1	엘리야가 호렙 산으로 들어가다 아합은 엘리야가 어떤 일을 했는지, 어떻게 예언자들을 칼로 쳐죽였는지를 낱낱이 이세벨에게 말해 주었다.	And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.
2	이세벨은 엘리야에게 전갈을 보내었다. "네가 예언자들을 죽였으니 이번에는 내가 너를 내일 이맘때까지 반드시 죽이리라. 그렇지 아니하면 천벌 아니라 그 이상이라도 내가 받으리라."	Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.
3	엘리야는 두려워 떨며 목숨을 구하여 급히 도망쳤다. 그는 유다 브엘세바에 이르러 그 곳에 시종을 남겨두고	And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer–sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.
4	자기는 하룻길을 더 여행하여 거친 들로 나갔다. 싸리나무 덤불이 있는 곳에 이르러 그 아래 앉은 그는 죽여달라고 기도하였다. "오, 야훼여, 이제 다 끝났습니다. 저의 목숨을 거두어주십시오. 선조들보다 나을 것 없는 못난 놈입니다."	But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
5	그리고 나서 엘리야는 싸리나무 덤불 아래 그대로 누워 잠들었다. 그 때 하늘의 천사가 나타나 흔들어 깨우면서 "일어나서 먹어라." 하고 말하였다.	And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.
6	엘리야가 깨어보니 머리맡에, 불에 달군 돌에 구워낸 과자와 물 한 병이 놓여 있었다. 그는 음식을 먹고 또 물도 마셨다. 그리고는 다시 누워 잠이 들었다.	And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
7	야훼의 천사가 다시 와서 그를 흔들어 깨우면서 "갈 길이 고될 터이니 일어나서 먹어라." 하고 말하였다.	And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
8	엘리야는 일어나서 먹고 마셨다. 그는 음식을 먹고 힘을 얻어 사십 일을 밤낮으로 걸어 하느님의 산 호렙에 이르렀다.	And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
9	엘리야가 하느님을 만나다 그가 거기 한 동굴에 이르러 그 속에서 그 날 밤을 지내는데 갑자기 야훼의 말씀이 들려왔다. "엘리야야, 네가 여기에서 무엇을 하고 있느냐?"	And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
10	엘리야가 대답하였다. "저는 이스라엘 백성들이 당신과 맺은 계약을 저버리는 것을 보고 만군의 하느님 야훼를 생각하여 가슴에 불이 붙고 있습니다. 이 백성은 당신의 제단을 헐었을 뿐 아니라 당신의 예언자들을 칼로 쳐죽였습니다. 이제 예언자라고는 저 하나 남았는데 그들이 저마저 죽이려고 찾고 있습니다."	And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11	다시 음성이 들려왔다. "앞으로 나가서 야훼 앞에 있는 산 위에 서 있거라." 그리고 야훼께서 지나가시는데 크고 강한 바람 한 줄기가 일어 산을 뒤흔들고 야훼 앞에 있는 바위를 산산조각 내었다. 그러나 야훼께서는 바람 가운데 계시지 않았다. 바람이 지나간 다음에 지진이 일어났다. 그러나 야훼께서는 지진 가운데도 계시지 않았다.	And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
12	지진 다음에 불이 일어났다. 그러나 야훼께서는 불길 가운데도 계시지 않았다. 불길이 지나간 다음, 조용하고 여린 소리가 들려왔다.	And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
13	엘리야는 목소리를 듣고 겉옷자락으로 얼굴을 가리우고 동굴 어귀로 나와 섰다. 그러자 그에게 한 소리가 들려왔다. "엘리야야, 네가 여기에서 무엇을 하고 있느냐?"	And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?
14	엘리야가 대답하였다. "저는 이스라엘 백성들이 당신과 맺은 계약을 저버리는 것을 보고 만군의 하느님 야훼를 생각하여 가슴에 불이 붙고 있습니다. 이 백성은 당신의 제단을 헐었을 뿐 아니라 당신의 예언자들을 칼로 쳐죽였습니다. 이제 예언자라고는 저 하나 남았는데 그들이 저마저 죽이려고 찾고 있습니다." 15	야훼께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. "다마스쿠스 광야로 해서 돌아가거라. 다마스쿠스 성에 들어가거든 하자엘을 기름 부어 시리아의 왕으로 세우고	And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
16	님시의 아들 예후를 기름 부어 이스라엘의 왕으로 세워라. 그리고 아벨므홀라 출신 사밧의 아들 엘리사를 기름 부어 네 뒤를 이을 예언자로 세워라.	And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel–meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.
17	하자엘의 칼을 피하여 살아난 자는 예후에게 죽을 것이고 예후의 칼을 피한 자는 엘리사에게 죽으리라.	And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.
18	그러나 내가 이스라엘 백성 가운데서 바알에게 무릎을 꿇지도, 입맞추지도 않았던 칠천 명을 남겨두리라."	Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.
19	엘리야가 엘리사를 부르다 엘리야는 그 곳을 떠나 길을 가다가 사밧의 아들 엘리사를 만났다. 그는 황소 열두 쌍에 겨리를 지워 밭을 갈고 있었는데 자신은 열두째 겨리를 부리고 있었다. 엘리야가 그 옆을 지나가면서 자기의 겉옷을 그에게 걸쳐주었다.	So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.
20	그러자 엘리사는 소를 그냥 두고 엘리야에게 달려왔다. 그리고 이렇게 말하였다. "부모님께 작별 인사를 한 후에 당신을 따라가겠습니다. 허락하여 주십시오." 그러자 엘리야가 말하였다. "어서 가보게. 내가 어찌 작별 인사를 금하겠는가?"	And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?
21	엘리사는 엘리야를 떠나 집으로 돌아가서 황소 두 마리를 잡고 쟁기를 부수어 그 고기를 구워 사람들을 대접하였다. 그리고 나서 엘리사는 엘리야를 따라 나서 그의 제자가 되었다.	And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
