1	바울이 자신에 대한 공격을 막아 내다 나 바울이 직접 그리스도의 온유함과 너그러움을 힘입어 여러분에게 권유합니다. 내가 여러분 가운데서 얼굴을 마주하고 있을 때는 몸을 낮추지만, 떠나 있을 때는 여러분을 강경하게 대한다고들 합니다.	Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:
2	그런데 내가 부탁드립니다. 여러분 곁에 있게 될 때에 내가 단호한 태도로 강경하게 여러분을 대하는 일이 없도록 해 주십시오. 우리가 세상 기준에 따라 살아간다고 생각하는 몇몇 사람들한테는 내가 단호한 태도로 세게 대할 생각입니다.	But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
3	우리가 세상에서 살아가지만 세상 기준에 따라 싸우지는 않습니다.	For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4	우리가 치르는 싸움의 무기는 세상의 것이 아니라, 하나님으로부터 오는 강력한 것입니다. 튼튼한 성채도 허물어뜨릴 수 있을 만큼 강력한 것이지요. 우리는 교묘한 주장들을 허물어뜨립니다.	(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5	하나님을 알아 가는 것에 맞서 스스로 높아진 모든 도도함도 짓뭉개 버립니다. 그리고 모든 생각을 사로잡아 그리스도께 순종하게 합니다.	Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
6	우리는 모든 불순종을 벌할 준비가 되어 있습니다. 언제든 여러분의 순종이 완전하게 되기만 하면요.	And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
7	여러분은 사람의 겉모습만 보고 있습니다. 누구든 자신이 그리스도께 속해 있다고 굳게 믿고 있다면, 이것을 스스로 다시 생각해 보시기 바랍니다. 그 자신이 그리스도께 속한 것처럼 우리도 그러하다는 것을 말입니다.	Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s.
8	주님이 주신 우리의 권한에 대해 내가 좀 지나치게 자랑했다고 해도, 나는 창피를 당하지 않을 것입니다. 그 권한은 여러분을 세워 주라고 주신 것이지 허물어뜨리라고 주신 것이 아니기 때문입니다.	For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:
9	내가 나의 편지들을 통해서 여러분을 겁주려고 하는 것처럼 보이고 싶지는 않습니다.	That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.
10	그런데도 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 까닭은 이렇게 말하는 사람이 있기 때문입니다. “그의 편지들은 무게가 있고 힘이 있지만, 실제로 대면하면 그는 약하고 그의 말재주는 형편없습니다.”	For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.
11	이런 사람은 이것을 잘 알아 두시기 바랍니다. 우리가 떠나 있을 때 편지를 통해서 무슨 말을 썼으면, 곁에 있을 때 행동도 꼭 그렇게 한다는 것을 말입니다.	Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.
12	자랑의 한계 우리는 우리 자신들을, 스스로를 내세우는 어떤 사람들과 같은 부류에 두거나 그들과 비교할 생각이 털끝만큼도 없습니다. 그러나 그들은 자기들을 기준으로 자기들을 재어 보고 자기네끼리 서로 비교하고 있으니 깨닫지를 못합니다.	For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
13	반대로 우리는, 한계를 벗어나 자랑하지 않을 겁니다. 하나님이 우리에게 나누어 맡기신 활동 영역의 한계에 맞추어 할 겁니다. 우리는 그 한계에 따라 여러분에게까지도 다다른 것입니다.	But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
14	우리는 마치 여러분한테 다다른 적도 없었으면서 그러기라도 하는 것처럼, 분수를 넘어서 지나치게 나아가고 있는 것이 아닙니다. 우리가 그리스도의 복음을 가지고 여러분에게까지도 가장 먼저 이르렀으니까요.	For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:
15	우리는 한계를 벗어나서 다른 사람이 애써 해 놓은 일을 가지고 자랑하는 것이 아닙니다. 우리가 가진 희망은 여러분 가운데서 여러분의 믿음이 자라남에 따라 우리의 활동 영역이 더욱 커지는 것입니다.	Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
16	그리하여 여러분 있는 곳을 넘어가는 곳까지 좋은 소식을 전하게 되는 것입니다. 다른 영역에서 남들이 해 놓은 것을 가지고 자랑하려는 것이 아닙니다.	To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s line of things made ready to our hand.
17	“자랑하는 사람은 주님을 자랑하기 바랍니다.”	But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
18	인정을 받는 사람은 스스로를 내세우는 사람이 아니라 주님이 내세워 주시는 사람이니까요.	For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
