1 이제 이스라엘 사람들이 미스바에서 맹세하여 이르기를, 우리 중에서는 아무도 자기 딸을 베냐민에게 아내로 주지 아니하리라, 하였더라. Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.
2 백성이 하나님의 집에 이르러 거기서 저녁때까지 하나님 앞에 머무르며 소리를 높여 심히 슬프게 울고는 And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore;
3 이르되, 오 주 이스라엘의 하나님이여, 어찌하여 이스라엘 안에서 이 일 곧 오늘 이스라엘 안에서 한 지파가 없어지는 일이 생기게 되었나이까? 하였더라. And said, O Lord God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?
4 다음 날에 백성이 일찍 일어나 거기에 한 제단을 쌓고 번제 헌물과 화평 헌물을 드렸더라. And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
5 이스라엘 자손이 이르되, 이스라엘의 모든 지파 가운데서 누가 회중과 더불어 주께 올라오지 아니하였느냐? 하였으니 이는 그들이 미스바로 올라와 주께 이르지 아니한 자에 관하여 크게 맹세하며 말하기를, 그는 반드시 죽임을 당하리라, 하였기 때문이더라. And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the Lord? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the Lord to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
6 이스라엘 자손이 자기 형제 베냐민으로 인하여 뉘우치며 이르되, 이 날 이스라엘에서 한 지파가 끊어졌도다. And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.
7 우리가 어떻게 그 남은 자들에게 아내를 얻어 주리요? 우리가 전에 주를 두고 맹세하여 우리 딸들을 그들에게 아내로 주지 아니하리라, 하였도다. How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?
8 ¶또 그들이 이르되, 이스라엘 지파들 중에서 어떤 자가 미스바로 올라와 주께 이르지 아니하였느냐? 하고 보니 야베스길르앗에서는 한 사람도 진영에 이르러 집회에 참여하지 아니하였더라. And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the Lord? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh–gilead to the assembly.
9 백성의 수를 세매, 보라, 거기에 야베스길르앗 거주민 중에서 하나도 없었더라. For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh–gilead there.
10 회중이 가장 용감한 사람 만 이천 명을 거기로 보내며 그들에게 명령하여 이르되, 가서 야베스길르앗 거주민들과 부녀와 아이들을 칼날로 치라. And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh–gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
11 너희가 행할 일은 이러하니 곧 너희는 모든 남자와 및 남자와 함께 누운 모든 여자를 진멸할 것이니라, 하였더라. And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.
12 그들이 야베스길르앗 거주민들 가운데서 젊은 처녀 사백 명을 얻었는데 그들은 아직 남자와 눕지 아니하여 남자를 알지 못하는 자들이더라. 그들이 그들을 실로에 있던 진영으로 데려왔더라. 이곳은 가나안 땅에 있느니라. And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh–gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
13 온 회중이 몇 사람을 보내어 림몬 반석에 있던 베냐민 자손에게 말하게 하고 평화로이 그들을 부르게 하매 And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them.
14 그때에 베냐민이 다시 오므로 그들이 야베스길르앗 여자들 중에서 살려 둔 자들을 그들에게 아내로 주었으나 그럼에도 불구하고 그들이 그들에게 부족하므로 And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh–gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.
15 백성이 베냐민으로 인해 뉘우쳤으니 이는 주께서 이스라엘 지파들 가운데 한 지파를 깨뜨리셨기 때문이더라. And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 ¶그때에 회중의 장로들이 이르되, 베냐민에서 여자들이 멸절되었은즉 우리가 남아 있는 그들을 위해 어떻게 아내를 얻어 줄까? 하고는 Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?
17 또 이르되, 베냐민 중에서 도피한 자들에게 반드시 상속 재산이 있어야 하리니 그리하면 이스라엘 중에서 한 지파가 멸절되지 아니하리라. And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.
18 그러나 우리가 우리 딸들을 그들에게 아내로 주지 못하리니 이는 이스라엘 자손이 맹세하여 이르기를, 베냐민에게 아내를 주는 자는 저주를 받으리라, 하였기 때문이로다, 하니라. Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.
19 그때에 그들이 이르되, 보라, 벧엘 북쪽 편, 르보나 남쪽, 벧엘에서 세겜으로 올라가는 큰길의 동쪽 편에 있는 한 장소에서, 실로에서 해마다 주의 명절이 있도다, 하고 Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the Lord in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Beth–el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth–el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
20 그러므로 베냐민 자손에게 명령하여 이르되, 가서 포도원에서 숨어 기다리며 Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;
21 살펴보다가, 보라, 실로의 딸들이 춤추면서 춤추러 나오거든 너희는 포도원에서 나와 각 사람이 실로의 딸들 중에서 자기 아내를 붙들어서 베냐민 땅으로 가라. And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
22 만일 그들의 아버지들이나 형제들이 우리에게 와서 불평하면 우리가 그들에게 말하기를, 우리를 위하여 그들에게 호의를 베풀라. 우리가 전쟁 중에 각 사람을 위하여 그의 아내를 남겨 두지 못하였느니라. 너희가 이번에 그들에게 주지 아니하였은즉 너희에게 죄가 없을 것이니라, 하겠노라, 하매 And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.
23 베냐민 자손이 그와 같이 행하여 춤추는 자들 중에서 자기들의 수대로 붙들어 아내로 삼고는 가서 자기들의 상속 재산으로 돌아가 도시들을 복구하고 그 도시들에 거하니라. And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.
24 그때에 이스라엘 자손이 그곳에서 떠나 각 사람이 자기 지파와 자기 가족에게로 돌아가되 곧 각 사람이 그곳에서 나와 자기의 상속 재산으로 돌아갔더라. And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.
25 그때에는 이스라엘에 왕이 없었으므로 사람마다 자기 눈에 옳은 것을 행하였더라. In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
