1 Jos siis on jotakin kehoitusta Kristuksessa, jos jotakin rakkauden lohdutusta, jos jotakin Hengen yhteyttä, jos jotakin sydämellisyyttä ja laupeutta, If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,

19 Toivon Herrassa Jeesuksessa pian voivani lähettää Timoteuksen teidän tykönne, että minäkin tulisin rohkaistuksi, saatuani tietää, kuinka teidän on. But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.
20 Sillä minulla ei ole ketään samanmielistä, joka vilpittömästi huolehtisi teidän tilastanne; For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.

Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.

28 Lähetän hänet sentähden kiiruimmiten, että te hänet nähdessänne taas iloitsisitte ja minäkin olisin murheettomampi. I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
29 Ottakaa siis hänet vastaan Herrassa kaikella ilolla, ja pitäkää semmoisia kunniassa; Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation:
30 sillä Kristuksen työn tähden hän joutui aivan kuoleman partaalle, kun pani henkensä alttiiksi tehdäkseen minulle sen palveluksen, mitä te ette voineet tehdä. Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.
