1 이에 온 회중이 목소리를 높여 부르짖으며 백성이 그 밤에 울었더라. And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
2 이스라엘의 모든 자손이 모세와 아론에게 불평하며 온 회중이 그들에게 이르되, 우리가 이집트 땅에서 죽었더라면 좋았으리라! 우리가 이 광야에서 죽었더라면 좋았으리라! And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!
3 어찌하여 주께서는 우리를 이 땅으로 데려와 칼에 쓰러지게 하는가? 우리의 아내와 자녀들이 탈취물이 되리니 우리가 이집트로 돌아가는 것이 낫지 아니하랴? 하고 And wherefore hath the Lord brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
4 서로 이르되, 우리가 대장 한 명을 세우고 이집트로 돌아가자, 하매 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
5 그때에 모세와 아론이 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중의 집회 앞에서 얼굴을 대고 엎드리니라. Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6 ¶그 땅을 탐지한 자들 중에서 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여분네의 아들 갈렙이 자기 옷을 찢고 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
7 이스라엘 자손의 온 무리에게 말하여 이르되, 우리가 두루 다니며 탐지한 땅은 매우 좋은 땅이니라. And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
8 주께서 우리를 기뻐하시면 우리를 이 땅으로 데리고 들어가시고 그것을 우리에게 주시리라. 그것은 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅이니라. If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
9 오직 너희는 주를 대적하여 반역하지 말며 또 그 땅의 백성을 두려워하지 말라. 그들은 우리의 양식이니라. 그들의 방어자는 그들에게서 떠났고 주께서는 우리와 함께 계시느니라. 그들을 두려워하지 말라, 하였으나 Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.
10 온 회중이 그들을 돌로 치려 하매 주의 영광이 회중의 성막에서 이스라엘의 모든 자손 앞에 나타나니라. But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
11 ¶주께서 모세에게 이르시되, 이 백성이 어느 때까지 나를 격노하게 하려 하느냐? 내가 그들 가운데서 보여 준 모든 표적에도 불구하고 그들이 어느 때까지 나를 믿지 아니하려 하느냐? And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
12 내가 역병으로 그들을 쳐서 그들의 상속권을 박탈하고 너로부터 그들보다 더 크고 강한 민족을 만들리라, 하시니라. I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
13 ¶모세가 주께 아뢰되, 그리하시면 이집트 사람들이 그것을 듣고 (주께서 그들 가운데서 주의 능력으로 이 백성을 데리고 나오셨나이다.) And Moses said unto the Lord, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
14 이 땅의 거주민들에게 그것을 고하리이다. 주께서 이 백성 가운데 계시며 또 주께서 얼굴을 마주 대하여 보이시고 주의 구름이 이 백성 위에 서 있으며 주께서 낮에는 구름 기둥 가운데서 밤에는 불기둥 가운데서 이 백성 앞에 가시는 것을 그들이 들었나이다. And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou Lord art among this people, that thou Lord art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15 ¶이제 주께서 이 온 백성을 한 사람같이 죽이시면 주의 명성을 들은 민족들이 말하여 이르기를, Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,
16 주가 이 백성에게 주기로 맹세한 땅으로 그들을 데리고 들어갈 능력이 없으므로 그들을 광야에서 죽였다, 하리이다. Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
17 이제 간청하옵나니 이미 주께서 말씀하신 대로 내 주의 권능을 크게 나타내옵소서. 이르시기를, And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
18 주는 오래 참고 긍휼이 커서 불법과 범법을 용서하나 결코 죄 있는 자들의 죄를 깨끗이 치우지 아니하며 아버지들의 불법을 자손들에게 벌하여 삼사 대까지 이르게 하느니라, 하셨나이다. The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
19 간청하옵나니 주의 크신 긍휼에 따라 이 백성의 불법을 용서하시되 주께서 이집트 시절부터 지금까지 이 백성을 용서하신 것 같이 하옵소서, 하매 Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20 주께서 이르시되, 내가 네 말에 따라 용서하였노라. And the Lord said, I have pardoned according to thy word:
21 그러나 진실로 내가 살아 있음을 두고 맹세하노니 온 땅이 주의 영광으로 충만할 터인즉 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.
