1 이제 기스라는 이름의 베냐민 사람이 있었는데 그는 아비엘의 아들이요, 스롤의 손자요, 베고랏의 증손이요, 아비아의 사대 손으로 베냐민 족속이며 능력 있고 강력한 자더라. Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.
2 그에게 사울이라는 이름의 아들이 있었는데 그는 준수한 젊은이로 잘생겼더라. 이스라엘 자손 가운데 그보다 더 잘생긴 자가 없었고 또 그는 백성 중의 어떤 사람보다 자기 어깨로부터 위만큼 키가 더 크더라. And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
3 사울의 아버지 기스가 나귀들을 잃어버리매 자기 아들 사울에게 이르되, 이제 종 하나를 데리고 일어나 가서 나귀들을 찾으라, 하니 And the asses of Kish Saul’s father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.
4 그가 에브라임 산과 살리사 땅을 두루 다녔으나 그들이 그것들을 찾지 못하니라. 이에 그들이 살림 땅으로 두루 다녔으나 그것들이 거기에 없더라. 그가 베냐민 족속의 땅으로 두루 다녔으나 그들이 그것들을 찾지 못하니라. And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.
5 그들이 숩 땅에 이르렀을 때에 사울이 자기와 함께한 자기 종에게 이르되, 오라, 우리가 돌아가자. 내 아버지가 나귀들 걱정은 그치고 우리를 위하여 염려하실까 두려워하노라, 하니 And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought for us.
6 그가 그에게 이르되, 이제 보소서, 이 도시에 하나님의 사람이 있는데 그는 존귀한 사람이니이다. 그가 말하는 모든 것은 반드시 이루어지니 이제 우리가 거기로 가사이다. 혹시 그가 우리가 가야 할 우리의 길을 보여 줄까 하나이다, 하므로 And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go.
7 그때에 사울이 자기 종에게 이르되, 그러나, 보라, 우리가 가면 그 사람에게 무엇을 가져가겠느냐? 우리 그릇에 있는 빵을 다 썼으니 하나님의 사람에게 가져갈 예물이 없도다. 우리에게 무엇이 있느냐? 하매 Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?
8 그 종이 사울에게 다시 대답하여 이르되, 보소서, 내게 여기 은 일 세겔의 사분의 일이 손에 있으니 내가 그것을 하나님의 사람에게 드리고 우리의 길을 우리에게 알려 달라 하겠나이다, 하니라. And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.
9 (예전에 이스라엘에서는 사람이 하나님께 가서 여쭈려 할 때에 이같이 말하기를, 오라, 우리가 선견자에게로 가자, 하였더라. 지금 대언자라 부르는 사람을 예전에는 선견자라 불렀더라.) (Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)
10 그때에 사울이 자기 종에게 이르되, 잘 말하였도다. 오라, 우리가 가자, 하고 이와 같이 그들이 하나님의 사람이 있던 도시로 가니라. Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.
11 ¶그들이 도시를 향한 작은 산으로 올라가다가 물 길러 나오는 어린 소녀들을 만나 그들에게 이르되, 선견자가 여기 있느냐? 하매 And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?
12 그들이 그들에게 대답하여 이르되, 있나이다. 보소서, 그가 당신들보다 앞섰으니 이제 서두르소서. 오늘 산당에서 백성이 희생물을 드리므로 그가 오늘 도시에 왔나이다. And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:
13 당신들이 도시로 들어가면 그가 먹으러 산당에 올라가기 전에 즉시 그를 만나리이다. 그가 오기 전에는 백성이 먹지 아니하리니 그가 희생물을 축복하므로 그 뒤에야 초청 받은 자들이 먹나이다. 그러므로 당신들은 지금 올라가소서. 이때쯤 당신들이 그를 만나리이다, 하니라. As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.
14 그들이 도시로 올라가서 도시에 들어갈 때에, 보라, 사무엘이 산당으로 올라가려고 그들을 향하여 나오더라. And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.
15 ¶이제 사울이 오기 하루 전에 주께서 사무엘의 귀에 대고 그에게 말씀하여 이르시되, Now the Lord had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,
16 내일 이맘때에 내가 베냐민 땅에서 한 사람을 네게 보내리니 너는 그에게 기름을 부어 내 백성 이스라엘의 대장으로 삼으라. 그가 내 백성을 블레셋 사람들의 손에서 구원하리니 내 백성의 부르짖음이 내게 이르렀으므로 내가 그들을 돌아보았느니라, 하시니라. To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
17 사무엘이 사울을 볼 때에 주께서 그에게 이르시되, 내가 네게 말한 사람을 보라! 바로 이 사람이 내 백성을 통치하리라, 하시니라. And when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.
18 그때에 사울이 성문에서 사무엘에게 가까이 가서 이르되, 원하건대 선견자의 집이 어디인지 내게 말해 주소서, 하니 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer’s house is.
19 사무엘이 사울에게 응답하여 이르되, 내가 선견자니라. 나보다 앞서 산당으로 올라가라. 너희가 오늘 나와 함께 먹을 것이요, 내일 내가 너를 가게 하고 또 네 마음속에 있는 모든 것을 네게 말하리라. And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.
20 사흘 전에 잃은 네 나귀들에 관하여는 네 생각을 그것들에 두지 말라. 그것들을 찾았느니라. 이스라엘의 모든 열망이 누구에게 있느냐? 너와 네 아버지의 온 집에게 있지 아니하냐? 하니 And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?
21 사울이 대답하여 이르되, 나는 이스라엘 지파 중에서 가장 작은 지파 출신으로 베냐민 족속이 아니니이까? 또한 내 가족은 베냐민 지파의 모든 가족들 중에서 가장 작지 아니하니이까? 그런데 당신이 어찌하여 내게 이같이 말씀하시나이까? 하니라. And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?
22 사무엘이 사울과 그의 종을 안내하여 객실로 그들을 데리고 들어가 초청 받은 자들 가운데 가장 으뜸가는 자리에 앉게 하였는데 초청 받은 자들은 삼십 명가량이더라. And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons.
23 사무엘이 요리하는 자에게 이르되, 내가 네게 주며 네 옆에 두라고 말한 그 부분을 가져오라, 하니 And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.
24 요리하는 자가 어깨와 그 위에 붙은 것을 가져다가 사울 앞에 놓으매 사무엘이 이르되, 남겨 둔 저것을 보라! 네 앞에 놓고 먹으라. 내가 말하기를, 내가 백성을 초청하였다, 한 때부터 너를 위하여 이때까지 그것을 남겨 두었느니라, 하니 이처럼 그 날에 사울이 사무엘과 함께 먹으니라. And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
25 ¶그들이 산당에서 내려와 도시로 들어간 뒤 사무엘이 사울과 함께 집의 지붕에서 대화하니라. And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
26 그들이 일찍 일어나니라. 동이 틀 무렵에 사무엘이 집의 지붕으로 사울을 불러 이르되, 일어나라. 내가 너를 보내리라, 하매 사울이 일어나고 그들 두 사람 곧 사울과 사무엘이 함께 밖으로 나가니라. And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.
27 그들이 도시 끝으로 내려갈 때에 사무엘이 사울에게 이르기를, 종에게 명령하여 우리보다 앞서 가게 하되 (그가 앞서 가더라.) 너는 잠깐 서 있으라. 내가 하나님의 말씀을 네게 알려 주리라, 하니라. And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.
