1	사울은 몇 살엔가 임금이 되어 2년 동안 이스라엘을 다스렸다.	Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,
2	사울이 필리스티아와 싸우다 사울이 자신을 위해 이스라엘에서 3,000명을 뽑았다. 사울과 함께 2,000명이 믹마스와 베델산에 있었고, 1,000명은 요나단과 함께 베냐민의 기브아에 있었다. 나머지 사람들은 내보내어 저마다 자기 천막집으로 가게 했다.	Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Beth–el, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
3	요나단이 게바에 있는 필리스티아 주둔군을 공격했다. 필리스티아 사람들이 이 소식을 들었다. 사울은 온 땅에 뿔나팔을 불고는 “히브리 사람들은 들으시오!” 하고 말했다.	And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
4	온 이스라엘이 들은 말은 이러했다. “사울이 필리스티아 주둔군을 공격했습니다! 또한 이제 이스라엘은 필리스티아 사람들한테 몹시 밉보이게 되었습니다!” 그래서 불러서 모인 사람들이 사울을 따라 길갈로 갔다.	And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.
5	필리스티아 사람들이 모였다. 이스라엘과 전투를 벌이려는 것이었다. 30,000대의 전투수레와 6,000명의 마병과 바닷가 모래처럼 많은 사람들이었다. 그들이 올라와 믹마스 곧 베다웬 동쪽에 진을 쳤다.	And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth–aven.
6	이스라엘은 병사들이 압박을 받아 자신들이 어려움에 빠진 것을 알게 되었다. 그래서 병사들은 동굴이나 덤불이나 바위나 구덩이나 웅덩이에 숨었다.	When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
7	히브리 사람들은 요르단강을 건너 갓과 길르앗 땅으로 가 버렸다. 사울은 아직 길갈에 있었다. 병사들이 모두 그의 뒤에서 벌벌 떨었다.	And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
8	사울은 사무엘이 약속한 때까지 7일을 기다렸다. 그러나 사무엘은 길갈에 오지 않았고, 사람들은 그를 버리고 흩어졌다.	And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
9	사울이 말했다. “다태우는제물(번제물)과 평화제물(화목제물)을 나에게로 가져오세요.” 그러고는 다태우는제물(번제물)을 올려 드렸다.	And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.
10	그가 다태우는제물(번제물)을 다 올려 드리고 나니, 저기, 사무엘이 오고 있는 것이 아닌가! 사울이 나가 그를 맞이하고 축복의 인사말을 건넸다.	And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
11	사무엘이 물었다. “무엇을 하신 겁니까?” 사울이 대답했다. “제가 보니 백성이 저를 버리고 흩어졌습니다. 어르신은 약속한 때에 오지도 않으시고 필리스티아 사람들은 믹마스에 모여 있었습니다.	And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;
12	그래서 저는 생각했습니다. ‘이제는 필리스티아 사람들이 나를 공격하러 길갈로 내려올 거야. 그런데 여호와의 노여움을 내가 누그러뜨려 드리지 못했구나.’ 그래서 용기를 냈습니다. 제가 다태우는제물(번제물)을 감히 올려 드린 것입니다.”	Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the Lord: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
13	사무엘이 사울에게 말했다. “당신은 어리석게 처신했군요. 여호와 당신의 하나님께서 당신에게 하신 명령을 듣지 않았군요. 그랬더라면 이제 당신의 왕국을 여호와께서 이스라엘에 영원히 굳게 세워 주셨을 텐데요.	And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the Lord thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the Lord have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
14	이제는 당신의 왕국이 서지 못할 겁니다. 여호와께서는 자신을 위해 자신과 같은 마음을 지닌 사람을 찾으셨습니다. 그를 여호와께서 자신의 백성을 위한 지도자로 정해 두셨습니다. 여호와께서 당신에게 명령하신 것을 당신이 따르지 않았기 때문입니다.”	But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the Lord commanded thee.
15	사무엘이 일어나 길갈에서 베냐민의 기브아로 올라갔다. 사울이 그와 같이 있었던 병사들을 점검해 보았다. 600명쯤 되었다.	And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.
16	사울과 그의 아들 요나단, 또 그들과 같이 있던 백성은 베냐민의 게바에 머무르고 있었다. 필리스티아 사람들은 믹마스에 진을 쳤다.	And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
17	돌격대가 필리스티아 진영에서 나왔다. 세 부대였다. 한 부대는 수알 땅으로 가는 오브라 길로 향했다.	And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:
18	한 부대는 벳호론 길로 향했다. 한 부대는 스보임 골짜기가 광야 쪽으로 내려다보이는 국경 길로 향했다.	And another company turned the way to Beth–horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19	이스라엘 온 땅에서는 무기 만드는 사람을 찾을 수 없었다. 필리스티아 사람들이 이렇게 말했기 때문이다. “히브리 사람들이 칼이나 창을 만들지 못하도록 해야 해!”	Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:
20	그래서 온 이스라엘은 저마다 쟁기나 곡괭이나 도끼나 낫을 날카롭게 하려면 필리스티아로 내려가야 했다.	But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.
21	쟁기나 곡괭이나 쇠스랑이나 도끼나 찌르는 막대기의 날을 날카롭게 하는 값으로는 은 8그램이 들었다.	Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.
22	전쟁할 때에 사울과 요나단의 병사 그 누구의 손에도 칼이나 창이 없었다. 사울과 그의 아들 요나단에게만 있었다.	So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
23	필리스티아 사람들의 초소가 믹마스 어귀로 나와 있었다.	And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
