1 모세의 장인이요, 미디안의 제사장인 이드로가 하나님께서 모세와 자신의 백성 이스라엘을 위하여 행하신 모든 일 곧 주께서 이스라엘을 이집트에서 데리고 나오신 일에 관하여 들으니라. When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt;
2 그때에 모세의 장인 이드로가 모세가 전에 돌려보낸 그의 아내 십보라와 Then Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back,
3 그녀의 두 아들을 데리고 왔는데 그중 하나의 이름은 게르솜이더라. 이는 모세가 이르기를, 내가 낯선 땅에서 외국인이 되었도다, 하였기 때문이더라. And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:
4 다른 하나의 이름은 엘리에셀이니 이는 그가 이르기를, 내 아버지의 하나님께서 나의 도움이 되사 파라오의 칼에서 나를 건지셨도다, 하였기 때문이더라. And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:
5 모세의 장인 이드로가 그의 아들들과 그의 아내와 함께 광야에 있던 모세에게 이르렀는데 거기는 그가 하나님의 산에서 진을 친 곳이더라. And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:
6 그가 모세에게 이르되, 그대의 장인 나 이드로가 그대의 아내와 또 그녀와 함께한 두 아들을 데리고 그대에게 왔노라, 하니라. And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.
7 ¶모세가 나가서 자기 장인을 맞아 경의를 표하고 그에게 입 맞춘 뒤에 그들이 서로 잘 지내는지 묻고 장막에 들어가니라. And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.
8 모세가 주께서 이스라엘을 위하여 파라오와 이집트 사람들에게 행하신 모든 일과 길에서 자기들에게 임한 모든 고난과 또 주께서 자기들을 건져 내신 일을 자기 장인에게 고하매 And Moses told his father in law all that the Lord had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the Lord delivered them.
9 이드로가 주께서 이스라엘을 이집트 사람들의 손에서 건져 내시려고 베푼 모든 선하심으로 인하여 기뻐하며 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the Lord had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.
10 이르되, 주를 찬송하리로다. 그분께서 너희를 이집트 사람들의 손에서와 파라오의 손에서 건져 내시고 백성을 이집트 사람들의 손 밑에서 건져 내셨도다. And Jethro said, Blessed be the Lord, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.
11 이제 내가 주께서 모든 신들보다 위대하심을 아노니 그분께서는 그들이 교만하게 행한 일에서 그들 위에 계셨도다, 하고 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.
12 모세의 장인 이드로가 하나님을 위하여 번제 헌물과 희생물을 취하매 아론과 이스라엘의 모든 장로가 와서 모세의 장인과 함께 하나님 앞에서 빵을 먹으니라. And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father in law before God.
13 ¶다음 날 모세는 백성을 재판하기 위해 앉았고 백성은 아침부터 저녁까지 모세의 곁에 섰으므로 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.
14 모세의 장인이 그가 백성에게 행한 모든 일을 보고 이르되, 그대가 이 백성에게 행하는 이 일이 도대체 무엇이냐? 어찌하여 그대는 홀로 앉아 있고 온 백성은 아침부터 저녁까지 그대 곁에 서 있느냐? 하니 And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?
15 모세가 자기 장인에게 대답하되, 백성이 내게로 와서 하나님께 여쭈려 하기 때문이니이다. And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:
16 그들이 일이 있으면 내게로 오고 내가 이편과 저편 사이에서 재판하여 그들이 하나님의 법규와 그분의 법들을 알게 하나이다, 하매 When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.
17 모세의 장인이 그에게 이르되, 그대가 행하는 일이 좋지 아니하도다. And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.
18 그대와 또 그대와 함께한 이 백성이 다 분명히 지치리니 이 일이 그대에게 너무 무거우니라. 그대가 이 일을 홀로 행할 수 없도다. Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.
19 이제 내 음성에 귀를 기울이라. 내가 그대에게 조언을 주리니 하나님께서 그대와 함께 계실지로다. 그대는 백성을 위하여 하나님 쪽을 향하고 사정들을 하나님께로 가져가 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:
20 그들에게 규례와 법들을 가르쳐서 그들이 마땅히 걸어야 할 길과 마땅히 행해야 할 일을 그들에게 보여 주며 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
21 또 그대는 온 백성 중에서 능력 있는 사람들 곧 하나님을 두려워하고 진실하며 탐욕을 미워하는 자들을 예비하고 그런 자들을 그들 위에 세워 천 명의 치리자와 백 명의 치리자와 쉰 명의 치리자와 열 명의 치리자로 삼아 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
22 그들이 모든 때에 백성을 재판하게 하라. 큰 문제는 다 그들이 그대에게 가져오려니와 작은 문제는 다 그들이 재판하리니 그리하면 그들이 그대와 함께 짐을 질 터인즉 일이 그대에게 쉬우리라. And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
23 그대가 만일 이 일을 행하고 하나님께서도 그대에게 그리하라고 명령하시면 그대가 이 일을 감당하고 이 온 백성도 자기 처소로 평안히 가리라, 하니라. If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
24 이에 모세가 자기 장인의 음성에 귀를 기울이고 그가 말한 모든 것을 행하여 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.
25 온 이스라엘 중에서 능력 있는 사람들을 택하고 그들을 백성의 우두머리 곧 천 명의 치리자와 백 명의 치리자와 쉰 명의 치리자와 열 명의 치리자로 삼으매 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
26 그들이 모든 때에 백성을 재판하되 어려운 사건들은 모세에게 가져오고 작은 문제는 다 스스로 재판하더라. And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.
27 ¶모세가 자기 장인을 떠나가게 하니 그가 자기 길로 자기 땅으로 돌아가니라. And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