22 내 영광과 또 이집트와 광야에서 내가 행한 내 기적들을 보고도 이제 이같이 열 번이나 나를 시험하고 내 목소리에 귀를 기울이지 아니한 저 모든 사람들로 인하여 Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
23 그들은 내가 그들의 조상들에게 맹세한 땅을 결코 보지 못할 것이요, 또 나를 격노하게 한 사람들 중 아무도 그 땅을 보지 못하리라. Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
24 오직 내 종 갈렙은 다른 영을 지녀 나를 온전히 따랐은즉 그가 갔던 땅으로 내가 그를 데려가리니 그의 씨가 그 땅을 소유하리라. But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
25 (그런데 아말렉 족속과 가나안 족속이 골짜기에 거하였더라.) 너희는 내일 돌이켜서 홍해 길로 광야로 들어갈지니라. (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
26 ¶주께서 모세와 아론에게 말씀하여 이르시되, And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
27 내게 불평하는 이 악한 회중을 내가 어느 때까지 참으랴? 이스라엘 자손이 내게 불평하는 것 즉 그들의 불평하는 말을 내가 들었노라. How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28 그들에게 이르되, 주가 말하노라. 진실로 내가 살아 있음을 두고 맹세하거니와 너희가 내 귀에 말한 대로 내가 너희에게 행하리니 Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the Lord, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
29 너희 사체가 이 광야에 쓰러지되 곧 너희의 전체 수에 따라 너희 중에서 스무 살이 넘어 계수된 모든 자들 즉 내게 불평한 자들이 쓰러지며 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,
30 여분네의 아들 갈렙과 눈의 아들 여호수아 외에는 내가 맹세하여 너희로 하여금 거하게 하리라 한 땅에 너희가 결단코 들어가지 못하리라. Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31 그러나 너희가 탈취물이 되겠다고 말한 너희의 어린것들은 내가 데리고 들어가리니 그들은 너희가 멸시한 그 땅을 알게 되려니와 But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
32 너희에 관하여는 너희 사체가 이 광야에 쓰러질 것이요, But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
33 너희 자녀들은 너희의 행음을 짊어지고 너희 사체가 광야에서 소멸될 때까지 사십 년 동안 광야에서 헤매리라. And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
34 너희가 그 땅을 탐지한 날수 곧 사십 일의 하루를 일 년으로 환산하여 사십 년 동안 너희가 너희 불법들을 담당할지니 이로써 내가 약속을 깨뜨린 것을 너희가 알리라, 하라. After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
35 나 주가 말하였거니와 나를 대적하려고 함께 모인 이 악한 온 회중에게 내가 분명히 그 일을 행하리니 그들이 이 광야에서 소멸되어 거기서 죽으리라, 하시니라. I the Lord have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36 모세가 보내매 그 땅을 탐지하고 돌아와 그 땅에 관해 악평을 하여 온 회중으로 하여금 그를 향해 불평하게 한 사람들 And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
37 곧 그 땅에 관하여 나쁘게 보고한 그 사람들이 주 앞에서 재앙으로 말미암아 죽었고 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the Lord.
38 그 땅을 탐지하러 갔던 사람들 중에서 오직 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여분네의 아들 갈렙만 여전히 살았더라. But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
39 모세가 이스라엘의 모든 자손에게 이 말들을 고하매 백성이 크게 애곡하니라. And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
40 ¶그들이 아침에 일찍 일어나 산꼭대기로 올라가며 이르되, 보소서, 우리가 여기 있나이다. 우리가 주께서 약속하신 곳으로 올라가리니 이는 우리가 죄를 지었기 때문이니이다, 하매 And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the Lord hath promised: for we have sinned.
41 모세가 이르되, 너희가 어찌하여 이제 주의 명령을 범하느냐? 오직 그 일은 형통하지 못하리라. And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the Lord? but it shall not prosper.
42 주께서 너희 가운데 계시지 아니하니 올라가지 말라. 이것은 너희가 너희 원수들 앞에서 패하지 아니하게 하려 함이라. Go not up, for the Lord is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
43 아말렉 족속과 가나안 족속이 거기에서 너희 앞에 있으니 너희가 칼에 쓰러지리라. 너희가 주를 떠나 돌이켰으니 그러므로 주께서 너희와 함께하지 아니하시리라, 하였으나 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the Lord, therefore the Lord will not be with you.
44 그들이 자기 뜻대로 산꼭대기로 올라가니라. 그럼에도 불구하고 주의 언약 궤와 모세는 진영 밖으로 떠나지 아니하였더라. But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
45 그때에 아말렉 족속과 그 산에 거하던 가나안 족속이 내려와 그들을 쳐서 무찌르고 호르마에까지 이르렀더라. Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
