1 마침 거기에 세바라는 이름의 벨리알의 사람 하나가 있었는데 그는 베냐민 족속 비그리의 아들이더라. 그가 나팔을 불며 이르되, 우리에게는 다윗 안에서 얻을 몫이 없으며 이새의 아들 안에서 얻을 상속 재산이 없도다. 오 이스라엘아, 각각 자기 장막으로 돌아가라, 하매 And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite: and he blew a trumpet, and said, We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel.
2 이에 이스라엘의 모든 사람이 다윗 따르기를 그치고 올라가서 비그리의 아들 세바를 따랐으나 유다 사람들은 요르단에서부터 예루살렘까지 자기들의 왕에게 굳게 붙으니라. So every man of Israel went up from after David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri: but the men of Judah clave unto their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem.
3 ¶다윗이 예루살렘에 있는 자기 집에 이르러 전에 그 집을 지키게 하려고 남겨 둔 열 명의 여인들 곧 자기 첩들을 데려다가 가두는 곳에 두고 먹을 것을 주며 그들에게 들어가지 아니하매 그들이 이와 같이 죽는 날까지 갇혀서 과부로 사니라. And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward, and fed them, but went not in unto them. So they were shut up unto the day of their death, living in widowhood.
4 ¶그때에 왕이 아마사에게 이르되, 나를 위하여 사흘 안으로 유다 사람들을 소집하고 너도 여기에 있으라, 하니 Then said the king to Amasa, Assemble me the men of Judah within three days, and be thou here present.
5 이에 아마사가 유다 사람들을 소집하러 갔으나 그가 그에게 정해 준 약정 시간보다 더 오래 머무니라. So Amasa went to assemble the men of Judah: but he tarried longer than the set time which he had appointed him.
6 다윗이 아비새에게 이르되, 이제 비그리의 아들 세바가 압살롬보다 우리에게 더 많은 해를 끼치리니 너는 네 주의 신하들을 거느리고 그를 추격하라. 그가 성벽을 두른 도시에 들어가서 우리를 피할까 염려하노라, 하매 And David said to Abishai, Now shall Sheba the son of Bichri do us more harm than did Absalom: take thou thy lord’s servants, and pursue after him, lest he get him fenced cities, and escape us.
7 요압의 사람들과 그렛 족속과 블렛 족속과 모든 용사들이 그를 따라 나가며 비그리의 아들 세바를 추격하려고 예루살렘에서 나가 And there went out after him Joab’s men, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men: and they went out of Jerusalem, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.
8 기브온에 있는 큰 돌에 이르렀을 때에 아마사가 그들 앞에 나오니라. 요압이 자기가 입은 의복을 졸라매고 그 위에 띠를 띠고 칼집에 꽂은 칼을 허리에 찼는데 그가 나아갈 때에 칼이 빠져나왔더라. When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa went before them. And Joab’s garment that he had put on was girded unto him, and upon it a girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the sheath thereof; and as he went forth it fell out.
9 요압이 아마사에게 이르되, 내 형제여, 건강하냐? 하며 오른손으로 아마사의 수염을 잡고 그에게 입을 맞추려 하였으나 And Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him.
10 아마사가 요압의 손에 있던 칼에 주의를 기울이지 아니하므로 이에 그가 칼로 그의 다섯째 갈빗대를 치매 그의 창자가 땅에 흘러 나와 다시 치지 아니하여도 그가 죽으니라. 이처럼 요압과 그의 동생 아비새가 비그리의 아들 세바를 추격하였더라. But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab’s hand: so he smote him therewith in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. So Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.
11 요압의 사람들 중의 하나가 그의 옆에 서서 이르되, 요압을 좋아하는 자와 다윗을 위하는 자는 요압을 따르라, 하였더라. And one of Joab’s men stood by him, and said, He that favoureth Joab, and he that is for David, let him go after Joab.
