1 네가 나가서 네 원수들과 싸우려 할 때에 말과 병거와 또 너보다 많은 백성을 볼지라도 그들을 두려워하지 말라. 이집트 땅에서 너를 데리고 올라오신 주 네 하나님께서 너와 함께 계시느니라. When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
2 너희가 싸움터에 가까이 가거든 제사장은 백성에게 다가가서 말하고 And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,
3 그들에게 이르기를, 오 이스라엘아, 들으라. 너희가 이 날 너희 원수들과 싸우려고 다가오나니 낙심하지 말고 두려워하지 말며 떨지 말고 그들로 인하여 놀라지 말라. And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them;
4 주 너희 하나님은 곧 너희와 함께 가시고 너희를 위하여 너희 원수들을 치시며 또 너희를 구원하시는 그분이시니라, 할지니라. For the Lord your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.
5 ¶또 직무 수행자들은 백성에게 말하여 이르기를, 새 집을 건축하고 봉헌하지 못한 자가 있느냐? 그는 가서 자기 집으로 돌아갈지니 그가 싸움에서 죽으면 다른 사람이 그것을 봉헌할까 염려하노라. And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
6 포도원을 만들고 그것의 열매를 아직 먹지 못한 자가 있느냐? 그도 가서 자기 집으로 돌아갈지니 그가 싸움에서 죽으면 다른 사람이 그것의 열매를 먹을까 염려하노라. And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.
7 아내와 정혼하고 그녀를 취하지 못한 자가 있느냐? 그는 가서 자기 집으로 돌아갈지니 그가 싸움에서 죽으면 다른 사람이 그녀를 취할까 염려하노라, 하고 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
8 또 직무 수행자들은 백성에게 더 말하여 이르기를, 두려워하며 낙심하는 자가 있느냐? 그는 가서 자기 집으로 돌아갈지니 그의 형제들의 마음도 그의 마음과 같이 약해질까 염려하노라, 하라. And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart faint as well as his heart.
9 직무 수행자들은 백성에게 말하기를 마친 뒤에 군대의 대장들을 세워 백성을 인도하게 할지니라. And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.
10 ¶네가 어떤 도시로 가까이 가서 그것과 싸우려 할 때에 먼저 그 도시에 화평을 선포할지니라. When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.
11 만일 그 도시가 네게 화평의 회답을 하고 너를 향하여 성문을 열거든 그 안에 있는 모든 백성들이 네게 조공을 바치게 하고 너를 섬기게 할 것이요, And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.
12 만일 그 도시가 너와 화평히 지내려 하지 아니하고 너를 대적하여 싸우려 하거든 너는 그 도시를 에워쌀 것이며 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:
13 주 네 하나님께서 그 도시를 네 손에 넘겨주시거든 그 도시의 모든 남자를 칼날로 치고 And when the Lord thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:
14 오직 여자들과 어린것들과 가축과 그 도시의 모든 것 즉 그 도시에서 노획한 모든 것은 네게로 취할지니 너는 네 원수들에게서 노획한 것 즉 주 네 하나님께서 네게 주신 것을 먹을지니라. But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath given thee.
15 네게서 멀리 떨어진 모든 도시들 곧 이 민족들에게 속하지 않은 도시들에게는 네가 이같이 행하려니와 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.
16 주 네 하나님께서 네게 상속 재산으로 주시는 이 백성들의 도시에서는 숨 쉬는 것을 하나도 살려 두지 말지니라. But of the cities of these people, which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:
17 오직 너는 주 네 하나님께서 네게 명령하신 대로 그들 곧 헷 족속과 아모리 족속과 가나안 족속과 브리스 족속과 히위 족속과 여부스 족속을 진멸할지니 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee:
18 이것은 그들이 자기들의 신들에게 행하던 모든 가증한 것을 따라 행하도록 너희를 가르치지 못하게 함으로써 너희가 주 너희 하나님께 죄를 짓지 아니하게 하려 함이니라. That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the Lord your God.
19 ¶네가 어느 도시를 빼앗으려고 오랫동안 에워싸고 그것과 싸움을 할 때에 도끼를 써서 그곳의 나무들을 멸하지 말지니 이는 네가 그것들을 먹을 것이기 때문이라. (들의 나무가 사람의 생명이니) 너는 그것들을 베어 내어 에워싸는 데 이용하지 말지니라. When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege:
20 오직 네가 알기에 음식이 될 수 없는 나무들은 네가 멸하고 베어 내어 너와 싸우는 그 도시를 향한 보루로 만들어 그 도시를 정복할 때까지 쓸지니라. Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.
