1 그때에 데만 사람 엘리바스가 응답하여 이르되, Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2 지혜로운 자가 헛된 지식을 말하며 동풍으로 자기 배를 채우겠느냐? Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
3 그가 무익한 이야기로 변론하겠느냐? 혹은 아무 효력 없는 말로 변론하겠느냐? Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
4 참으로 네가 두려워하는 것을 내버리고 하나님 앞에 기도하는 것을 그만두나니 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
5 네 입이 네 불법을 말하며 네가 간교한 자의 혀를 택하는도다. For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
6 너를 정죄하는 것은 내가 아니요, 네 입이라. 참으로 네 입술이 너를 대적하여 증언하느니라. Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
7 네가 맨 처음에 태어난 사람이냐? 작은 산들이 있기 전에 네가 만들어졌느냐? Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
8 네가 하나님의 은밀한 일을 들었느냐? 그래서 네게만 지혜가 있게 하려느냐? Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
9 너는 아는데 우리는 알지 못하는 것이 무엇이냐? 너는 깨닫는데 우리에게는 없는 것이 무엇이냐? What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
10 우리에게는 머리가 흰 사람도 있고 심히 연로한 사람도 있으며 네 아버지보다 훨씬 더 늙은 사람도 있느니라. With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
11 하나님의 위로가 네게는 작으냐? 네게 무슨 은밀한 것이 있느냐? Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
12 어찌하여 네 마음이 너를 끌고 다니느냐? 네 눈이 무엇에다 눈짓을 하기에 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
13 네가 네 영을 돌이켜 하나님을 대적하고 네 입에서 그런 말들이 나오게 하느냐? That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
14 사람이 무엇이기에 깨끗하겠느냐? 여자에게서 태어난 자가 무엇이기에 의롭겠느냐? What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 보라, 그분께서는 자신의 성도들을 신뢰하지 아니하시나니 참으로 하늘들이라도 그분의 눈앞에서 깨끗하지 아니하거든 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
16 하물며 불법을 물 마시듯 하는 사람이야 얼마나 더 가증하고 더럽겠느냐? How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
17 내가 네게 보여 주리니 내 말을 들으라. 내가 본 것을 밝히 보이리니 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
18 지혜로운 자들이 자기 조상들에게서 그것을 받아 고하였고 그것을 숨기지 아니하였느니라. Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
19 땅은 그들에게만 주어졌으며 어떤 낯선 자도 그들 가운데로 지나가지 아니하였느니라. Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 사악한 자는 그의 평생 동안 아픔으로 고통을 당하고 그분께서 학대하는 자에게 그의 햇수를 숨기셨으므로 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
21 그의 귀에 무서운 소리가 있도다. 그가 형통할 때에 파멸시키는 자가 그에게 닥치리니 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
22 그는 자기가 어둠 속에서 돌아올 것을 믿지 아니하고 칼이 그를 기다리느니라. He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
23 그는 널리 헤매면서 빵을 구하여 이르기를, 그것이 어디 있느냐? 하며 어둠의 날이 자기에게 가까이 온 줄을 아느니라. He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 고난과 고통이 그를 두렵게 하며 싸움을 준비한 왕처럼 그를 쳐서 이기리니 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25 이는 그가 자기 손을 내밀어 하나님을 대적하며 자신을 강하게 하여 전능자를 대적하기 때문이라. For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
26 그가 그분께 달려들되 심지어 그분의 목과 그분의 방패들의 새긴 장식에까지 달려드나니 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
27 이는 그가 자기 기름으로 자기 얼굴을 덮고 자기 옆구리를 기름진 겹 살이 되게 하기 때문이니라. Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
28 그는 황폐한 도시들과 사람이 거주하지 아니하는 집 곧 돌무더기가 될 집들에 거하느니라. And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
29 그는 부자가 되지 못하며 그의 재산은 지속되지 못하고 또 그가 자기 재산을 땅 위에서 완전히 늘리지 못하리라. He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
30 그가 어둠 속을 벗어나 떠나지 못하리니 불꽃이 그의 가지들을 말릴 것이요, 그분의 입의 숨으로 말미암아 그가 떠나가리라. He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31 속임을 당하는 자는 헛된 것을 신뢰하지 말지니 헛된 것이 그의 보응이 되리라. Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
32 그의 때가 이르기도 전에 그 일이 이루어질 터인즉 그의 가지가 푸르지 못하리니 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
33 그는 포도나무처럼 자기의 설익은 포도를 흔들어 떨어뜨릴 것이요, 올리브나무처럼 자기의 꽃을 떨어뜨리리라. He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
34 위선자들의 회중은 황폐하게 되며 뇌물을 받는 자의 장막들은 불로 소멸되리니 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
35 그들은 해악을 수태하고 헛된 것을 낳으며 그들의 배는 속임수를 예비하느니라, 하니라. They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
