1	야곱이 장가들다 야곱이 길을 떠나 동방 사람들이 사는 땅으로 가서	Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.
2	보니, 들에 우물이 있고 그 곁에는 양들이 세 무리로 엎드려 있었다. 사람들이 우물에서 물을 길어 양떼에게 먹이고 있었는데 그 우물에는 큰 돌뚜껑이 덮여 있었다.	And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well’s mouth.
3	그 돌뚜껑은 양떼가 다 모이면 우물에서 굴려냈다가 양떼에게 물을 먹이고 나서는 다시 제자리에 덮어두는 것이었다.	And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well’s mouth in his place.
4	야곱이 거기에 있는 사람들에게 물었다. "여보십시오. 당신들은 어디에서 오신 분들입니까?" 그들이 대답하였다. "우리는 하란에서 왔습니다."	And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.
5	그가 물었다. "그러면 나홀의 아들 라반을 아시겠군요?" 그들이 대답하였다. "알고 말고요."	And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him.
6	야곱은 그가 어떻게 지내느냐고 물었다. 그들이 대답하였다. "예, 잘들 지내십니다. 아, 저기 라반의 딸 라헬이 양떼를 몰고 오는군요." 이 말을 듣고	And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.
7	야곱이 말하였다. "아직 대낮이 아닙니까? 가축을 모아들일 시간도 아닌데, 왜 양떼에게 물을 먹여가지고 가서 풀을 뜯기지 않습니까?"	And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.
8	그들이 대답하였다. "양떼가 다 모여들기 전에는 안 됩니다. 다 모인 다음에야 이 우물에서 돌뚜껑을 굴려내고 양들에게 물을 먹이게 되어 있습니다."	And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.
9	야곱이 그들과 말을 주고받고 있을 때 목동 라헬이 아버지의 양떼를 몰고 왔다.	And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep: for she kept them.
10	야곱은 외삼촌 라반의 딸 라헬과 외삼촌 라반의 양떼를 보자 선뜻 나서서 우물에서 돌뚜껑을 굴려내고 외삼촌 라반의 양들에게 물을 먹였다.	And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.
11	그는 라헬에게 입맞추고 소리 내어 울었다.	And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.
12	그리고 라헬의 아버지가 자기의 외삼촌이며 자기 어머니가 리브가라고 말하자 라헬은 아버지에게 달려가서 이 말을 전하였다.	And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s brother, and that he was Rebekah’s son: and she ran and told her father.
13	라반은 친누이의 몸에서 난 조카 야곱이 왔다는 소식을 듣고 뛰어가서 만나 그를 껴안고 입을 맞추고는 집으로 데리고 갔다. 야곱이 그 동안에 겪은 이야기를 들려주자,	And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister’s son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.
14	라반은 "너야말로 내 골육임에 틀림없다." 하고 말하였다. 이리하여 야곱은 그 집에서 한 달 동안 머물러 있었다.	And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.
15	하루는 라반이 야곱에게 물었다. "네가 내 골육이라고 해서 내 일을 거저 해서야 되겠느냐? 품삯을 얼마나 주면 좋겠는지 말해 보아라."	And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?
16	그런데 라반에게는 딸이 둘 있었다. 큰딸은 레아요, 작은딸은 라헬이었다.	And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.
17	레아는 눈매가 부드러웠지만, 라헬은 몸매도 아름답고 용모도 예뻐서	Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.
18	야곱은 라헬을 더 좋아하였다. 그래서 그는 칠 년 동안 외삼촌 일을 해드릴 터이니 작은 따님 라헬을 달라고 청하였다.	And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.
19	라반은 "다른 사람에게 주느니보다 너에게 주는 편이 낫겠다." 하면서 같이 살자고 하였다.	And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.
20	그로부터 야곱은 라헬에게 장가들 생각으로 일을 했다. 칠 년이라는 세월도 며칠밖에 안 되듯 지나갔다. 그만큼 그는 라헬을 좋아했던 것이다.	And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
21	마침내 야곱은 라반에게 기한이 다 찼으니 라헬을 아내로 맞아 같이 살게 해달라고 요구했다.	And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.
22	그래서 라반은 그 고장에 사는 사람들을 모두 청해 놓고 잔치를 베풀었다.	And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.
23	밤이 되어 라반은 딸 레아를 야곱에게 데려다 주었다. 그것도 모르고 야곱은 그와 한자리에 들었다.	And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.
24	이 때 라반은 딸 레아에게 자기의 계집종 질바를 몸종으로 주어 거느리게 하였다.	And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid.
25	아침이 되어 야곱이 눈을 떠보니 어이없게도 그것은 레아였다. 야곱은 라반에게 항의하였다. "삼촌이 저에게 이러실 수가 있습니까? 저는 라헬에게 장가들려고 삼촌 일을 해드린 것이 아닙니까? 왜 저를 속이시는 것입니까?"	And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?
26	라반은 "우리 고장에서는 작은딸을 큰딸보다 먼저 시집 보내는 법이 없네." 하며 부탁하였다.	And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.
27	"초례 기간 한 주일만 채우면 작은딸도 주지. 그 대신 또 칠 년 동안 내 일을 해주어야 하네."	Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.
28	야곱은 그 말대로 한 주일을 채웠다. 그제야 라반은 야곱에게 딸 라헬을 아내로 주었다.	And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.
29	라반은 딸 라헬에게 자기 계집종 빌하를 몸종으로 주어 거느리게 하였다.	And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.
30	야곱은 라헬과도 한자리에 들었다. 그는 라헬을 레아보다 더 사랑하였다. 그는 또 칠 년 동안을 라반의 집에서 일해야 했다.	And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.
31	야곱에게 자녀가 생기다 야훼께서는 레아가 남편에게 차별 대우를 받는 것을 보시고 그의 태를 열어주셨다. 그러나 라헬은 아기를 잉태하지 못하였다.	And when the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.
32	레아는 마침내 임신하여 아기를 낳았다. 그리고는 "야훼께서 나의 억울한 심정을 살펴주셨구나. 이제는 남편이 나를 사랑해 주겠지." 하면서 아기 이름을 르우벤이라 불렀다.	And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the Lord hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.
33	레아는 또 임신하여 아기를 낳았다. 그리고는 "내가 차별 대우를 받아 하소연하는 소리를 들으시고 야훼께서 나에게 또 아들을 주셨구나." 하면서 아기 이름을 시므온이라 불렀다.	And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the Lord hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.
34	그는 또 임신하여 아들을 낳았다. 그리고는 "이렇게 아들을 셋이나 낳아드렸으니 이제는 남편이 별수없이 나한테 매이겠지." 하면서 아기 이름을 레위라 불렀다.	And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.
35	그는 또 임신하여 아들을 낳았다. 그리고는 "이제야말로 내가 야훼를 찬양하리라." 하면서 아기 이름을 유다라 불렀다. 그 뒤 얼마 동안 레아는 아기를 낳지 못했다.	And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.