12 아마사가 큰길 한가운데서 피 속에 뒹굴고 있으므로 그 사람이 온 백성이 멈추어 선 것을 보고는 아마사를 큰길에서부터 밭으로 옮기고 또 그의 옆으로 온 자마다 멈추어 선 것을 보고는 그 위에 옷을 덮으니라. And Amasa wallowed in blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a cloth upon him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still.
13 그를 큰길에서 옮긴 뒤에 온 백성이 요압을 따라가서 비그리의 아들 세바를 추격하니라. When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.
14 ¶그가 이스라엘의 모든 지파를 두루 지나며 아벨과 벧마아가와 온 베리 족속에게 이르니 그들도 함께 모여 그를 따르더라. And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel, and to Beth–maachah, and all the Berites: and they were gathered together, and went also after him.
15 그들이 가서 벧마아가의 아벨에서 그를 에워싸고 그 도시를 향하여 둑을 쌓으니 그 둑이 도랑 위에 있더라. 요압과 함께한 온 백성이 성벽을 쳐서 허물어뜨리려 하였더라. And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth–maachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and it stood in the trench: and all the people that were with Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.
16 ¶그때에 그 도시에서 한 지혜로운 여인이 외쳐 이르되, 들을지어다, 들을지어다, 청하건대 요압에게 말하기를, 여기로 가까이 오라. 내가 당신과 말하려 하노라, 하라, 하니라. Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near hither, that I may speak with thee.
17 그가 그녀에게 가까이 가매 여인이 이르되, 당신이 요압이니이까? 그가 대답하되, 그러하다, 하니 이에 그녀가 그에게 이르되, 당신의 여종의 말을 들으소서, 하거늘 그가 응답하되, 내가 듣느니라, 하매 And when he was come near unto her, the woman said, Art thou Joab? And he answered, I am he. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thine handmaid. And he answered, I do hear.
18 이에 그녀가 말하여 이르되, 옛날에 그들이 흔히 말하며 이르기를, 그들이 반드시 아벨에서 조언을 구할 것이라, 하고 그렇게 그들이 일을 끝내었나이다. Then she spake, saying, They were wont to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely ask counsel at Abel: and so they ended the matter.
19 나는 이스라엘에서 평화롭고 신실하게 사는 자들 중의 하나이거늘 당신이 이스라엘에서 한 도시와 한 어머니를 멸하려 하시나이다. 어찌하여 당신이 주의 상속 재산을 삼키려 하시나이까? 하매 I am one of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: thou seekest to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of the Lord?
20 요압이 대답하여 이르되, 결단코 그렇지 아니하니라. 결단코 그렇지 아니하니라. 내가 삼키거나 멸하려 하지 아니하노니 And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy.
21 그 일이 그렇지 아니하니라. 단지 에브라임 산에서 나온 자 곧 이름이 비그리의 아들 세바라 하는 자가 자기 손을 들어 왕 곧 다윗을 치고자 하였나니 그만 넘겨주면 내가 도시에서 떠나가리라, 하매 여인이 요압에게 이르되, 보소서, 성벽 너머로 그의 머리를 당신에게 던지리이다, 하고 The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.
22 이에 여인이 지혜롭게 온 백성에게 가니 그들이 비그리의 아들 세바의 머리를 베어 요압에게 던지므로 그가 나팔을 불매 그들이 그 도시에서 물러나 각각 자기 장막으로 돌아가고 요압은 예루살렘으로 돌아와 왕에게 이르니라. Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to Joab. And he blew a trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.
23 ¶이제 요압은 이스라엘 온 군대를 다스리는 자가 되고 여호야다의 아들 브나야는 그렛 족속과 블렛 족속을 다스리는 자가 되며 Now Joab was over all the host of Israel: and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites:
24 아도람은 공세를 감독하는 자가 되고 아힐룻의 아들 여호사밧은 기록관이 되며 And Adoram was over the tribute: and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder:
25 스와는 서기관이 되고 사독과 아비아달은 제사장이 되며 And Sheva was scribe: and Zadok and Abiathar were the priests:
26 또 야일 족속 이라는 다윗을 보좌하는 우두머리 치리자가 되니라. And Ira also the Jairite was a chief ruler about David.
