1	에브라임 사람들이 기드온에게 말하였다. "당신은 미디안과 싸우러 나가면서 우리를 부르지 않았으니 어찌 이럴 수 있소?" 이렇게 기드온에게 엄중한 항의를 하자	And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.
2	그가 대답하였다. "이번에 내가 한 일을 여러분이 한 일과 어찌 비기겠습니까? 에브라임의 주운 이삭이 아비에젤의 수확 전부보다 낫지 않습니까?	And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi–ezer?
3	하느님께서 미디안 추장 오렙과 즈엡을 여러분들 손에 부치시지 않았습니까? 그러니 내가 한 일이 어찌 여러분이 한 일만큼 클 수 있겠습니까?" 이 말을 듣고서야 그들은 노기가 풀렸다.	God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.
4	기드온이 미디안을 요르단 강 동쪽에서 섬멸하다 기드온이 요르단에 이르렀다. 그와 그가 거느린 삼백 명은 지친 몸으로 강을 건너 추격을 계속하였다.	And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.
5	그는 수꼿에 이르러 그 곳 사람들에게 청하였다. "나를 따르는 이 군인들이 지쳤소. 먹을 것을 좀 주시오. 나는 미디안의 두 왕 제바와 살문나를 추격하는 중이오."	And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.
6	수꼿의 추장들이 대답하였다. "당신 군대에게 빵을 주다니, 당신이 지금 제바와 살문나의 손목이라도 잘라 가졌다는 말이오?"	And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?
7	기드온은 "좋소. 야훼께서 제바와 살문나를 내 손에 부치시는 날, 들가시와 찔레로 당신들의 살덩이를 찢어버리겠소." 하고는	And Gideon said, Therefore when the Lord hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.
8	브누엘로 올라가 그 곳 사람들에게 같은 청을 해보았지만 브누엘 사람들도 수꼿 사람들과 같은 대답이었다.	And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.
9	그는 브누엘 사람들에게도 자기가 승리하고 돌아올 때 성의 망대를 헐어버리리라고 하였다.	And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.
10	한편 동방 백성의 전군은 전사자 십이만 명을 내고 만 오천 명이 겨우 살아 남아 제바와 살문나와 함께 카르콜에 진을 치고는	Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
11	겨우 안도의 한숨을 돌리는데, 기드온은 노바와 욕브하 동편으로 목동들의 길을 따라 올라가다가 적진을 들이쳤다.	And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure.
12	제바와 살문나는 또 도망을 쳤지만, 기드온은 뒤쫓아가서 마침내 미디안 두 왕 제바와 살문나를 사로잡고 그 군대를 섬멸하였다.	And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.
13	요아스의 아들 기드온은 싸움을 끝내고 헤레스 고개를 넘어 돌아오다가	And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,
14	수꼿 젊은이 하나를 잡아 수꼿 추장과 장로들의 이름을 대라고 하였다. 그는 그들 칠십칠 명의 이름을 적어주었다.	And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.
15	기드온은 수꼿에 이르러 그 곳 사람들에게 일렀다. "제바와 살문나를 보아라. 너희는 제바와 살문나의 손목이라도 잘라 가졌느냐고 하면서 우리 기진맥진한 군대에게 먹을 것을 주지 못하겠다고 하였다. 그러면서 나를 우롱하였다."	And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?
16	기드온은 그 성읍의 장로들을 체포한 다음, 들가시와 찔레를 베어다가 수꼿 사람들을 찢어버렸다.	And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.
17	또 브누엘 성의 망대를 헐어버리고 그 성읍 사람들을 죽였다.	And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.
18	그런 다음 그는 제바와 살문나에게 물었다. "너희가 다볼에서 죽인 사람들은 어떻게 생겼더냐?" 그들이 대답하였다. "당신같이 생겼습니다. 모두가 왕자다운 귀골을 타고 났더군요."	Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.
19	기드온이 말하였다. "그들은 한 어머니에게서 난 내 형제들이다. 너희가 그들을 죽이지 않았더라면, 나 또한 절대로 너희의 목숨을 건드리지 않을 것이다."	And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the Lord liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.
20	그는 맏아들 예델에게 일어나 그들을 죽이라고 명하였다. 그러나 그 소년은 아직 어린이였으므로 끔찍한 생각이 들어 칼을 뽑지 못하였다.	And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
21	그것을 보고 제바와 살문나가 말하였다. "사내 대장부답게 네가 일어나 우리를 쳐라." 이 말을 듣고 기드온은 일어나 제바와 살문나를 쳐죽이고 그들이 타던 낙타의 목에서 목걸이를 떼어가졌다.	Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.
22	기드온의 만년 이스라엘 사람들이 기드온에게 청하였다. "당신이 우리를 미디안 사람들의 손에서 구원해 내셨으니 당신과 당신의 자자손손이 우리를 다스려주십시오."	Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.
23	기드온은 "내가 그대들을 다스릴 것도 아니요, 내 자손이 그대들을 다스릴 것도 아닙니다." 하며 그들의 청을 거절하였다. "그대들을 다스리실 분은 야훼시오."	And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.
24	기드온은 말을 계속하였다. "그대들에게 한 가지 청할 것이 있소. 각자 전리품 가운데서 고리 하나씩을 내놓으시오." 적군은 이스마엘 사람이었기 때문에 금고리가 있었던 것이다.	And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)
25	"드리고 말고요." 하면서 사람들은 저마다 전리품 가운데서 고리 하나씩을 기드온이 펴놓은 겉옷 위에 던졌다.	And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
26	그의 요청대로 들어온 고리의 무게는 금 천칠백 세겔이나 되었다. 그 밖에도 목걸이뿐 아니라 여러 가지 고리가 있었고 미디안 왕들이 입던 붉은 옷과 낙타 목에 두르는 사슬도 있었다.	And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’ necks.
27	이 모든 것으로 기드온은 에봇 하나를 만들어 자기가 사는 성읍 오브라에 두었는데, 온 이스라엘이 그 에봇을 섬기며 음란을 피웠다. 그것이 기드온과 그 집안에 올가미가 되었다.	And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.
28	이와 같이 하여 미디안은 이스라엘 사람 앞에서 기세가 꺾여 다시는 고개를 들지 못하게 되었다. 기드온 생전 사십 년 동안 세상은 평온하였다.	Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.
29	요아스의 아들 여룹바알은 자기 집에 돌아가 살았다.	And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.
30	기드온은 아내가 많아 친아들이 칠십 명이나 되었다.	And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.
31	세겜에 그의 소실이 하나 살고 있었다. 그도 기드온에게 아들을 하나 낳아주었는데, 그는 그 아이의 이름을 아비멜렉이라고 불렀다.	And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.
32	요아스의 아들 기드온은 수를 다 누리고 죽어 아비에젤의 성 오브라에 있는 그의 아비 요아스의 무덤에 묻혔다.	And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi–ezrites.
33	기드온이 죽은 다음 이스라엘 백성은 다시 바알들을 따라 음란을 피우며 바알브릿을 자기네 신으로 삼았다.	And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal–berith their god.
34	이스라엘 백성은 주위의 모든 원수들의 손에서 저희를 건져내신 저희 하느님 야훼를 기억하지 않았다.	And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
35	여룹바알이라고도 하는 기드온의 집안이 그렇게도 많은 은덕을 입혀주었는데도 이스라엘은 그 은혜를 저버렸던 것이다.	Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
