1 사무엘의 말이 온 이스라엘에게 이르니라. 이제 이스라엘은 나가서 블레셋 사람들과 싸우려고 에벤에셀 옆에 진을 치고 블레셋 사람들은 아벡에 진을 쳤더라. And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben–ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
2 블레셋 사람들이 이스라엘을 치려고 전열을 갖추니라. 그들이 함께 싸우다가 이스라엘이 블레셋 사람들 앞에서 패하니 그들이 들에 있던 군대 중에서 사천 명가량을 죽이니라. And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
3 ¶백성이 진영으로 돌아오매 이스라엘의 장로들이 이르되, 주께서 어찌하여 우리를 오늘 블레셋 사람들 앞에서 치셨느냐? 우리가 실로에서 주의 언약 궤를 우리에게로 가져오고 그것이 우리 가운데 올 때에 우리 원수들의 손에서 우리를 구원하게 하자, 하니라. And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
4 이에 백성이 사람을 실로에 보내었으니 이것은 그들이 그룹들 사이에 거하시는 만군의 주의 언약 궤를 거기서 가져오고자 함이더라. 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스가 하나님의 언약 궤와 함께 거기 있더라. So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 주의 언약 궤가 진영에 들어올 때에 온 이스라엘이 큰 소리로 외치매 땅이 다시 울리므로 And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.
6 블레셋 사람들이 그 외치는 소리를 듣고 이르되, 히브리 사람들의 진영에서 이같이 큰 소리로 외침은 무엇을 뜻하느냐? 하다가 주의 궤가 진영에 들어온 줄을 깨닫고 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the Lord was come into the camp.
7 블레셋 사람들이 두려워하여 이르기를, 하나님이 진영에 이르렀도다, 하고 또 그들이 이르기를, 우리에게 화가 있으리로다! 지금까지 그런 일이 없었도다. And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.
8 우리에게 화가 있으리로다! 누가 우리를 이 능한 신들의 손에서 건져 내리요? 이들은 광야에서 모든 재앙으로 이집트 사람들을 친 신들이니라. Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.
9 오 너희 블레셋 사람들아, 마음을 강하게 하고 남자답게 행동하여 히브리 사람들이 너희에게 종이 되었던 것 같이 너희가 그들에게 종이 되지 아니하도록 하고 남자답게 행동하여 싸우라, 하니라. Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.
10 ¶블레셋 사람들이 싸우매 이스라엘이 패하여 그들이 각각 자기 장막으로 도망하였고 거기에 심히 큰 살육이 있었으니 거기서 이스라엘의 보병 삼만 명이 쓰러졌더라. And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
11 또 하나님의 궤는 빼앗겼고 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스는 죽임을 당하였더라. And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
12 ¶바로 그 날에 어떤 베냐민 사람이 군대에서 달려 나와 자기 옷을 찢고 자기 머리에 흙을 뿌린 채 실로에 이르니라. And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
13 그가 이를 때에, 보라, 엘리가 길옆에 있던 자기 의자에 앉아 기다렸으니 이는 그의 마음이 하나님의 궤로 인하여 떨렸기 때문이라. 그 사람이 도시에 들어와 그 일을 고하매 온 도시가 부르짖으므로 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.
14 엘리가 그 부르짖는 소리를 듣고 이르되, 이 소동하는 소리는 무엇을 뜻하느냐? 하니 그 사람이 속히 와서 엘리에게 고하니라. And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.
15 이제 엘리는 구십팔 세더라. 그가 눈이 어두워서 보지 못하더라. Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.
16 그 사람이 엘리에게 이르되, 나는 군대에서 나온 자니이다. 내가 오늘 군대에서 도망하였나이다, 하니 그가 이르되, 내 아들아, 거기서 무슨 일이 일어났느냐? 하매 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
17 그 사자가 대답하여 이르되, 이스라엘이 블레셋 사람들 앞에서 도망하였고 또 백성 가운데는 큰 살육이 있었으며 당신의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 죽었고 하나님의 궤는 빼앗겼나이다, 하니라. And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
18 그가 하나님의 궤를 언급할 때에 엘리가 의자에서 뒤로 넘어져 문 옆에서 목이 부러져 죽었으니 이는 그가 노인이요, 또 몸이 무거웠기 때문이라. 그가 사십 년 동안 이스라엘을 재판하였더라. And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
19 ¶그의 며느리 곧 비느하스의 아내가 아이를 가져 해산할 때가 가까웠더라. 그녀가 하나님의 궤를 빼앗긴 것과 자기 시아버지와 남편이 죽었다는 소식을 듣고 몸을 구부린 채 산고를 겪었으니 이는 그녀에게 고통이 임하였기 때문이더라. And his daughter in law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.
20 그녀가 죽을 때에 그녀의 옆에 섰던 여인들이 그녀에게 이르되, 두려워하지 말라. 네가 아들을 낳았다, 하되 그녀가 응답하지도 아니하며 거기에 주의를 기울이지도 아니하고 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
21 말하기를, 영광이 이스라엘에서 떠났다, 하며 그 아이의 이름을 이가봇이라 하였으니 이는 하나님의 궤를 빼앗겼고 또 자기 시아버지와 남편이 죽었기 때문이더라. And she named the child I–chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
22 또 그녀가 말하기를, 하나님의 궤를 빼앗겼으므로 영광이 이스라엘에서 떠났다, 하였더라. And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
