1 그때에 욥이 응답하여 이르되, Then Job answered and said,
2 오늘도 내가 원망하는 일이 고통스러우니 내가 매 맞는 것이 신음하는 것보다 힘겹도다. Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.
3 오 어디에서 그분을 만날지 내가 알 수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까! 내가 그분의 자리에라도 간다면 좋으리라! Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!
4 내가 그분 앞에서 내 사정을 정리하며 논증할 말을 내 입에 채우고 I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.
5 그분께서 내게 대답해 주시고자 하는 말씀들을 내가 알며 그분께서 내게 말씀하시고자 하는 바를 깨닫기 원하노라. I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.
6 그분께서 자신의 큰 권능으로 나를 반박하시겠느냐? 아니라. 도리어 그분께서 내게 힘을 넣어 주시리라. Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.
7 거기서는 의로운 자가 그분과 논쟁할 수 있은즉 내가 내 심판자로부터 영원토록 구출되리로다. There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.
8 보라, 내가 앞으로 나아가도 그분께서 거기에 계시지 아니하고 뒤로 나아가도 내가 그분을 감지하지 못하며 Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:
9 그분께서 왼쪽에서 일하시나 내가 그분을 바라볼 수 없고 그분께서 오른쪽에 숨으시므로 내가 그분을 볼 수 없도다. On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:
10 그러나 내가 가는 길을 그분께서 아시나니 그분께서 나를 단련하신 뒤에는 내가 금같이 나오리라. But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
11 내 발이 그분의 발걸음을 붙들고 내가 그분의 길을 지켜 치우치지 아니하였으며 My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.
12 내가 그분의 입술의 명령에서 돌이키지 아니하고 내게 필요한 음식보다 그분의 입의 말씀들을 더 귀히 여겼도다. Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
13 오직 그분은 생각이 한결 같으시니 누가 그분을 돌이킬 수 있으리요? 그분께서는 자신의 혼이 원하는 것 바로 그것을 행하시나니 But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.
14 그분께서는 나를 위하여 정하신 일을 이루시느니라. 그분께는 그러한 일이 많이 있느니라. For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.
15 그러므로 내가 그분 앞에서 괴로워하며 깊이 생각할 때에 그분을 무서워하는도다. Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.
16 하나님께서 내 마음을 약하게 하시며 전능자께서 나를 괴롭게 하시나니 For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me:
17 이는 내가 어둠 앞에서 끊어지지 아니하였고 그분께서 어둠을 덮으사 내 얼굴에서 떠나게 하지 아니하셨기 때문이로다. Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.
