|---|---|---|
ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ιωβ λέγει | Then Job answered and said,
ἐπ’ ἀληθείας οἶδα ὅτι οὕτως ἐστίν πῶς γὰρ ἔσται δίκαιος βροτὸς παρὰ κυρίῳ | I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
ἐὰν γὰρ βούληται κριθῆναι αὐτῷ οὐ μὴ ὑπακούσῃ αὐτῷ ἵνα μὴ ἀντείπῃ πρὸς ἕνα λόγον αὐτοῦ ἐκ χιλίων | If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
σοφὸς γάρ ἐστιν διανοίᾳ κραταιός τε καὶ μέγας τίς σκληρὸς γενόμενος ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ὑπέμεινεν | He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?
ὁ παλαιῶν ὄρη καὶ οὐκ οἴδασιν ὁ καταστρέφων αὐτὰ ὀργῇ | Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.
ὁ σείων τὴν ὑπ’ οὐρανὸν ἐκ θεμελίων οἱ δὲ στῦλοι αὐτῆς σαλεύονται | Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
ὁ λέγων τῷ ἡλίῳ καὶ οὐκ ἀνατέλλει κατὰ δὲ ἄστρων κατασφραγίζει | Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.
ὁ τανύσας τὸν οὐρανὸν μόνος καὶ περιπατῶν ὡς ἐπ’ ἐδάφους ἐπὶ θαλάσσης | Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
ὁ ποιῶν Πλειάδα καὶ ἕσπερον καὶ ἀρκτοῦρον καὶ ταμίεια νότου | Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.
ὁ ποιῶν μεγάλα καὶ ἀνεξιχνίαστα ἔνδοξά τε καὶ ἐξαίσια ὧν οὐκ ἔστιν ἀριθμός | Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.
ἐὰν ὑπερβῇ με οὐ μὴ ἴδω καὶ ἐὰν παρέλθῃ με οὐδ’ ὧς ἔγνων | Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.
ἐὰν ἀπαλλάξῃ τίς ἀποστρέψει ἢ τίς ἐρεῖ αὐτῷ τί ἐποίησας | Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?
αὐτὸς γὰρ ἀπέστραπται ὀργήν ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ ἐκάμφθησαν κήτη τὰ ὑπ’ οὐρανόν | If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.
ἐὰν δέ μου ὑπακούσηται ἦ διακρινεῖ τὰ ῥήματά μου | How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
ἐάν τε γὰρ ὦ δίκαιος οὐκ εἰσακούσεταί μου τοῦ κρίματος αὐτοῦ δεηθήσομαι | Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.
ἐάν τε καλέσω καὶ ὑπακούσῃ οὐ πιστεύω ὅτι εἰσακήκοέν μου | If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.
μὴ γνόφῳ με ἐκτρίψῃ πολλὰ δέ μου τὰ συντρίμματα πεποίηκεν διὰ κενῆς | For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.
οὐκ ἐᾷ γάρ με ἀναπνεῦσαι ἐνέπλησεν δέ με πικρίας | He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.
ὅτι μὲν γὰρ ἰσχύι κρατεῖ τίς οὖν κρίματι αὐτοῦ ἀντιστήσεται | If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?
ἐὰν γὰρ ὦ δίκαιος τὸ στόμα μου ἀσεβήσει ἐάν τε ὦ ἄμεμπτος σκολιὸς ἀποβήσομαι | If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.
εἴτε γὰρ ἠσέβησα οὐκ οἶδα τῇ ψυχῇ πλὴν ὅτι ἀφαιρεῖταί μου ἡ ζωή | Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.
διὸ εἶπον μέγαν καὶ δυνάστην ἀπολλύει ὀργή | This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.
ὅτι φαῦλοι ἐν θανάτῳ ἐξαισίῳ ἀλλὰ δίκαιοι καταγελῶνται | If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.
παραδέδονται γὰρ εἰς χεῖρας ἀσεβοῦς πρόσωπα κριτῶν αὐτῆς συγκαλύπτει εἰ δὲ μὴ αὐτός τίς ἐστιν | The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?
ὁ δὲ βίος μού ἐστιν ἐλαφρότερος δρομέως ἀπέδρασαν καὶ οὐκ εἴδοσαν | Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.
ἦ καὶ ἔστιν ναυσὶν ἴχνος ὁδοῦ ἢ ἀετοῦ πετομένου ζητοῦντος βοράν | They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.
ἐάν τε γὰρ εἴπω ἐπιλήσομαι λαλῶν συγκύψας τῷ προσώπῳ στενάξω | If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:
σείομαι πᾶσιν τοῖς μέλεσιν οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι οὐκ ἀθῷόν με ἐάσεις | I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.
ἐπειδὴ δέ εἰμι ἀσεβής διὰ τί οὐκ ἀπέθανον | If I be wicked, why then labour I in vain?
ἐὰν γὰρ ἀπολούσωμαι χιόνι καὶ ἀποκαθάρωμαι χερσὶν καθαραῖς | If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;
ἱκανῶς ἐν ῥύπῳ με ἔβαψας ἐβδελύξατο δέ με ἡ στολή | Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.
οὐ γὰρ εἶ ἄνθρωπος κατ’ ἐμέ ᾧ ἀντικρινοῦμαι ἵνα ἔλθωμεν ὁμοθυμαδὸν εἰς κρίσιν | For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.
εἴθε ἦν ὁ μεσίτης ἡμῶν καὶ ἐλέγχων καὶ διακούων ἀνὰ μέσον ἀμφοτέρων | Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.
ἀπαλλαξάτω ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ τὴν ῥάβδον ὁ δὲ φόβος αὐτοῦ μή με στροβείτω | Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
καὶ οὐ μὴ φοβηθῶ ἀλλὰ λαλήσω οὐ γὰρ οὕτω συνεπίσταμαι | Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.
