1	바위에서 물이 터져 나오다 정월이 되어 이스라엘 백성 온 회중은 씬 광야에 이르러 카데스에 자리를 잡았다. 거기에서 미리암이 죽어 땅에 묻혔다.	Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
2	거기에는 먹을 물이 없었다. 백성들이 모세와 아론에게 몰려와서	And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
3	따졌다. "우리 겨레가 야훼 앞에서 죽을 때 우리도 함께 죽지 못한 것이 한이다.	And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the Lord!
4	너희는 어찌하여 야훼의 회중을 이 광야로 끌어내어 우리와 우리 가축이 함께 죽게 하느냐?	And why have ye brought up the congregation of the Lord into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?
5	어쩌자고 우리를 이집트에서 데리고 나와 이 못된 고장으로 이끌었느냐? 어찌하여 우리를 곡식도 무화과도 포도도 석류도 자라지 않고 마실 물도 없는 이 곳으로 끌어내었느냐?"	And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.
6	모세와 아론이 회중을 떠나 만남의 장막 문에 이르러 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드리자 야훼의 영광이 그들에게 나타났다.	And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto them.
7	야훼께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다.	And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
8	"너는 지팡이를 가지고 회중을 불러모아라. 그리고 형 아론과 함께 모든 사람이 보는 앞에서 이 바위에게 물을 내라고 명령하여라. 그리하면 네가 이 바위에서 터져 나오는 물로 회중과 가축을 먹일 수 있으리라."	Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
9	모세는 분부대로 야훼 앞에 있는 지팡이를 집어 들었다.	And Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as he commanded him.
10	모세는 아론과 함께 그 바위 앞에 회중을 불러 모아놓고 외쳤다. "반역자들아, 들어라. 이 바위에서 물이 터져 나오게 해주랴?"	And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?
11	그리고 나서 모세가 손을 들어 지팡이로 그 바위를 두 번 치니 물이 콸콸 터져 나왔다. 회중과 가축이 그 물을 마셨다.	And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
12	그러나 야훼께서는 모세와 아론을 꾸중하셨다. "너희는 나를 믿지 못하여 이스라엘 백성 앞에서 내 영광을 드러내지 못하였다. 그러므로 너희는 내가 이 회중에게 줄 땅으로 그들을 인도하여 들이지 못하리라."	And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
13	그 샘물은 이스라엘 백성이 야훼와 다투었다고 해서 므리바 샘이라고 불리지만, 야훼께서 당신이 하느님이심을 드러내신 곳이기도 하다.	This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the Lord, and he was sanctified in them.
14	에돔이 길을 내주지 아니하다 그 곳 카데스에서 모세는 에돔 왕에게 전갈을 보냈다. "당신의 아우 이스라엘이오. 당신께서도 아시다시피 우리는 온갖 고초를 다 겪어왔습니다.	And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:
15	우리의 선조들은 이집트에 내려가 거기에서 오래 살면서 이집트인들에게 몹시 학대를 받았습니다.	How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:
16	그래서 야훼께 부르짖자, 야훼께서는 우리의 호소를 들으시고 천사를 보내시어 우리를 이집트에서 건져내셨습니다. 그리하여 우리는 마침내 당신의 지경 변두리에 있는 도시 카데스에 이르게 되었습니다.	And when we cried unto the Lord, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:
17	이제 우리가 당신의 땅을 지나가야 하겠으니 부디 허락해 주십시오. 밭이나 포도원에 들어가지도 않고 우물물도 마시지 않겠습니다. 우리는 당신의 국토를 다 지나갈 때까지 오른쪽으로도 왼쪽으로도 들어서지 아니하고 왕의 큰길로만 가겠습니다."	Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.
18	그러나 에돔 왕은 자기 땅을 지나가지 못한다고 거절하면서 만약 들어선다면 군대를 풀어 치겠다고 대답하였다.	And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.
19	이스라엘 백성이 다시 청하였다. "우리는 큰길로만 가겠습니다. 사람이나 가축이 물을 마셔야 할 경우에는 그 값을 반드시 드리리다. 걸어서 고이 지나가려는 것뿐입니다."	And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.
20	에돔 왕은 지나가지 못한다고 하며 무장한 많은 군대를 거느리고 그들을 치러 나왔다.	And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
21	에돔 왕이 그의 지경을 지나가지 못하게 거절하자 이스라엘은 발길을 돌리지 않을 수 없었다.	Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.
22	아론이 세상을 떠나다 이스라엘 백성 온 회중은 카데스를 떠나 호르 산에 이르렀다.	And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh, and came unto mount Hor.
23	에돔 땅 접경에 있는 호르 산에 이르렀을 때에 야훼께서 모세와 아론에게 이르셨다.	And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying,
24	"아론은 선조들에게로 돌아갈 때가 되었다. 너희가 므리바 샘에서 나의 명령을 어겼으므로 아론은 내가 이스라엘 백성에게 줄 땅에 들어가지 못하리라.	Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.
25	아론과 그의 아들 엘르아잘을 데리고 호르 산으로 올라가서	Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor:
26	아론의 옷을 벗겨 그의 아들 엘르아잘에게 입혀라. 아론은 거기에서 죽어 선조들에게로 돌아가야 한다."	And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.
27	모세는 야훼의 분부대로 온 회중이 보는 앞에서 호르 산으로 올라가	And Moses did as the Lord commanded: and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.
28	아론의 옷을 벗겨 그의 아들 엘르아잘에게 입혔다. 아론이 그 산꼭대기에서 죽자, 모세와 엘르아잘은 산에서 내려왔다.	And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.
29	이스라엘 온 집안은 아론이 세상을 떠난 것을 알고 삼십 일 동안 아론을 위하여 곡을 하였다.	And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
