왕과 귀족의 자손 가운데서,	And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
4	몸에 흠이 없고, 용모가 잘생기고, 모든 일을 지혜롭게 처리할 수 있으며, 지식이 있고, 통찰력이 있고, 왕궁에서 왕을 모실 능력이 있는 소년들을 데려오게 하여서, 그들에게 바빌로니아의 언어와 문학을 가르치게 하였다.	Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5	또한 왕은 왕궁에서 날마다 일정한 양을 정해서 음식과 포도주를 그들에게 공급하도록 해주면서, 삼 년 동안 교육시킨 뒤에, 왕을 모시도록 하였다.	And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6	그들 가운데는 유다 사람인 다니엘과 하나냐와 미사엘과 아사랴가 있었다.	Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
7	환관장이 그들에게 이름을 새로 지어 주었는데, 다니엘은 벨드사살이라고 하고, 하나냐는 사드락이라고 하고, 미사엘은 메삭이라고 하고, 아사랴는 아벳느고라고 하였다.	Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed–nego.
8	다니엘은 왕이 내린 음식과 포도주로 자기를 더럽히지 않겠다고 마음을 먹고, 환관장에게 자기를 더럽히지 않을 수 있도록 해 달라고 간청하였다.	But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9	하나님은 다니엘이 환관장에게서 호의와 동정을 받도록 해주셨다.	Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
10	환관장이 다니엘에게 말하였다. “너희가 먹고 마실 것을 정해 주신 분은 나의 상전이신 임금님이시다. 임금님께서, 너희의 얼굴이 너희와 같은 나이의 젊은이들보다 더 상해 있는 것을 보시게 될까 두렵다. 그렇게 되면, 너희 때문에 내 목숨이 임금님 앞에서 위태롭게 될 것이다.”	And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
11	다니엘은 감독관에게로 갔다. 그 감독관은 환관장이 임명한 사람으로서, 다니엘과 하나냐와 미사엘과 아사랴를 감독하는 일을 맡은 사람이다. 다니엘이 그 감독관에게 요청하였다.	Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12	“부디 이 종들을 열흘 동안만 시험하여 보시기 바랍니다. 우리에게 채소를 주어 먹게 하고, 물을 주어 마시게 하여 보시기 바랍니다.	Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13	그런 다음에, 우리의 얼굴빛과 왕이 내린 음식을 먹는 젊은이들의 얼굴빛을 비교하여 보시고, 이 종들의 요청을 처리하여 주시기 바랍니다.”	Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
14	그래서 감독관은 그 말을 따라서, 열흘 동안 시험해 보았다.	So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15	열흘이 지났을 때에 보니, 그들의 얼굴빛이 왕이 내린 음식을 먹은 젊은이들의 얼굴빛보다 좋고 건강하여 보였다.	And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.
16	감독관은 그들에게 지정된 음식과 마실 포도주를 주지 않고, 채소를 계속 주어서 먹게 하였다.	Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
17	하나님은 이 네 젊은이들이 지식을 얻게 하시고, 문학과 학문에 능통하게 하셨다. 그 밖에도 다니엘에게는 환상과 온갖 꿈을 해석하는 능력까지 주셨다.	As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18	왕이 정하여 놓은 삼 년 동안의 교육이 끝나는 날, 환관장은 교육을 받은 젊은이들을 모두 느부갓네살 앞으로 데리고 갔다.	Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19	왕이 그들과 말하여 보니, 그들 가운데서 다니엘과 하나냐와 미사엘과 아사랴가 가장 뛰어났으므로, 그들로 왕을 모시게 하였다.	And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
20	왕은 그들에게 온갖 지혜나 지식에 관한 문제를 물어 보고서, 그들이 전국에 있는 어떤 마술사나 주술가보다도, 열 배는 더 낫다는 것을 알았다.	And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
21	다니엘은 고레스 왕 일년까지 왕궁에 머물러 있었다.	And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
