1 그 해가 지나고 왕들이 싸우러 나아갈 때가 되매 다윗이 요압과 자기 신하들과 온 이스라엘을 보내니 그들이 암몬 자손을 멸하고 랍바를 에워쌌더라. 그러나 다윗은 예루살렘에 여전히 머물러 있었더라. And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.
2 ¶저녁때에 다윗이 자기 침상에서 일어나 왕의 집 지붕 위에서 거닐다가 한 여인이 목욕하는 것을 지붕에서 보았는데 그 여인이 보기에 매우 아름다우므로 And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
3 다윗이 사람을 보내어 그 여인에 관해 물어보게 하였더니 한 사람이 이르되, 이 여인은 엘리암의 딸이요, 헷 족속 우리야의 아내인 밧세바가 아니니이까? 하니라. And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath–sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
4 다윗이 사자들을 보내어 그녀를 데려오게 하니 그녀가 그에게로 들어오니라. 그녀가 그녀의 부정함에서 정결하게 되었으므로 그가 그녀와 함께 누웠고 그녀가 자기 집으로 돌아가니라. And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
5 그 여인이 수태하매 사람을 보내어 다윗에게 고하여 이르되, 내가 아이를 가졌나이다, 하니라. And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
6 ¶다윗이 요압에게 사람을 보내어 이르기를, 헷 족속 우리야를 내게로 보내라, 하매 요압이 우리야를 다윗에게로 보내니 And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.
7 우리야가 그에게 이르매 다윗이 그에게 요압이 어떻게 행하는지, 백성은 어떻게 행하는지 그리고 싸움은 잘 되어 가는지 다그쳐 묻고 And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered.
8 다윗이 또 우리야에게 이르되, 네 집으로 내려가서 네 발을 씻으라, 하니 우리야가 왕의 집에서 떠나매 왕에게서 온 음식물이 그의 뒤를 따르니라. And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king.
9 그러나 우리야는 왕의 집 문에서 자기 주의 모든 종들과 함께 자고 자기 집으로 내려가지 아니하였으므로 But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
10 그들이 다윗에게 고하여 이르되, 우리야가 자기 집으로 내려가지 아니하였나이다, 하니 다윗이 우리야에게 이르되, 네가 여행에서 돌아오지 아니하였느냐? 그런데 어찌하여 네 집으로 내려가지 아니하였느냐? 하매 And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house?
11 우리야가 다윗에게 이르되, 궤와 이스라엘과 유다가 장막에서 머물고 또 내 주 요압과 내 주의 종들이 빈 들에서 진을 치고 있거늘 내가 내 집으로 가서 먹고 마시고 내 아내와 함께 누우리이까? 왕께서 살아 계심과 왕의 혼이 살아 있음을 두고 맹세하거니와 내가 이 일을 행하지 아니하겠나이다, 하니 And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
12 다윗이 우리야에게 이르되, 오늘도 여기에서 머무르라. 내일은 내가 너를 떠나가게 하리라, 하매 이에 우리야가 그 날과 그 다음 날에 예루살렘에서 머무니라. And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.
13 다윗이 그를 불러서 그로 하여금 자기 앞에서 먹고 마시고 취하게 하니 저녁때에 그가 나가서 자기 주의 종들과 함께 침상에 눕고 자기 집으로 내려가지 아니하니라. And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
14 ¶아침이 되매 다윗이 요압에게 편지를 써서 우리야의 손에 보내니라. And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
15 그가 편지에 써서 이르기를, 너희는 우리야를 가장 맹렬한 싸움의 최전방에 두고 그로부터 물러가서 그가 맞아 죽게 하라, 하였더라. And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.
16 요압이 도시를 살피고는 자기가 알기에 용맹한 자들이 있던 장소에 우리야를 배치하니 And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were.
17 그 도시의 사람들이 나와서 요압과 싸울 때에 다윗의 신하 백성 중에서 몇 사람이 쓰러지고 헷 족속 우리야도 죽으니라. And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
18 ¶이에 요압이 사람을 보내어 전쟁에 관한 모든 일을 다윗에게 고하며 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;
19 사자에게 명하여 이르되, 네가 전쟁에 관한 일들을 왕께 고하기를 마친 뒤에 And charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling the matters of the war unto the king,
20 혹시 왕이 진노하여 네게 말씀하시기를, 너희가 싸울 때에 어찌하여 도시에 그처럼 가까이 갔느냐? 그들이 성벽에서 쏠 줄을 너희가 알지 못하였느냐? And if so be that the king’s wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?
21 누가 여룹베셋의 아들 아비멜렉을 쳤느냐? 한 여인이 성벽에서 맷돌 한 짝을 그 위에 던지매 그가 데베스에서 죽지 아니하였느냐? 어찌하여 너희가 성벽에 가까이 갔느냐? 하시거든 너는 말하기를, 왕의 종 헷 족속 우리야도 죽었나이다, 하라, 하니라. Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
22 ¶이에 사자가 가서 다윗에게 이르러 요압이 자기를 보내어 알게 한 모든 것을 알리니라. So the messenger went, and came and shewed David all that Joab had sent him for.
23 사자가 다윗에게 이르되, 확실히 그 사람들이 우리보다 우세하여 우리를 향해 들로 나오므로 우리가 그들을 덮쳐서 성문 입구에까지 이르렀더니 And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate.
24 활 쏘는 자들이 성벽 위에서 왕의 신하들을 향하여 쏘므로 왕의 신하들 중에서 몇 사람이 죽었고 왕의 종 헷 족속 우리야도 죽었나이다, 하니라. And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king’s servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
25 그때에 다윗이 사자에게 이르되, 너는 요압에게 이같이 말하기를, 너는 이 일을 불쾌히 여기지 말라. 칼은 이 사람도 삼키고 저 사람도 삼키나니 그 도시를 향해 더욱 힘써 싸워 그것을 정복하라, 하고 너는 그의 용기를 북돋우라, 하니라. Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.
26 ¶우리야의 아내가 자기 남편 우리야가 죽었다는 것을 듣고 자기 남편으로 인하여 애곡하니라. And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.
27 애곡하는 일을 마치매 다윗이 사람을 보내어 그녀를 자기 집으로 데려오니 그녀가 그의 아내가 되어 그에게 아들을 낳으니라. 그러나 다윗이 행한 그 일을 주께서 기뻐하지 아니하시니라. And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.
