1 그 무렵에 침례자 요한이 와서 유대의 광야에서 선포하여 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
2 이르되, 너희는 회개하라. 하늘의 왕국이 가까이 왔느니라, 하였으니 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3 이 사람은 곧 주께서 대언자 이사야를 통해 말씀하신 자니라. 이르시되, 광야에서 외치는 자의 소리가 있어 이르기를, 너희는 주의 길을 예비하라. 그분의 행로들을 곧게 하라, 하였느니라. For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
4 바로 그 요한은 낙타털 옷을 입고 허리에 가죽 띠를 띠었으며 그의 음식은 메뚜기와 들 꿀이더라. And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
5 그때에 예루살렘과 온 유대와 요르단 사방의 온 지역이 그에게 나가 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan,
6 자기 죄들을 자백하며 요르단 속에서 그에게 침례를 받더라. And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 ¶그러나 바리새인들과 사두개인들 중의 많은 자들이 자기에게 침례를 받으러 오는 것을 그가 보고 그들에게 이르되, 오 독사들의 세대야, 누가 너희에게 경고하여 다가오는 진노를 피하게 하더냐? But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 그러므로 회개에 합당한 열매를 맺고 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9 너희 속으로, 우리에게는 아브라함이 우리 아버지로 있다, 하고 말할 생각을 하지 말라. 내가 너희에게 이르노니, 하나님께서는 능히 이 돌들로도 아브라함에게 자손들을 일으키실 수 있느니라. And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10 이제 또한 도끼가 나무들의 뿌리에 놓였으니 그러므로 좋은 열매를 맺지 아니하는 나무마다 찍혀 불 속에 던져지느니라. And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
11 참으로 나는 회개에 이르도록 너희에게 물로 침례를 주거니와 내 뒤에 오시는 분은 나보다 능력이 더 있으시매 나는 그분의 신발을 나를 자격도 없노라. 그분께서는 너희에게 성령님으로 침례를 주시고 불로 침례를 주시리니 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
12 곧 손에 키를 들고 자신의 타작마당을 철저히 정결케 하사 자신의 알곡은 모아 곳간에 들이시되 껍질은 끌 수 없는 불로 태우시리라, 하니라. Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
13 ¶그때에 예수님께서 갈릴리로부터 요르단으로 요한에게 오사 그에게 침례를 받으려 하시거늘 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
14 요한이 그분을 말리며 이르되, 내가 주께 침례를 받아야 할 터인데 주께서 내게로 오시나이까? 하매 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 예수님께서 대답하여 그에게 이르시되, 지금은 이렇게 되도록 허락하라. 이렇게 하여 모든 의를 성취하는 것이 우리에게 합당하니라, 하시니 이에 그가 그분을 허락하더라. And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16 예수님께서 침례를 받으시고 곧바로 물속에서 올라오실 때에, 보라, 하늘들이 그분께 열렸으며 또 하나님의 영께서 비둘기같이 내려와 자기 위에 내려앉는 것을 그분께서 보시더라. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 보라, 하늘로부터 한 음성이 있어 이르시되, 이 사람은 내 사랑하는 아들이라. 내가 그를 매우 기뻐하노라, 하시니라. And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
