1 사람들아, 형제들아, 아버지들아, 내가 이제 너희에게 변명하는 말을 들으라. Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.
2 (그가 히브리말로 자기들에게 말하는 것을 그들이 듣고 더욱 잠잠하거늘 그가 이르되,) (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)
3 진실로 나는 유대인으로 길리기아의 도시 다소에서 태어났으되 이 도시에서 가말리엘의 발밑에서 자라며 조상들의 율법의 완전한 방식에 따라 가르침을 받았고 이 날 너희 모든 사람처럼 하나님을 향해 열심이었노라. I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
4 내가 이 길을 핍박하여 사람을 죽이기까지 하고 남자들과 여자들을 다 결박하여 감옥에 넘겨주었노니 And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
5 대제사장과 장로의 신분을 가진 모든 사람들도 나에 대해 증언하느니라. 내가 또한 그들로부터 형제들에게 보내는 편지를 받아 다마스쿠스로 가서 거기 있던 자들도 결박하여 예루살렘으로 끌어다가 형벌을 받게 하려 하였노라. As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.
6 내가 길을 가다가 다마스쿠스에 가까이 갔을 때에 정오쯤 되어 갑자기 하늘로부터 큰 빛이 나와 나를 둘러 비추므로 And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.
7 내가 땅에 쓰러져 들으니 한 음성이 있어 내게 이르시되, 사울아, 사울아, 어찌하여 네가 나를 핍박하느냐? 하시거늘 And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
8 내가 대답하되, 주여, 누구시니이까? 하니 그분께서 내게 이르시되, 나는 네가 핍박하는 나사렛 예수라, 하시더라. And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
9 나와 함께 있던 사람들은 참으로 그 빛을 보고 두려워하였으나 내게 말씀하신 분의 음성은 듣지 못하였더라. And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
10 내가 이르되, 주여, 내가 무엇을 하여야 하리이까? 하매 주께서 내게 이르시되, 일어나 다마스쿠스로 들어가라. 그러면 네가 하도록 정해 놓은 모든 일을 거기서 듣게 되리라, 하시니라. And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.
11 내가 그 빛의 영광으로 인하여 볼 수 없게 되었으므로 나와 함께 있던 사람들의 손으로 인도를 받아 다마스쿠스로 들어갔노라. And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
12 율법에 따라 독실한 사람으로 거기 거하던 모든 유대인에게 평판이 좋은 아나니야라 하는 이가 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,
13 내게로 와 서서 내게 이르되, 형제 사울아, 네 시력을 받으라, 하매 그 즉시로 내가 그를 쳐다보았노라. Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.
14 그가 또 이르되, 우리 조상들의 하나님께서 너를 택하사 너로 하여금 자신의 뜻을 알게 하시며 저 의로우신 분을 보게 하시고 그분의 입에서 나오는 음성을 듣게 하셨으니 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.
15 네가 보고 들은 것에 대하여 모든 사람을 향해 네가 그분의 증인이 되리라. For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
16 이제 네가 왜 주저하느냐? 주의 이름을 부르며 일어나 침례를 받고 네 죄들을 씻어 버리라, 하더라. And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
17 그 뒤에 내가 다시 예루살렘으로 와서 성전에서 기도하다가 무의식 상태에서 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;
18 보니 그분께서 내게 이르시되, 서둘러 예루살렘을 속히 떠나라. 나에 대하여 네가 증언하는 것을 그들이 받지 아니하리라, 하시거늘 And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
19 내가 이르되, 주여, 내가 모든 회당에서 주를 믿는 사람들을 감옥에 가두고 또 때리며 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:
20 주의 순교자 스데반이 피를 흘릴 때에 나도 곁에 서서 그의 죽음에 동의하고 그를 죽인 자들의 옷을 지킨 것을 그들이 아나이다, 하니 And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.
21 그분께서 내게 이르시되, 떠나라. 내가 너를 여기에서 멀리 이방인들에게로 보내리라, 하셨느니라. And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.
22 그가 이 말하는 것까지 그들이 듣다가 소리를 높여 이르되, 이런 놈은 이 땅에서 없애 버리라. 그를 살려 두는 것은 마땅하지 아니하다, 하며 And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
23 소리를 지르고 옷을 벗어 던지며 먼지를 공중에 날리니 And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,
24 총대장이 그를 성채 안으로 데려가라고 명령하고 그들이 무슨 까닭으로 그에게 소리 지르는지 알려고 그를 채찍질해서 심문하라고 명하니라. The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.
25 그들이 가죽 끈으로 그를 묶으니 바울이 곁에 서 있던 백부장에게 이르되, 너희가 로마 사람인 자를 죄도 정하지 아니하고 채찍질하는 것이 법에 맞느냐? 하매 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
26 백부장이 그 말을 듣고 총대장에게 가서 전하여 이르되, 대장님이 행하시는 일에 주의하소서. 이 사람은 로마 사람이니이다, 하니 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
27 이에 총대장이 와서 그에게 이르되, 내게 말하라. 네가 로마 사람이냐? 하매 그가 이르되, 그러하다, 하거늘 Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.
28 총대장이 응답하되, 나는 많은 돈을 들여 이 자유를 얻었노라, 하니 바울이 이르되, 나는 태어나면서부터 자유로운 자니라, 하니라. And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.
29 이에 그를 심문하려던 사람들이 즉시 그에게서 물러가고 총대장도 그가 로마 사람인 줄을 알고는 자기가 그를 결박하였으므로 두려워하니라. Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
30 이튿날 총대장이 무슨 까닭으로 유대인들이 그를 고소하는지 그 진상을 알기 위해 그를 결박에서 풀어 주고 수제사장들과 그들의 온 공회에게 출두하라고 명령한 뒤 바울을 데리고 내려가 그들 앞에 세우니라. On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
