1 하나님 곧 우리의 구원자와 우리의 소망이신 주 예수 그리스도의 명령으로 예수 그리스도의 사도가 된 바울은 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;
2 믿음 안에서 나의 아들이 된 디모데에게 편지하노니 하나님 우리 아버지와 예수 그리스도 우리 주로부터 은혜와 긍휼과 평강이 있기를 원하노라. Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
3 내가 마케도니아로 갈 때에 에베소에 여전히 머물 것을 내가 네게 간청하였나니 이것은 네가 어떤 사람들에게 명하여 그들이 다른 교리를 가르치지 못하게 하며 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
4 꾸며 낸 이야기와 끝없는 족보에 주의를 기울이지 못하게 하려 함이었느니라. 이런 것들은 믿음 안에 있는바 하나님의 뜻대로 세워 주는 일보다 오히려 논쟁을 일으키나니 그렇게 할지니라. Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
5 이제 명령의 목적은 순수한 마음과 선한 양심과 거짓 없는 믿음에서 나오는 사랑이거늘 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
6 어떤 사람들이 이것에서 벗어나 헛된 말다툼에 빠져 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;
7 율법의 선생이 되려 하나 그들은 자기들이 말하는 것이나 주장하는 것을 깨닫지 못하는도다. Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
8 그러나 율법은 사람이 그것을 적법하게 쓰면 선한 줄 우리가 아노라. But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
9 이것을 알라. 곧 율법은 의로운 사람으로 인해 만들어지지 아니하고 오직 법을 무시하는 자와 불순종하는 자와 경건치 아니한 자와 죄인과 거룩하지 아니한 자와 속된 자와 아버지를 죽이는 자와 어머니를 죽이는 자와 사람을 죽이는 자와 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
10 음행을 일삼는 자와 남자와 더불어 자기를 더럽히는 자와 사람을 납치하는 자와 거짓말하는 자와 위증하는 자와 그밖에 무엇이든지 건전한 교리에 역행하는 것으로 인해 만들어졌느니라. For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
11 이 교리는 내게 맡기신 복음 곧 찬송 받으실 하나님의 영광스러운 복음에 따른 것이니라. According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
12 나를 능하게 하신 그리스도 예수 우리 주께 내가 감사를 드림은 그분께서 나를 신실한 자로 여기사 내게 사역을 맡기셨기 때문이라. And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;
13 내가 전에는 신성모독하는 자요, 핍박하는 자요, 해를 끼치는 자였으나 도리어 긍휼을 얻게 됨은 내가 믿지 아니하는 가운데 알지 못하고 그것을 하였기 때문이라. Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
14 우리 주의 은혜가 그리스도 예수님 안에 있는 믿음과 사랑과 함께 넘치도록 풍성하였도다. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
15 이것은 신실한 말이요 온전히 받아들이기에 합당한 말이니 곧 그리스도 예수님께서 죄인들을 구원하시려고 세상에 오셨다는 말이로다. 죄인들 중에 내가 우두머리니라. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
16 그러나 예수 그리스도께서 먼저 내 안에서 모든 오래 참으심을 보이사 이후에 자신을 믿어 영존하는 생명에 이르게 될 자들에게 본이 되게 하셨으니 이런 까닭으로 내가 긍휼을 얻었느니라. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
17 이제 영원하신 왕 곧 죽지 아니하시고 보이지 아니하시고 홀로 지혜로우신 하나님께 존귀와 영광이 영원무궁토록 있기를 원하노라. 아멘. Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
18 아들 디모데야, 전에 너에 관하여 주어진 대언들에 따라 내가 네게 이 책무를 주노니 곧 너는 그것들을 힘입어 선한 싸움을 싸우며 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
19 믿음과 선한 양심을 붙들라. 어떤 자들이 그것을 버리고 믿음에 관하여는 파선하였느니라. Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:
20 그중에 후메내오와 알렉산더가 있는데 내가 그들을 사탄에게 넘겨준 것은 그들이 배워서 신성모독하지 못하게 하려 함이라. Of whom is Hymeneus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.
