1 이제 르우벤 자손과 갓 자손에게는 가축이 심히 많더라. 그들이 야셀 땅과 길르앗 땅을 보니, 보라, 그곳은 가축에게 알맞은 장소이므로 Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;
2 갓 자손과 르우벤 자손이 와서 모세와 제사장 엘르아살과 회중의 통치자들에게 말하여 이르되, The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,
3 아다롯과 디본과 야셀과 니므라와 헤스본과 엘르알레와 스밤과 느보와 브온 Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,
4 곧 주께서 이스라엘 회중 앞에서 치신 지역은 가축에게 알맞은 땅이요, 당신의 종들에게는 가축이 있나이다, 하고 Even the country which the Lord smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle:
5 또 이르되, 그런즉 우리가 만일 당신의 눈앞에서 은혜를 입었으면 이 땅을 당신의 종들에게 소유로 주시고 우리를 요르단 너머로 데려가지 마소서, 하니라. Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.
6 ¶모세가 갓 자손과 르우벤 자손에게 이르되, 너희 형제들은 싸우러 가는데 너희는 여기에 앉아 있으려 하느냐? And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?
7 너희가 어찌하여 이스라엘 자손을 낙심하게 하여 주께서 그들에게 주신 땅으로 건너가지 못하게 하려느냐? And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the Lord hath given them?
8 너희 조상들도 내가 가데스바네아에서 그 땅을 보라고 보내었을 때에 그같이 하였나니 Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh–barnea to see the land.
9 그들이 에스골 골짜기에 올라가서 그 땅을 보고 이스라엘 자손을 낙심하게 하여 주께서 그들에게 주신 땅으로 가지 못하게 하였느니라. For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the Lord had given them.
10 바로 그때에 주의 분노가 타올라 그분께서 맹세하여 이르시되, And the Lord’s anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying,
11 이집트에서 나온 사람들 가운데 스무 살이 넘는 자들 중에서는 아무도 내가 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 맹세한 땅을 보지 못하리니 이는 그들이 나를 온전히 따르지 아니하였기 때문이니라. Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:
12 다만 그나스 족속 여분네의 아들 갈렙과 눈의 아들 여호수아는 그곳을 보리니 그들은 주를 온전히 따랐느니라, 하시고 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the Lord.
13 주의 분노가 이스라엘을 향해 타올라 그분께서 그들로 하여금 사십 년 동안 광야에서 방황하게 하셨으므로 마침내 주의 눈앞에서 악을 행한 그 세대가 모두 소멸되었느니라. And the Lord’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the Lord, was consumed.
14 보라, 너희는 너희 조상들을 대신하여 일어난 자들이요, 죄악으로 가득한 사람들의 소생으로서 이스라엘을 향한 주의 맹렬한 분노를 더욱 크게 만드는 자들이로다. And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers’ stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the Lord toward Israel.
15 너희가 만일 돌이켜서 그분을 떠나면 그분께서 또 다시 그들을 광야에 버리시리니 이로써 너희가 이 온 백성을 멸망시키리라, 하니라. For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.
16 ¶그들이 모세에게 가까이 나아와 이르되, 우리가 여기에서 우리의 가축을 위하여 우리를 짓고 우리의 어린것들을 위하여 도시들을 건축하되 And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:
17 우리가 이스라엘 자손을 그들의 처소로 데려갈 때까지 스스로 무장하고 그들 앞에서 가리이다. 다만 우리의 어린것들은 이 땅의 거주민들로 인해 성벽을 두른 도시들에 거할 것이오며 But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
18 우리는 이스라엘 자손이 각각 자기의 상속 재산을 얻을 때까지 우리 집으로 돌아오지 아니하겠사오니 We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.
19 우리가 요르단 이편 곧 동편에서 우리의 상속 재산을 얻었으므로 그들과 함께 요르단 저편에서나 그 앞에서 상속을 받지 아니하리이다, 하니라. For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.
