| 1 | Vede quão grande amor o Pai tem nos dado, que fôssemos chamados filhos de Deus. E nós somos. Por isso o mundo não nos conhece, pois não conhece a ele. | Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. |
| 2 | Amados, agora somos filhos de Deus, e ainda não está manifesto o que seremos. Porém sabemos que, quando ele se manifestar, seremos semelhantes a ele, pois o veremos como ele é. | Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. |
| 3 | E todo aquele que tem nele essa esperança purifica a si mesmo, como também ele é puro. | And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. |
| 4 | Todo aquele que pratica o pecado também pratica injustiça, pois o pecado é injustiça. | Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. |
| 5 | E sabeis que ele apareceu para tirar os pecados; e nele não há pecado. | And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. |
| 6 | Todo aquele que nele permanece não pratica o pecado; todo aquele que costuma pecar não o viu nem o conheceu. | Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. |
| 7 | Filhinhos, ninguém vos engane. Quem pratica a justiça é justo, assim como ele é justo. | Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. |
| 8 | Quem pratica o pecado é do diabo, pois o diabo peca desde o princípio. Para isto o Filho de Deus se manifestou, para desfazer as obras do diabo. | He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. |
| 9 | Todo aquele que é nascido de Deus não pratica o pecado, pois a sua semente reside nele; e não pode praticar o pecado, porque é nascido de Deus. | Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. |
| 10 | Nisto são reconhecíveis os filhos de Deus, e os filhos do diabo: todo aquele que não pratica a justiça, e não ama o seu irmão, não é de Deus. | In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. |
| 11 | Pois esta é a mensagem que ouvistes desde o princípio: que nos amemos uns aos outros. | For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. |
| 12 | Não sejamos como Caim, que era do maligno, e matou o seu irmão. E por que o matou? Porque as suas obras eram más, e as do seu irmão justas. | Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous. |
| 13 | Irmãos, não vos surpreendeis se o mundo vos odeia. | Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. |
| 14 | Nós sabemos que já passamos da morte para a vida, pois amamos os irmãos. Quem não ama permanece na morte. | We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. |
| 15 | Todo aquele que odeia o seu irmão é homicida. E sabeis que nenhum homicida tem a vida eterna habitando nele. | Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. |
| 16 | Nisto conhecemos o amor: ele deu a sua vida por nós. E nós devemos dar as nossas vidas pelos irmãos. | Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. |
| 17 | Se alguém tiver bens do mundo, e vir o seu irmão em necessidade, e não se compadecer dele, como pode o amor de Deus estar nele? | But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? |
| 18 | Filhinhos, amemos não de palavra, nem de língua, mas sim com ação e verdade. | My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. |
| 19 | E nisto saberemos que somos da verdade, e teremos segurança no nosso coração diante dele. | And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. |
| 20 | Pois, se o nosso coração nos condena, maior é Deus que o nosso coração, e conhece tudo. | For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. |
| 21 | Amados, se nosso coração não condena, temos confiança diante de Deus. | Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. |
| 22 | E qualquer coisa que pedirmos, dele receberemos; porque guardamos os seus mandamentos, e fazemos o que lhe agrada. | And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. |
| 23 | E este é o seu mandamento: que creiamos no nome do seu Filho Jesus Cristo, e nos amemos uns aos outros, como ele nos mandou. | And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. |
| 24 | E a pessoa que guarda os seus mandamentos está nele, e ele nela. E nisto sabemos que ele está em nós: pelo Espírito que ele nos deu. | And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. |
