1	자기소개와 인사 베드로입니다. 예수 그리스도의 사도입니다. 선택받은 분들, 곧 폰토스, 갈라티아, 카파도키아, 속주 아시아와 비티니아에 흩어져 사는 체류자들인 여러분에게 이 편지를 보냅니다.	Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
2	여러분이 선택받은 것은 하나님 아버지의 미리 아심을 따라서 성령님의 거룩하게 하심으로 된 일입니다. 여러분으로 하여금 순종하게 하시고 예수 그리스도의 피 뿌림에 참여하도록 하시기 위해서였지요. 은혜와 평화가 여러분에게 더해지기를 빕니다.	Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
3	살아 있는 희망 가운데서 사는 믿음의 삶 찬양받으시기를 빕니다, 하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지는! 하나님은 자신의 크고 한결같은 사랑을 따라 우리를 다시 태어나게 하셨습니다. 그리하여 우리가 살아 있는 희망을 갖게 하셨습니다. 죽은 사람들 가운데서 예수 그리스도께서 부활하심을 통해서요.	Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4	또 썩지 않고 더럽혀지지 않고 시들지 않는 상속을 받게 하셨습니다. 그것은 여러분을 위해 하늘에 보존되어 있습니다.	To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5	여러분은 하나님이 능력으로 지켜 주셔서 믿음을 통해 구원에 이르도록 해 주신 분들입니다. 그 구원은 마지막 때에 드러나도록 준비되어 있는 것입니다.	Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
6	이러한 까닭에 여러분은 기뻐 뜁니다. 아직은 잠깐 동안 여러분이 여러 가지 시련 속에서 슬픔을 당할 수밖에 없지만 말입니다.	Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
7	시련을 통해 여러분의 믿음을 검증하는 것은 그 믿음을 없어질 금보다 더 귀한 것이 되게 하기 위해서입니다. 또 그 믿음이 불로 정련되어 예수 그리스도께서 나타나실 때에 칭찬과 영광과 명예를 얻게 하기 위해서입니다.	That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
8	여러분은 뵙지는 못했지만 그리스도를 사랑합니다. 지금도 뵙지는 못하고 있지만, 그분을 믿으며 기뻐 뜁니다. 말로 표현할 수 없는, 영광스러운 기쁨으로 그렇게 하고 있습니다.	Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
9	여러분의 믿음의 결과로 여러분은 영혼의 구원을 받기 때문입니다.	Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
10	그 구원에 대하여 예언자들이 꼼꼼히 찾아보고 꼼꼼히 헤아려 보았습니다. 곧 여러분에게 내릴 은혜에 대해 예언했던 예언자들이요.	Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
11	그들은 자기들 안에 계신 그리스도의 영이 그리스도께 닥칠 고난과 그 뒤에 올 영광을 미리 증언하신 내용을 탐구하였습니다. 그것이 누구에 관한 것인지, 어느 때에 관한 것인지를 말입니다.	Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
12	그들이 받은 계시에 따르면, 그들이 섬긴 그 일들은 자기 자신들을 위한 것이 아니라 여러분을 위한 것이었습니다. 그 일들은 이제 여러분에게 알려졌습니다. 하나님이 하늘로부터 내보내신 성령님을 힘입어 여러분에게 좋은 소식을 전해 준 사람들을 통해서요. 그 일들은 천사들도 몹시 들여다보고 싶어 하는 것입니다.	Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
13	모든 행실에서 거룩한 사람이 되라 따라서 여러분은 마음의 허리를 졸라매고 정신을 맑게 하십시오. 예수 그리스도께서 나타나실 때에 여러분에게 가져다주실 은혜에 전적으로 희망을 거십시오.	Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
14	순종하는 자녀로서 여러분은 예전에 몰랐을 때 품었던 욕망에 맞추어 살지 마십시오.	As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15	오히려 여러분을 불러 주신 거룩하신 분을 따라 여러분 자신들도 모든 행실에서 거룩해지십시오.	But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
16	성경에 이렇게 적혀 있기 때문입니다. “너희는 거룩하게 되어야 한다. 내가 거룩하기 때문이다.”	Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
17	겉모습을 보고 사람을 차별하지 않으시고, 저마다 한 일에 따라 심판하시는 분을 여러분이 아버지라고 부르며 기도드립니다. 그러므로 여러분은 이 땅에 몸 붙여 사는 시간 동안 두려운 마음가짐으로 처신하십시오.	And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
18	아시다시피, 여러분은 여러분의 조상에게서 넘겨받은 헛된 행실에서 풀려났습니다. 그런데 그리된 것은 썩어 없어질 것, 곧 은이나 금을 통해 된 것이 아닙니다.	Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19	오히려 귀한 피, 곧 흠도 없고 티도 없는 어린양 같은 그리스도의 피를 통해 된 것입니다.	But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
20	그리스도께서는 세상의 기초가 놓이기 전에 미리 알려져 계셨는데, 여러분 때문에 시간의 마지막 때에 나타나 보이시게 되셨습니다.	Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
21	여러분은 그분을 통해 하나님을 믿는 사람들입니다. 하나님은 죽은 사람들 가운데서 그분을 일으켜 살리시고 그분에게 영광을 주셨습니다. 그래서 여러분의 믿음과 희망은 하나님께 있습니다.	Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
22	여러분은 진리에 순종함으로 여러분의 영혼을 깨끗하게 하였고, 꾸밈없이 형제자매를 사랑하기에 이르렀습니다. 그러므로 깨끗한 마음으로 서로 끊임없이 사랑하십시오.	Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
23	여러분이 다시 태어난 것은 썩는 씨가 아니라 썩지 않는 씨로부터 된 일입니다. 곧 살아 있고 계속 남아 있는 하나님의 말씀을 통해서 된 일입니다.	Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
24	따라서 “모든 생명체는 풀과 같고 생명체의 온갖 영광은 풀의 꽃과 같다. 풀은 마르고 꽃은 떨어진다.	For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
25	그러나 주님의 말씀은 영원히 남아 있다.” 이것이 여러분한테 좋은 소식으로 전해진 그 말씀입니다.	But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
