1 이 일 뒤에 다윗이 주께 여쭈어 이르되, 내가 유다의 도시들 중의 하나로 올라가리이까? 하매 주께서 그에게 이르시되, 올라가라, 하시니 다윗이 이르되, 내가 어디로 가리이까? 하매 그분께서 이르시되, 헤브론으로 갈지니라, 하시니라. And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the Lord said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
2 이에 다윗이 자기의 두 아내 곧 예스르엘 여인 아히노암과 갈멜 사람 나발의 아내 아비가일도 데리고 거기로 올라갈 때에 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite.
3 자기와 함께한 사람들 곧 각 사람과 그의 집안을 데리고 올라가서 그들을 헤브론의 도시들에 거하게 하니라. And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
4 유다 사람들이 와서 거기서 다윗에게 기름을 부어 유다의 집을 다스릴 왕으로 삼았으며 또 그들이 다윗에게 고하여 이르되, 야베스길르앗 사람들이 사울을 묻었나이다, 하였더라. And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabesh–gilead were they that buried Saul.
5 ¶다윗이 야베스길르앗 사람들에게 사자들을 보내어 그들에게 이르되, 너희가 너희 주 곧 사울에게 이 같은 친절을 베풀어 그를 묻었으니 주께 복을 받을지어다. And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh–gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the Lord, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.
6 너희가 이 일을 행하였은즉 이제 주께서 너희에게 친절과 진리를 베푸시기 원하며 나도 이 친절을 너희에게 갚으리니 And now the Lord shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.
7 그러므로 이제 너희는 손을 강하게 하고 용맹스럽게 할지어다. 너희 주인 사울이 죽었고 또 유다의 집이 내게 기름을 부어 자기들을 다스릴 왕으로 삼았느니라, 하니라. Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.
8 ¶그러나 사울의 군대 대장 넬의 아들 아브넬이 사울의 아들 이스보셋을 데리고 마하나임으로 건너가서 But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, took Ish–bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
9 그를 길르앗과 아술 족속과 예스르엘과 에브라임과 베냐민과 온 이스라엘을 다스릴 왕으로 삼았더라. And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
10 사울의 아들 이스보셋이 이스라엘을 통치하기 시작할 때에 나이가 사십 세였으며 그가 이 년 동안 통치하니라. 그러나 유다의 집은 다윗을 따르더라. Ish–bosheth Saul’s son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
11 다윗이 헤브론에서 왕이 되어 유다의 집을 다스린 기간은 칠 년 육 개월이더라. And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12 ¶넬의 아들 아브넬과 사울의 아들 이스보셋의 신하들은 마하나임에서 나와 기브온으로 가고 And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish–bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13 스루야의 아들 요압과 다윗의 신하들은 나가서 기브온 연못가에서 함께 만나니라. 그들이 앉되 한 쪽은 연못 이편에, 다른 쪽은 연못 저편에 앉았더라. And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
14 아브넬이 요압에게 이르되, 이제 청년들이 일어나 우리 앞에서 겨루게 하자, 하니 요압이 이르되, 그들이 일어나게 하라, 하매 And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.
15 그때에 사울의 아들 이스보셋에게 속한 베냐민의 열두 명과 다윗의 신하 중의 열두 명이 수효대로 일어나서 나아가더라. Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ish–bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
16 그들이 각각 자기 상대의 머리를 잡고 칼로 상대의 옆구리를 찌르매 그들이 함께 쓰러졌으므로 기브온에 있는 그곳을 헬갓핫수림이라 하였더라. And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath–hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
17 그 날 싸움이 매우 심하였고 아브넬과 이스라엘 사람들이 다윗의 신하들 앞에서 패하였더라. And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
18 ¶거기에 스루야의 세 아들 요압과 아비새와 아사헬이 있었는데 아사헬은 발이 들노루같이 가볍더라. And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.
19 아사헬이 아브넬을 추격하며 갈 때에 오른쪽으로나 왼쪽으로나 치우치지 아니하고 아브넬의 뒤를 쫓으니라. And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.
20 이에 아브넬이 자기 뒤를 바라보며 이르되, 네가 아사헬이냐? 하니 그가 대답하되, 그러하다, 하매 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.
21 아브넬이 그에게 이르되, 너는 네 오른쪽으로나 왼쪽으로나 치우쳐서 청년들 중의 하나를 붙잡고 그의 병기를 빼앗으라, 하되 아사헬이 치우치려 하지 아니하고 그의 뒤를 쫓으니 And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
22 아브넬이 다시 아사헬에게 이르되, 너는 치우쳐서 나를 쫓지 말라. 어찌하여 내가 너를 쳐서 땅에 쓰러지게 하겠느냐? 그리하면 내가 어떻게 네 형 요압에게 얼굴을 들겠느냐? 하되 And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?
23 그가 치우치기를 거절하므로 아브넬이 창 뒤끝으로 그의 다섯째 갈빗대 밑을 치니 창이 그의 등 뒤로 나가므로 그가 거기에 쓰러져 바로 그 자리에서 죽으니라. 아사헬이 쓰러져 죽은 곳에 이른 많은 자들이 가만히 섰더라. Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
24 요압과 아비새가 아브넬을 추격하였는데 그들이 기브온 광야의 길옆 기아 앞에 있는 암마 산에 이를 때에 해가 졌더라. Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
25 ¶베냐민 자손이 함께 모여 아브넬을 따라서 한 떼를 이루고 작은 산꼭대기에 섰더라. And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.
26 그때에 아브넬이 요압을 부르며 이르되, 칼이 영원토록 삼키겠느냐? 마지막 끝에는 그것이 쓰라림이 될 줄을 네가 알지 못하느냐? 그런즉 네가 백성에게 그들의 형제들 쫓기를 그만두고 돌아오라고 명령하기까지 얼마나 더 걸리겠느냐? 하매 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?
27 요압이 이르되, 하나님께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 네가 말을 하지 아니하였더라면 분명히 백성이 아침에 각각 자기 형제 쫓기를 그만두고 올라갔으리라, 하더라. And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
28 그리하여 요압이 나팔을 불매 온 백성이 가만히 서고 더 이상 이스라엘을 추격하지 아니하며 다시는 싸우지 아니하니라. So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
29 아브넬과 그의 사람들이 그 온밤에 걸어서 평야를 지나 요르단을 건너고 온 비드론을 지나서 마하나임에 이르니라. And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.
30 요압이 아브넬 쫓기를 그치고 돌아와서 온 백성을 함께 모으니 다윗의 신하들 중에서 열아홉 명과 아사헬이 없더라. And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel.
31 그러나 다윗의 신하들이 베냐민과 아브넬의 사람들을 치매 삼백육십 명이 죽었더라. But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.
32 ¶그들이 아사헬을 취해 베들레헴에 있던 그의 아버지의 돌무덤에 묻고 요압과 그의 사람들이 밤새도록 가서 동이 틀 때 헤브론에 이르렀더라. And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth–lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.
