1	사무엘이 하느님의 부르심을 받다 소년 사무엘은 엘리 밑에서 야훼를 섬기고 있었다. 그 때는 야훼께서 말씀도 자주 들려주시지 않았고 계시를 보여주시는 일도 드물었다.	And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
2	엘리는 이미 눈이 어두워 앞을 잘 보지 못했다. 하루는 그가 자기의 자리에 누워 있고	And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;
3	사무엘은 하느님의 궤가 있는 야훼의 성전에서 자고 있었는데, 하느님의 등불이 꺼지기 전에	And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
4	야훼께서 사무엘을 부르셨다. 사무엘은 "예." 하고 대답하면서	That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.
5	엘리에게 뛰어가 "부르셨습니까?" 하고 물었다. "나는 너를 부른 일이 없다. 가서 자거라." 엘리의 이 말을 듣고 사무엘은 돌아와 자리에 누웠는데	And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
6	야훼께서 다시 사무엘을 부르셨다. 사무엘이 일어나 엘리에게 가서 "부르셨습니까?" 하고 물으니, 엘리는 "사무엘아, 나는 너를 부른 일이 없다. 가서 자거라." 하고 대답하였다.	And the Lord called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
7	야훼께서 말씀으로 사무엘에게 나타나신 적이 없으셨고 사무엘은 아직 야훼를 알지 못했던 것이다.	Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him.
8	야훼께서 세 번째로 사무엘을 부르셨다. 그가 일어나 엘리에게 가서 "부르셨습니까?" 하고 물었다. 그제야 엘리는 야훼께서 소년 사무엘을 부르시는 줄 알아차리고	And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child.
9	사무엘에게 "가서 누워 있어라. 그리고 다시 부르는 소리가 나거든, 이렇게 대답하여라. '야훼여, 말씀하십시오. 종이 듣고 있습니다.'" 하고 일러주었다. 사무엘은 돌아와 자기 자리에 누워 있었다.	Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10	그러자 야훼께서 거기에 나타나 서시어 아까처럼 "사무엘아! 사무엘아!" 하고 부르셨다. 사무엘이 "야훼여, 말씀하십시오. 종이 듣고 있습니다." 하고 대답하자	And the Lord came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
11	야훼께서 사무엘에게 말씀하셨다. "들어라. 내가 이제 이스라엘에서 무슨 일을 할 터인데, 듣는 사람마다 가슴이 내려앉으리라.	And the Lord said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.
12	그 날이 오면, 내가 엘리와 그 집안을 두고 말한 일들이 처음부터 끝까지 이루어지리라.	In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
13	너에게 알려주거니와, 나는 엘리의 가문을 심판하여 끝내 벌하고야 말겠다. 그것은 제 자식들이 하느님을 모독하는 것을 알면서도 바로잡지 못했기 때문이다.	For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
14	그러므로 나는 엘리의 집안을 두고, 제물이나 예물을 소홀히 다룬 그 죄는 영영 용서해 주지 않으리라고 맹세하였다."	And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.
15	사무엘은 아침까지 누워 있다가 야훼의 성전 문들을 열었으나, 감히 밤에 보고 들은 것을 엘리에게 고하지 못하였다.	And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.
16	그러는데 엘리가 "얘, 사무엘아!" 하고 불렀다. 사무엘이 "예!" 하고 대답하자	Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.
17	엘리가 "무슨 말씀을 하시더냐? 나에게 숨기지 말고 말해 다오. 너에게 하신 말씀을 한마디라도 숨긴다면, 하느님께서는 너에게도 나에게 내리시는 벌 못지않은 큰 벌을 내리실 것이다." 하고 다그쳤다.	And he said, What is the thing that the Lord hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
18	그래서 사무엘은 숨김없이 다 털어놓았다. 그 말을 듣고 엘리는 중얼거렸다. "야훼께서 하시는 일, 어련하시랴!"	And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the Lord: let him do what seemeth him good.
19	사무엘이 자라는 동안 야훼께서 그와 함께 계시어, 그가 한 말은 모두 그대로 이루어지게 하셨다.	And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.
20	그리하여 단에서 브엘세바에 이르기까지 온 이스라엘이 사무엘을 야훼께서 세우신 예언자로 받들게 되었다.	And all Israel from Dan even to Beer–sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord.
21	야훼께서는 실로에서 당신을 거듭 나타내 보이셨다. 야훼께서는 그 곳에서 사무엘에게 나타내 보이셨던 것이다.	And the Lord appeared again in Shiloh: for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord.