20 ¶모세가 그들에게 이르되, 너희가 만일 이 일을 행하여 무장하고 주 앞에서 가서 싸우되 And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the Lord to war,
21 너희가 다 무장하고 주 앞에서 요르단을 건너가 그분께서 자신의 원수들을 자신 앞에서 쫓아내시므로 And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the Lord, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,
22 그 땅이 주 앞에 항복하게 될 때까지 싸우면 그 이후에 너희가 주 앞에서와 이스라엘 앞에서 무죄가 되어 돌아오겠고 이 땅은 주 앞에서 너희 소유가 되리라. And the land be subdued before the Lord: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the Lord, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the Lord.
23 그러나 만일 너희가 그와 같이 하지 아니하면, 보라, 너희가 주께 죄를 지었으니 너희 죄가 너희를 찾아낼 줄을 분명히 알지니라. But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out.
24 너희는 너희의 어린것들을 위하여 도시들을 건축하고 너희 양을 위하여 우리를 지으라. 그리고 너희 입에서 낸 것을 행하라, 하니라. Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.
25 갓 자손과 르우벤 자손이 모세에게 말하여 이르되, 내 주께서 명령하시는 대로 주의 종들이 행하리이다. And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.
26 우리의 어린것들과 아내와 양 떼와 모든 가축은 거기에 길르앗의 도시들에 두려니와 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead:
27 주의 종들은 내 주께서 말씀하시는 대로 각각 싸움을 위해 무장하고 주 앞에서 건너가 싸우리이다, 하매 But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the Lord to battle, as my lord saith.
28 이에 모세가 그들에 관하여 제사장 엘르아살과 눈의 아들 여호수아와 이스라엘 자손 지파들의 우두머리 아버지들에게 명령하니라. So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:
29 모세가 그들에게 이르되, 만일 갓 자손과 르우벤 자손이 각각 무장하고 너희와 함께 요르단을 건너가 주 앞에서 싸워 그 땅이 너희 앞에 항복하게 되면 너희가 길르앗 땅을 그들에게 소유로 줄 것이로되 And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the Lord, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:
30 만일 그들이 무장하고 너희와 함께 건너가지 아니하거든 그들이 가나안 땅에서 너희 가운데서 소유를 취할 것이니라, 하니 But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.
31 갓 자손과 르우벤 자손이 응답하여 이르되, 주께서 당신의 종들에게 명령하신 대로 우리가 행하리이다. And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the Lord hath said unto thy servants, so will we do.
32 우리가 무장하고 주 앞에서 가나안 땅으로 건너가 요르단 이편에 있는 우리 상속 재산의 소유가 우리 것이 되게 하리이다, 하매 We will pass over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours.
33 모세가 갓 자손과 르우벤 자손과 요셉의 아들 므낫세의 반 지파에게 아모리 족속의 왕 시혼의 왕국과 바산 왕 옥의 왕국을 주되 곧 그 땅과 그 지역 안에 있는 그 땅의 도시들과 주변에 있는 그 지방의 도시들을 그들에게 주니라. And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.
34 ¶갓 자손은 디본과 아다롯과 아로엘과 And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
35 아드롯과 소반과 야셀과 욕브하와 And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah,
36 벧니므라와 벧하란과 성벽을 두른 도시들을 건축하고 또 양을 위해 우리를 지었으며 And Beth–nimrah, and Beth–haran, fenced cities: and folds for sheep.
37 르우벤 자손은 헤스본과 엘르알레와 기랴다임과 And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim,
38 느보와 바알므온을 건축하고 (그것들의 이름을 고쳤으며) 또 십마를 건축하고 자기들이 건축한 도시들에게 다른 이름을 주었더라. And Nebo, and Baal–meon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded.
39 므낫세의 아들인 마길의 자손이 길르앗에 가서 그것을 빼앗고 그 안에 있던 아모리 족속을 쫓아내매 And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it.
40 모세가 길르앗을 므낫세의 아들 마길에게 주니 그가 그 안에 거하니라. And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein.
41 므낫세의 아들 야일은 가서 그것의 작은 고을들을 빼앗고 그것들을 하봇야일이라 불렀으며 And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the small towns thereof, and called them Havoth–jair.
42 노바는 가서 그낫과 그것의 마을들을 빼앗고 자기 이름을 따라 그것을 노바라 불렀더라. And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
