ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ιωβ λέγει | But Job answered and said,
ἀκούσατε ἀκούσατέ μου τῶν λόγων ἵνα μὴ ᾖ μοι παρ’ ὑμῶν αὕτη ἡ παράκλησις | Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.
ἄρατέ με ἐγὼ δὲ λαλήσω εἶτ’ οὐ καταγελάσετέ μου | Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.
τί γάρ μὴ ἀνθρώπου μου ἡ ἔλεγξις ἢ διὰ τί οὐ θυμωθήσομαι | As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?
εἰσβλέψαντες εἰς ἐμὲ θαυμάσατε χεῖρα θέντες ἐπὶ σιαγόνι | Mark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.
ἐάν τε γὰρ μνησθῶ ἐσπούδακα ἔχουσιν δέ μου τὰς σάρκας ὀδύναι | Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.
διὰ τί ἀσεβεῖς ζῶσιν πεπαλαίωνται δὲ καὶ ἐν πλούτῳ | Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?
ὁ σπόρος αὐτῶν κατὰ ψυχήν τὰ δὲ τέκνα αὐτῶν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς | Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.
οἱ οἶκοι αὐτῶν εὐθηνοῦσιν φόβος δὲ οὐδαμοῦ μάστιξ δὲ παρὰ κυρίου οὐκ ἔστιν ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς | Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.
ἡ βοῦς αὐτῶν οὐκ ὠμοτόκησεν διεσώθη δὲ αὐτῶν ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχουσα καὶ οὐκ ἔσφαλεν | Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.
μένουσιν δὲ ὡς πρόβατα αἰώνια τὰ δὲ παιδία αὐτῶν προσπαίζουσιν | They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.
ἀναλαβόντες ψαλτήριον καὶ κιθάραν καὶ εὐφραίνονται φωνῇ ψαλμοῦ | They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.
συνετέλεσαν δὲ ἐν ἀγαθοῖς τὸν βίον αὐτῶν ἐν δὲ ἀναπαύσει ᾅδου ἐκοιμήθησαν | They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.
λέγει δὲ κυρίῳ ἀπόστα ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ὁδούς σου εἰδέναι οὐ βούλομαι | Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.
τί ἱκανός ὅτι δουλεύσομεν αὐτῷ καὶ τίς ὠφέλεια ὅτι ἀπαντήσομεν αὐτῷ | What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?
ἐν χερσὶν γὰρ ἦν αὐτῶν τὰ ἀγαθά ἔργα δὲ ἀσεβῶν οὐκ ἐφορᾷ | Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀσεβῶν λύχνος σβεσθήσεται ἐπελεύσεται δὲ αὐτοῖς ἡ καταστροφή ὠδῖνες δὲ αὐτοὺς ἕξουσιν ἀπὸ ὀργῆς | How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.
ἔσονται δὲ ὥσπερ ἄχυρα πρὸ ἀνέμου ἢ ὥσπερ κονιορτός ὃν ὑφείλατο λαῖλαψ | They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.
ἐκλίποι υἱοὺς τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ ἀνταποδώσει πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ γνώσεται | God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.
ἴδοισαν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ σφαγήν ἀπὸ δὲ κυρίου μὴ διασωθείη | His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
ὅτι τί θέλημα αὐτοῦ ἐν οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτόν καὶ ἀριθμοὶ μηνῶν αὐτοῦ διῃρέθησαν | For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?
πότερον οὐχὶ ὁ κύριός ἐστιν ὁ διδάσκων σύνεσιν καὶ ἐπιστήμην αὐτὸς δὲ φόνους διακρινεῖ | Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.
οὗτος ἀποθανεῖται ἐν κράτει ἁπλοσύνης αὐτοῦ ὅλος δὲ εὐπαθῶν καὶ εὐθηνῶν | One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.
τὰ δὲ ἔγκατα αὐτοῦ πλήρη στέατος μυελὸς δὲ αὐτοῦ διαχεῖται | His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.
ὁ δὲ τελευτᾷ ὑπὸ πικρίας ψυχῆς οὐ φαγὼν οὐδὲν ἀγαθόν | And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.
ὁμοθυμαδὸν δὲ ἐπὶ γῆς κοιμῶνται σαπρία δὲ αὐτοὺς ἐκάλυψεν | They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.
ὥστε οἶδα ὑμᾶς ὅτι τόλμῃ ἐπίκεισθέ μοι | Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.
ὅτι ἐρεῖτε ποῦ ἐστιν οἶκος ἄρχοντος καὶ ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ σκέπη τῶν σκηνωμάτων τῶν ἀσεβῶν | For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?
ἐρωτήσατε παραπορευομένους ὁδόν καὶ τὰ σημεῖα αὐτῶν οὐκ ἀπαλλοτριώσετε | Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens,
ὅτι εἰς ἡμέραν ἀπωλείας κουφίζεται ὁ πονηρός εἰς ἡμέραν ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ ἀπαχθήσονται | That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.
τίς ἀπαγγελεῖ ἐπὶ προσώπου αὐτοῦ τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐποίησεν τίς ἀνταποδώσει αὐτῷ | Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?
καὶ αὐτὸς εἰς τάφους ἀπηνέχθη καὶ ἐπὶ σορῷ ἠγρύπνησεν | Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.
ἐγλυκάνθησαν αὐτῷ χάλικες χειμάρρου καὶ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ἀπελεύσεται καὶ ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ ἀναρίθμητοι | The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.
πῶς δὲ παρακαλεῖτέ με κενά τὸ δὲ ἐμὲ καταπαύσασθαι ἀφ’ ὑμῶν οὐδέν | How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?
