1	베냐민 전쟁 그리하여 단으로부터 브엘세바에 이르는 지방과, 길르앗 지방에서 온 이스라엘 백성이 떨쳐 나왔다. 전체 회중은 미스바에 올라가 야훼 앞에 일제히 모였다.	Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beer–sheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the Lord in Mizpeh.
2	이스라엘 전군의 지휘관들은 이스라엘 각 지파를 거느리고 하느님의 군대를 이루어가지고 나섰다. 이렇게 칼을 차고 나선 보병이 사십 만이나 되었다.	And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.
3	베냐민 사람들은 이스라엘 백성이 미스바에 올라가 모였다는 소식을 들었다. 그 때 이스라엘 백성들은 그런 나쁜 일이 어떻게 일어났는지 말하라고 하였다.	(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?
4	살해된 여인의 남편인 그 레위인이 대답하였다. "나는 첩을 데리고 베냐민 지파에 속한 기브아에 간 일이 있습니다. 거기에서 하룻밤 묵으려고 했는데	And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.
5	기브아의 어른이라는 것들이 일어나 내가 묵고 있던 집을 에워싸고 나를 죽이려 하였습니다. 그랬다가 내 첩을 욕보여 죽게 했던 것입니다.	And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead.
6	나는 내 첩의 시체를 가져다가 토막을 내어 우리가 상속받은 이스라엘의 전 지역에 보냈습니다. 그들이 이스라엘에서 얼마나 더럽고 얼마나 고약한 짓을 했는지 알리려는 것이었습니다.	And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.
7	이스라엘 겨레여, 여러분이 이렇게 다 모이셨으니 이 사건을 어떻게 처리할지 지금 당장 결정을 내려주시기 바랍니다."	Behold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.
8	전군이 일제히 일어나 외쳤다. "우리는 아무도 자기 천막에 돌아가지 못한다. 아무도 자기 집으로 돌아가지 못한다.	And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.
9	이제 기브아 놈들에게 이렇게 하자. 제비를 뽑는데	But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it;
10	이스라엘 각 지파에서 백 명마다 열 사람을 뽑고 천 명마다 백 명을, 만 명마다 천 명을 뽑아 군량미를 모으자. 베냐민 지파에 속한 기브아 놈들이 이스라엘에서 저지른 이 고약한 일을 보복하러 올라갈 사람들의 양식을 모으자."	And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.
11	그리하여 이스라엘 사람은 모두 뜻을 모아 그 성을 치려고 모였다.	So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.
12	그리고 나서 이스라엘 지파들은 베냐민 온 지파에 전갈을 보내었다. "너희가 이렇게 끔찍한 일을 저지르다니, 어찌 이럴 수가 있느냐?	And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?
13	이제 기브아에 있는 그 무뢰배들을 내놓아라. 그 녀석들을 사형에 처하여 이스라엘 가운데서 악을 뿌리뽑아야겠다." 그러나 베냐민 사람들은 동족 이스라엘 사람들의 말을 들으려 하지 않았다.	Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:
14	베냐민 사람들은 이스라엘 사람들과 싸우려고 살던 성읍들을 떠나 기브아에 집결하였다.	But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.
15	그 날 여러 성읍에서 모여온 베냐민 사람들을 점호해 보니, 기브아 주민말고도 칼 찬 군인이 이만 육천 명이나 되었다.	And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men.
16	그 군대에는 왼손잡이 정예부대 칠백 명이 있었는데 그들은 머리카락 하나 빗나가지 않게 맞히는 돌팔매질의 명수였다.	Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.
17	이스라엘 사람도 점호를 하니, 베냐민 지파를 빼고 칼을 찬 군인이 사십 만이나 되었다.	And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.
18	그들은 길을 떠나 베델에 올라가 하느님께 물었다. "우리 이스라엘 사람들 가운데서 누가 먼저 나가 베냐민 군을 칠까요?" 야훼께서 대답하셨다. "유다가 앞장을 서라."	And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up first.
19	아침이 되어 이스라엘 군은 출동하여 기브아를 마주보고 진을 쳤다.	And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.
20	그들은 베냐민과 싸우려고 출동하여 기브아를 마주보고 대오를 정리하였는데,	And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah.
21	베냐민 군은 기브아에서 나와 이스라엘 군을 쳤다. 그 날 전사한 이스라엘 군은 이만 이천 명이나 되었다.	And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.
22	이스라엘 군은 다시 용기를 내어 전날과 같은 지점에서 전투 대열을 벌였다.	And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day.
23	이스라엘 사람들은 야훼께 나가 저녁이 되도록 그 앞에서 통곡하며 다시 물어보았다. "우리가 우리 동족인 베냐민 사람들과 한번 더 싸워야 합니까?" 야훼께서 대답하셨다. "쳐 올라가거라."	(And the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until even, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the Lord said, Go up against him.)
24	둘째 날도 이스라엘 군은 베냐민 군에 접근해 갔다.	And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.
25	그런데 그 날도 베냐민은 기브아에서 마주 쳐 나와 다시 이스라엘 군 만 팔천 명을 쳐죽였다. 이 때 죽은 사람들은 모두 칼을 쓰는 군인들이었다.	And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.
