1	네부카드네자르 왕궁의 네 젊은이 여호야김이 유다 임금으로 다스린 지 3년째 되는 해에 바빌론 임금 네부카드네자르가 예루살렘으로 와서 그 도시를 에워쌌다.	In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2	주님이 그의 손에 유다 임금 여호야김과 하나님의 집의 기구 몇 가지를 넘겨주셨다. 그래서 그는 그것들을 시날 땅 자신의 신들의 집으로 가져갔다. 그 기구들을 자신의 신들의 보물 창고에 들여놓았다.	And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3	임금은 아스브나스 곧 궁정 관리들의 대장에게 명령했다. 그래서 이스라엘 사람들 가운데서 몇 사람을, 곧 임금 집안의 후손과 귀족 가운데서 몇 사람을 데려오게 했다.	And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
4	흠 하나 없고 잘생긴 젊은이들이었다. 그들은 온갖 지혜를 갖추고 알아야 할 것을 알고 이해력이 좋았다. 임금의 궁전에서 일할 능력이 있었다. 그들을 데려와서 칼데아 사람들의 문헌과 언어를 배우게 했다.	Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5	임금은 그들을 위해 자신이 먹는 음식과 자신이 마시는 포도주에서 그날그날 필요한 만큼 정해 주었다. 그들을 3년 동안 양육받게 했다. 이 기간이 지나면 임금 앞에 서서 섬기도록 했다.	And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6	그들 가운데 유다 사람들이 몇 사람 있었다. 다니엘, 하나냐, 미사엘, 아사랴였다.	Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
7	그들에게 궁정 관리들의 대장이 새 이름을 붙여 주었다. 다니엘에게는 벨드사살이라는 이름을, 하나냐에게는 사드락이라는 이름을, 미사엘에게는 메삭이라는 이름을, 아사랴에게는 아벳느고라는 이름을 붙여 주었다.	Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed–nego.
8	다니엘은 마음을 굳게 먹었다. 임금이 먹는 음식과 임금이 마시는 포도주로 자신을 더럽히지 않기로 한 것이다. 그는 궁정 관리들의 대장에게 자신을 더럽히지 않게 해 달라고 부탁했다.	But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9	하나님은 궁정 관리들의 대장이 다니엘에게 한결같은 사랑과 자비를 베풀게 해 주셨다.	Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
10	궁정 관리들의 대장이 다니엘에게 말했다. “나는 나의 주인이신 임금님이 무섭다. 임금님이 너희의 먹을거리와 마실 거리를 정해 주셨다. 무슨 까닭으로 그분이 보시게 하려 하느냐, 너희 얼굴이 너희 또래 젊은이들보다 야윈 것을? 임금님 앞에서 내 목을 위태롭게 만들려는 것이냐?”	And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
11	그러자 다니엘은 감독관에게 말했다. 그는 궁정 관리들의 대장이 다니엘, 하나냐, 미사엘, 아사랴를 맡아 돌보도록 정해 준 사람이었다.	Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12	“부디 감독관님의 종인 우리를 10일 동안 시험해 보십시오. 우리에게 채소를 주어 먹게 하고 물만 마시게 허락해 주십시오.	Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13	그래서 감독관님 앞에 우리의 모습과 임금님의 음식을 먹는 젊은이들의 모습이 드러나 보이도록 해 주십시오. 그러고는 감독관님이 보신 것에 따라 감독관님의 종인 우리를 다루십시오.”	Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
14	감독관은 이 일과 관련하여 그들의 말을 들어 주었다. 그래서 그들을 10일 동안 시험해 보았다.	So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15	10일이 지났다. 그들의 모습은 임금의 음식을 먹는 모든 젊은이들보다 보기에 더 좋고 살도 더 올라 보였다.	And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.
16	그리하여 감독관은 그들에게 정해진 음식과 그들이 마셔야 할 포도주를 거두어 가고, 그들에게 채소를 주었다.	Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
17	이 네 젊은이, 바로 그들에게 하나님이 온갖 문헌과 지혜에 대한 이해력과 통찰력을 주셨다. 특히 다니엘은 모든 환상과 꿈을 분별했다.	As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18	임금이 그들을 데려올 것을 말해 두었던 기한이 되자, 궁정 관리들의 대장이 그들을 네부카드네자르 앞으로 데리고 갔다.	Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19	임금이 그들과 말해 보았는데, 그들 누구한테서도 다니엘, 하나냐, 미사엘, 아사랴보다 나은 사람을 찾아볼 수 없었다. 그래서 그들이 임금 앞에 서서 섬기게 되었다.	And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
20	깨달음이 필요한 지혜와 관련된 일마다 임금은 그들에게 물어보았다. 그러고 나서는 자신의 온 왕국에 있는 모든 마술사나 주술사보다도 그들이 열 배나 뛰어난 것을 알게 되었다.	And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
21	다니엘은 키루스 임금 첫째 해까지 거기 있었다.	And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
