1 이제 산발랏과 도비야와 아라비아 사람 게셈과 우리의 원수들 중 남은 자들이 내가 이미 성벽을 건축하여 그 안에 무너진 곳을 남기지 아니하였다는 것을 들었는데 (그때까지도 내가 아직 성문에 문짝을 달지 못하였느니라.) Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)
2 산발랏과 게셈이 내게 사람을 보내어 이르기를, 오라, 우리가 오노 평야의 마을들 중 어느 하나에서 함께 만나자, 하였으나 그들은 내게 해를 끼치려고 생각하였더라. That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.
3 내가 그들에게 사자들을 보내어 이르기를, 내가 지금 큰일을 하는 중이므로 내려가지 못하겠노라. 어찌하여 내가 그 일을 버려두고 너희에게로 내려가서 그 일이 중단되게 하겠느냐? 하매 And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?
4 그럼에도 그들이 네 번이나 이런 식으로 내게 사람을 보내되 내가 같은 식으로 그들에게 대답하였더니 Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.
5 그때에 산발랏이 자기 종의 손에 봉하지 않은 편지를 들려 같은 식으로 다섯 번째로 자기 종을 내게 보내며 Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;
6 그 편지에 쓰기를, 이교도들 가운데 그 일이 알려졌고 가스무도 너와 유대인들이 반역할 것을 생각한다고 말하나니 그런 까닭에 네가 성벽을 건축하여 이 말들대로 그들의 왕이 되려 하는도다. Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.
7 또 네가 대언자들을 임명하여 예루살렘에서 너에 관해 선포하여 이르기를, 유다에 왕이 있다, 하게 하였으니 이제 이 말들대로 그 일이 왕에게 알려지리라. 그런즉 이제 오라, 우리가 함께 의논하자, 하였더라. And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
8 그때에 내가 그에게 사람을 보내어 이르기를, 네가 말하는 것 같은 그런 일들은 내가 행하지 아니하였으며 네가 네 마음에서 그것들을 꾸며 내느니라, 하였으니 Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
9 이는 그들이 다 우리를 두렵게 하며 이르기를, 그들의 손이 약하게 되어 그 일을 그치고 그것을 이루지 못하리라, 하였기 때문이라. 그런즉, 오 하나님이여, 이제 내 손을 강하게 하옵소서. For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
10 그 뒤에 므헤다벨의 손자요, 들라야의 아들인 스마야가 갇혔기에 내가 그의 집에 가매 그가 이르기를, 그들이 너를 죽이러 올 터이니 우리가 하나님의 집에서 성전 안에서 함께 만나고 성전의 문들을 닫자. 참으로 그들이 밤에 와서 너를 죽이리라, 하기에 Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.
11 내가 이르기를, 나 같은 자가 도망하리요? 나 같은 자로서 성전에 들어가 자기 생명을 구하고자 하는 자가 누구이리요? 나는 들어가지 아니하리라, 하였느니라. And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.
12 보라, 내가 깨달은즉 하나님께서 그를 보내지 아니하셨으며 다만 도비야와 산발랏이 그를 고용하였으므로 그가 나를 향해 이런 대언을 선포하였더라. And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
13 그러므로 그들이 그를 고용한 목적은 나를 두렵게 하고 그렇게 하여 죄를 짓게 하며 또 악한 소문을 내려고 일을 만들어 나를 모욕하려 함이었더라. Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14 내 하나님이여, 도비야와 산발랏과 여대언자 노아댜와 대언자들 중 남은 자들이 나를 두렵게 하고자 하였으니 그들의 이 소행대로 그들을 기억하옵소서. My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
15 ¶이처럼 성벽이 오십이 일 만에 엘룰 월 이십오일에 완성되매 So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.
16 우리의 모든 원수들이 그것을 듣고 또 우리 주변의 모든 이교도들이 이 일들을 보고는 자기들의 눈으로 보는 것으로 인해 크게 낙담하였으니 이는 우리 하나님께서 이 일을 이루신 것을 그들이 깨달았기 때문이더라. And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
17 ¶또한 그 당시에 유다의 고귀한 자들이 도비야에게 많은 편지를 보냈고 도비야의 편지도 그들에게 이르렀으니 Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.
18 이는 그가 아라의 아들 스가냐의 사위가 되었고 그의 아들 여호하난이 베레기야의 아들 므술람의 딸을 취하였으므로 유다에서 그에게 맹세한 자들이 많았기 때문이더라. For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
19 또한 그들이 그의 선한 행실을 내 앞에서 보고하고 또 내 말도 그에게 전하니 도비야가 편지를 보내어 나를 두렵게 하고자 하였더라. Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