26	이스라엘 백성과 전군은 베델로 일제히 올라가 야훼 앞에 앉아 통곡하며 저녁때가 되도록 온종일 단식하고 야훼께 번제와 친교제를 올리고	Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the Lord, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.
27	야훼께 여쭈었다. 그 때에 하느님의 계약궤는 거기 있었고	And the children of Israel enquired of the Lord, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,
28	계약궤를 모시는 사제는 아론의 손자이자 엘르아잘의 아들인 비느하스였다. "우리가 다시 올라가 우리 동족인 베냐민 사람들을 쳐야 합니까? 아니면 이제 그만두어야 합니까?" 야훼께서 대답하셨다. "나가거라. 내일 내가 그들을 너희 손에 부치리라."	And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the Lord said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.
29	이스라엘은 기브아를 사면으로 돌아가며 복병을 배치하였다.	And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah.
30	사흘째 되는 날 이스라엘 군은 베냐민 군을 치러 올라가서 전과 마찬가지로 양쪽에 대열을 벌였다.	And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.
31	베냐민 군은 성을 비우고 그들을 맞아 싸우려고 나왔다. 전과 마찬가지로 그들은 베델로 가는 길과 기브온으로 가는 길에서 이스라엘 군을 쳐죽이기 시작하여 그 벌에서 삼십 명 가량 죽였다.	And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
32	베냐민 군은 이스라엘 군이 먼저처럼 도망칠 것이라고 생각하였지만 이스라엘 군은 도망치는 체하여 적군을 성에서 큰길까지 유인해 내기로 작전을 세웠다.	And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.
33	한편 이스라엘 주력 부대는 있던 자리를 떠나 바알다말에서 전투 태세에 들어갔고 이스라엘 매복 부대는 기브아 주변에 숨어 있다가 그 곳에서 쏟아져 나왔다.	And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baal–tamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.
34	그 때 전 이스라엘 군에서 뽑힌 만 명 정예 부대가 기브아 정면에 나타났다. 싸움은 치열하였다. 베냐민 사람들은 자기들이 앞으로 얼마나 비참한 일을 당할지 까맣게 몰랐다.	And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.
35	야훼께서 이스라엘 눈앞에서 베냐민을 치셨다. 그 날 이스라엘 군은 칼 쓰는 베냐민 군 이만 오천백 명을 죽였다.	And the Lord smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.
36	베냐민 군은 자기네가 패하였음을 알았다. 이스라엘 군이 베냐민 군이 보는 데서 뒤로 물러선 것은 기브아 주변에 복병을 배치해 둔 것을 믿었기 때문이었다.	So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.
37	복병은 재빨리 기브아에 밀려 들어가 온 성 주민을 쳐죽였다.	And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.
38	이스라엘 군은 복병과 신호를 짜두었다. 그 성에서 연기가 치솟으면	Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.
39	싸우던 이스라엘 군은 발길을 돌리게 되어 있었다. 그것도 모르고 베냐민 군은 이스라엘 군인을 삼십 명 가량 죽이면서 이스라엘 군이 저번 전투 때처럼 도망치는 줄로만 알았던 것이다.	And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.
40	신호로 삼았던 대로 연기가 그 성에서 기둥처럼 오르기 시작하였다. 베냐민 군인들이 돌아다 보니, 온 성이 불길에 싸여 하늘로 올라가는 것이 아닌가!	But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.
41	때를 놓치지 않고 이스라엘 군이 돌아섰고, 베냐민 군인들은 자기들의 운명이 다한 줄 알고는 갈팡질팡하게 되었다.	And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.
42	그들은 이스라엘 군 앞에서 발길을 돌려 광야 쪽으로 빠져 나가려고 하였지만 벗어날 길이 없었다. 성에서 나온 부대도 한데 어울려 그들을 도륙하였다.	Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
43	그들은 베냐민 군을 포위하여 틈을 주지 않고 동쪽으로 기브아 맞은편에 이르기까지 추격하며 짓부수었다.	Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.
44	그 때에 쓰러진 베냐민 용사는 만 팔천 명이나 되었다.	And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.
45	남은 자들은 방향을 바꾸어 광야를 통과하여 림몬 바위 있는 데까지 도망쳤다. 그리로 가는 길에서도 이스라엘 군은 적을 오천 명이나 쳐죽이고 또 기돔까지 따라가며 남은 이천 명을 죽였다.	And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.
46	이렇게 해서 그 날 죽은 베냐민 전사자 총수는 이만 오천 명이었다. 그들은 모두 칼을 쓰는 용사들이었다.	So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.
47	그러나 육백 명은 광야를 통과하여 림몬 바위까지 도망쳐서 넉 달을 그 바위 있는 곳에 머물러 있었다.	But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.
48	이스라엘 군은 다시 베냐민의 민간인들에게로 돌아와서 그 성 사람과 짐승을 만나는 대로 칼로 쳐죽이고 하나도 남기지 않았다. 그리고 다른 성읍들에도 닥치는 대로 모조리 불을 놓았다.	And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
