| 1 | 그때에 암몬 족속 나하스가 올라와서 야베스길르앗을 마주보고 진을 치매 야베스의 모든 사람이 나하스에게 이르되, 우리와 언약을 맺으라. 그리하면 우리가 너를 섬기리라, 하니 | Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh–gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee. |
| 2 | 암몬 족속 나하스가 그들에게 응답하되, 내가 너희의 오른 눈을 다 빼내어 온 이스라엘 위에 그것을 수치거리로 두리라는 조건 하에서 너희와 언약을 맺으리라, 하거늘 | And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel. |
| 3 | 야베스의 장로들이 그에게 이르되, 우리에게 이레 동안의 유예 기간을 주어 우리가 이스라엘 온 지역에 사자들을 보내게 하라. 우리를 구원할 사람이 없으면 우리가 네게로 나가리라, 하니라. | And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee. |
| 4 | ¶이에 사자들이 사울의 기브아에 이르러 그 소식을 백성의 귀에 고하매 온 백성이 소리 높여 울더라. | Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept. |
| 5 | 보라, 마침 사울이 밭에서 소 떼를 따라 오다가 말하되, 무엇이 백성을 괴롭게 하기에 그들이 우느냐? 하매 그들이 야베스 사람들의 소식을 그에게 고하니라. | And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh. |
| 6 | 사울이 그 소식을 들을 때에 하나님의 영께서 그에게 임하셨으므로 그가 크게 분노하여 | And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly. |
| 7 | 한 겨리의 소들을 취해 그것들을 여러 조각으로 자르고 사자들의 손으로 그것들을 이스라엘 온 지역에 두루 보내며 이르되, 누구든지 나아와 사울과 사무엘을 따르지 아니하면 그의 소들도 이와 같이 되리라, 하였더니 주의 두려움이 백성에게 임하매 그들이 한마음으로 나오니라. | And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out with one consent. |
| 8 | 그가 베섹에서 그들의 수를 세니 이스라엘 자손이 삼십만 명이요, 유다 사람이 삼만 명이더라. | And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. |
| 9 | 그들이 거기 도착한 사자들에게 이르되, 너희는 야베스길르앗 사람들에게 이같이 말하기를, 내일 해가 뜨거울 때에 너희가 도움을 받으리라, 하라, 하니 사자들이 와서 야베스 사람들에게 그 일을 알리매 그들이 기뻐하니라. | And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh–gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad. |
| 10 | 그러므로 야베스 사람들이 이르되, 우리가 내일 너희에게로 나가리니 너희는 너희에게 좋게 보이는 모든 것을 우리에게 행하라, 하니라. | Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you. |
| 11 | 이처럼 다음 날 사울이 백성을 세 무리로 나누었더니 그들이 새벽 경점에 그 군대의 한가운데로 들어가 날이 뜨거울 때까지 암몬 족속을 죽이매 남은 자들이 흩어져서 그들 중 두 사람이 함께 남지 아니하였더라. | And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together. |
| 12 | ¶백성이 사무엘에게 이르되, 사울이 우리를 통치하겠느냐, 한 자가 누구니이까? 그 사람들을 끌어내소서. 우리가 그들을 죽이겠나이다, 하매 | And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death. |
| 13 | 사울이 이르되, 주께서 오늘 이스라엘 안에서 구원을 이루셨으므로 이 날에는 사람을 죽이지 못하리라, 하니라. | And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the Lord hath wrought salvation in Israel. |
| 14 | 그때에 사무엘이 백성에게 이르되, 오라, 우리가 길갈로 가서 거기서 왕국을 새롭게 하자, 하니 | Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there. |
| 15 | 온 백성이 길갈로 가니라. 거기서 그들이 길갈에서 주 앞에서 사울을 왕으로 삼고 거기서 주 앞에 화평 헌물의 희생물을 희생시켜 드리며 거기서 사울과 이스라엘의 모든 사람이 크게 기뻐하니라. | And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly. |
