1 이처럼 아비야가 자기 조상들과 함께 잠드니 그들이 그를 다윗의 도시에 묻으니라. 그의 아들 아사가 그를 대신하여 통치하니 그의 시대에 그 땅이 십 년 동안 평온하였더라. So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.
2 아사가 주 자기 하나님의 눈에 선한 것과 올바른 것을 행하였으니 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God:
3 그가 이방 신들의 제단들과 산당들을 제거하고 형상들을 부수며 작은 숲들을 베어 내고 For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:
4 유다에게 명령하여 주 그들의 조상들의 하나님을 구하게 하며 율법과 명령을 행하게 하고 And commanded Judah to seek the Lord God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.
5 또 유다의 모든 도시에서 산당들과 형상들을 제거하였더라. 왕국이 그 앞에서 평온하였더라. Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.
6 ¶그가 유다에 성벽을 두른 도시들을 건축하였으니 이는 주께서 그에게 안식을 주셨으므로 그 땅에 안식이 있었고 또 그 해들에 그에게 전쟁이 없었기 때문이더라. And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the Lord had given him rest.
7 그러므로 그가 유다에게 이르되, 이 땅이 아직 우리 앞에 있을 때에 우리가 이 도시들을 건축하고 그것들 주위에 성벽과 망대와 문과 빗장을 만들자. 우리가 주 우리 하나님을 구하고 우리가 그분을 구하였으므로 그분께서 우리에게 사방에 안식을 주셨느니라, 하였으며 이에 그들이 건축하고 형통하였더라. Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the Lord our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.
8 아사에게 유다에서 나와 큰 방패와 창을 잡는 자 삼십만 명과 베냐민에서 나와 작은 방패를 잡으며 활을 당기는 자 이십팔만 명으로 구성된 군대가 있었는데 이들은 다 강한 용사들이더라. And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.
9 ¶에티오피아 사람 세라가 그들을 치려고 백만 명의 군대와 병거 삼백 대를 거느리고 나아와 마레사에 이르매 And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah.
10 그때에 아사가 그를 치려고 나가니라. 그들이 마레사의 스바다 골짜기에서 전투대형을 갖추고 Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.
11 아사가 주 자기 하나님께 부르짖어 이르되, 주여, 많은 사람들로 돕든지 능력이 없는 자들로 돕든지 주께는 그것이 아무것도 아니니이다. 오 주 우리 하나님이여, 우리를 도우소서. 우리가 주를 의지하오며 주의 이름으로 이 무리를 치러 가나이다. 오 주여, 주는 우리 하나님이시오니 사람이 주를 이기지 못하게 하옵소서, 하니라. And Asa cried unto the Lord his God, and said, Lord, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O Lord our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O Lord, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.
12 이에 주께서 아사와 유다 앞에서 에티오피아 사람들을 치시매 에티오피아 사람들이 도망하니라. So the Lord smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.
13 아사와 그와 함께한 백성이 그랄에 이르기까지 그들을 추격하매 에티오피아 사람들이 쓰러지고 힘을 회복하지 못하였더라. 그들이 주 앞에서와 또 그분의 군대 앞에서 멸망하였더라. 그들이 노략한 물건을 심히 많이 가져가니라. And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the Lord, and before his host; and they carried away very much spoil.
14 주의 두려움이 그랄 주변의 모든 도시에 임하므로 그들이 그 도시들을 치고 그 모든 도시에서 물건을 노략하니 그 도시들 안에는 노략할 물건이 매우 많았더라. And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the Lord came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them.
15 그들이 또 가축 천막을 친 뒤에 양과 낙타를 많이 사로잡고 예루살렘으로 돌아왔더라. They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
