1	사무엘이 다윗에게 기름붓다 여호와께서 사무엘에게 말씀하셨다. “언제까지 너는 사울이 죽기나 한 듯이 슬퍼하려느냐? 바로 내가 그를 버려서 그가 이스라엘 위에 임금이 되지 못하게 했다. 너는 뿔에 기름을 가득 넣어 떠나라. 내가 너를 보낸다, 베들레헴 사람 이새에게로! 그의 아들 중에서 나를 위한 임금을 내가 봐 두었다.”	And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Beth–lehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
2	사무엘이 말했다. “어떻게 제가 가겠습니까? 사울이 소식을 들으면 저를 죽이려 할 것입니다.” 그러나 여호와께서 말씀하셨다. “너는 네 손으로 어린 암소를 끌고 가서 이렇게 말해라. ‘여호와께 희생제물을 바치려고 왔습니다.’	And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.
3	그러고는 이새를 희생제사에 부르도록 해라. 그러면 내가 직접 너에게 네가 해야 할 일을 알려 줄 것이다. 너는 나를 위해, 내가 너에게 일러 주는 사람에게 기름을 부어 주도록 해라.”	And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
4	사무엘은 여호와께서 말씀하신 대로 했다. 그가 베들레헴으로 들어가자 그 도시의 원로들이 떨면서 그를 맞이했다. 그들이 말했다. “안녕하십니까? 어르신이 오시다니요!”	And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Beth–lehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
5	그가 대답했다. “안녕하십니까? 여호와께 희생제물을 바치려고 왔습니다. 여러분은 스스로 거룩하게 하시고 나와 같이 가서 희생제물을 바치도록 하십시다.” 그러고는 이새와 그의 아들들도 거룩하게 하고 그들을 희생제사에 불렀다.	And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6	그들이 들어올 때에 사무엘이 엘리압을 보고는 생각했다. ‘그분께 기름부음받은 사람이 정말로 여호와 앞에 있구나!’	And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.
7	그런데 여호와께서 사무엘에게 말씀하셨다. “그의 겉모습과 큰 키만 눈여겨보지 마라. 내가 그를 버렸으니까. 나는 사람이 보는 것처럼 보지 않아. 사람은 눈에 보이는 것을 보지만, 여호와는 마음을 보거든.”	But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
8	이새가 아비나답을 불러 사무엘 앞으로 지나가게 했다. 사무엘이 말했다. “이 사람도 뽑지 않으셨소, 여호와께서는.”	Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
9	이새가 삼마를 지나가게 했다. 사무엘이 말했다. “이 사람도 뽑지 않으셨소, 여호와께서는.”	Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
10	이새가 일곱 아들을 사무엘 앞으로 지나가게 했다. 사무엘이 이새에게 말했다. “여호와께서 뽑지 않으셨소, 이 사람들은요.”	Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.
11	사무엘이 이새에게 물었다. “이 젊은이들이 전부인가요?” 이새가 대답했다. “아직 남아 있어요, 막내가. 저기, 양 떼를 돌보고 있습니다.” 사무엘이 이새에게 말했다. “사람을 보내 그를 데려오세요. 그가 여기 올 때까지 우리는 밥상에 둘러앉지 않을 테니까요.”	And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
12	이새가 사람을 보내 그를 데려왔다. 그는 불그스름한 데다 눈이 아름다웠다. 보기 좋은 사람이었다. 여호와께서 말씀하셨다. “일어나 그에게 기름을 부어라. 바로 이 사람이니까!”	And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
13	사무엘이 기름 든 뿔을 들고 형제들 가운데서 그에게 기름을 부었다. 여호와의 영이 그날부터 계속 다윗의 안으로 밀고 들어가셨다. 사무엘은 일어나 라마로 갔다.	Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
14	다윗이 사울의 시중을 들게 되다 여호와의 영이 사울을 떠났다. 그리고 여호와께로부터 나온 나쁜 영이 그를 깜짝깜짝 놀라게 하곤 했다.	But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.
15	사울의 신하들이 그에게 말했다. “보십시오. 하나님이 다루시는 나쁜 영이 임금님을 깜짝깜짝 놀라게 하고 있습니다.	And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
16	우리 주인이신 임금님, 부디 임금님 앞에 있는 신하들에게 말씀하십시오, 기타를 연주할 줄 아는 사람을 찾아 오라고요. 하나님이 다스리시는 나쁜 영이 임금님 위에 있을 때 그의 손이 연주할 것입니다. 그러면 임금님이 좋아지실 것입니다.”	Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
17	사울이 신하들에게 말했다. “날 위해 찾아 보시오, 잘 연주하는 사람을. 내게 데려오시오.”	And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
18	젊은 신하들 가운데 한 사람이 대답하여 말했다. “예, 제가 본 대로 베들레헴 사람 이새의 아들 하나가 연주를 할 줄 압니다. 용감한 사람이자 전쟁에 유능한 사람입니다. 말도 조심성 있게 하고 잘생긴 사람입니다. 그리고 여호와께서 함께하시는 사람입니다.”	Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth–lehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.
19	사울이 이새에게 심부름꾼들을 보내어 말했다. “내게 그대의 아들 다윗을 보내 주시오. 지금 양 떼 가운데 있지요.”	Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.
20	이새가 나귀, 빵, 포도주 한 부대, 어린 염소 한 마리를 골라서 자기 아들 다윗 편에 사울에게 보냈다.	And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
21	다윗이 사울에게 와서 그의 시중을 들었다. 사울은 다윗을 무척 사랑했다. 그래서 다윗은 그의 무기를 들고 따르는 사람이 되었다.	And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
22	사울이 이새에게 사람을 보내 말했다. “다윗이 꼭 나의 시중을 들도록 해 주세요. 그가 내 눈에 들었으니까요.”	And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
23	하나님이 다루시는 나쁜 영이 사울 위에 있을 때면, 다윗이 기타를 가져다가 손으로 연주했다. 그러면 사울이 편안해지고 좋아졌다. 그에게서 나쁜 영이 물러갔다.	And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
