1	“부조리가 있었어요. 내가 해 아래에서 보았지요. 사람이 견디기 어려운 큰 부조리였지요.	There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:
2	어떤 사람이 있었어요. 하나님이 재산과 재물과 명예를 주셔서 그가 원하는 것은 무엇이든 모자람이 없었어요. 그러나 하나님은 그가 이런 것을 누리도록 허락하지 않으셨어요. 결국 다른 사람이 그것을 누리게 되었어요. 이것은 허무한 일이며 끔찍한 부조리지요.	A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
3	그가 자녀 백 명을 낳고 오래도록 산다고 해 봐요. 또 아무리 오래 산다고 해도 그 좋은 것으로 만족하지 못한다면요. 묻힐 자리조차 없다면요. 그러면 나는 이렇게 말하지요. ‘그 사람보다는 죽어서 나온 아이가 차라리 낫다.’	If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
4	아이는 허무하게 왔다가 어둠 속으로 가고, 그 이름은 어둠 속에 묻히지요.	For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
5	해를 본 적도 없고 알지도 못하지만, 아이는 그 사람보다 편히 쉬지요.	Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.
6	그가 천 년을 두 번 살아도 좋은 것을 보지 못한다면, 결국에는 모두 한곳으로 가는 것 아닌가요?	Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
7	사람은 먹으려고 온갖 수고를 하지만, 식욕은 채워지지 않지요.	All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
8	지혜로운 사람이 어리석은 사람보다 더 나은 것이 무엇인가요? 가난한 사람이 삶을 어떻게 살아야 하는지 안다고 해서 무슨 쓸모가 있나요?	For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
9	눈으로 보면서 사는 것이 마음 내키는 대로 사는 것보다 더 낫지만요. 이것 또한 허무하고 바람을 붙잡으려는 것이지요.	Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
10	지금 일어나는 일은 무엇이든지 이미 그 이름으로 불려 왔지요. 사람이 무엇인지도 알려져 있었고요. 사람은 자기보다 더 강한 분한테 따질 수 없어요.	That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.
11	말을 많이 해서 더 허무하게 되는 경우도 있지요. 그러면 사람에게 무엇이 남을까요?	Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
12	사람에게 좋은 것이 무엇인지를 누가 알고 있을까요, 아주 짧고 허무한 삶의 나날에요? 사람은 그 나날을 그림자처럼 보내지요. 누가 사람에게 이야기해 줄 수 있을까요? 그가 사라진 뒤에 해 아래에서 무슨 일이 일어날지를요?”	For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
