1	광야에 나타난 세례자 요한 그 무렵에 세례자 요한이 나타나 유다 광야에서	In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
2	"회개하여라. 하늘 나라가 다가왔다!" 하고 선포하였다. 이 사람을 두고 예언자 이사야는 이렇게 말하였다.	And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3	"광야에서 외치는 이의 소리가 들린다. '너희는 주의 길을 닦고 그의 길을 고르게 하여라.'"	For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
4	요한은 낙타털 옷을 입고 허리에 가죽띠를 두르고 메뚜기와 들꿀을 먹으며 살았다.	And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
5	그 때에 예루살렘을 비롯하여 유다 각 지방과 요르단 강 부근의 사람들이 다 요르단 강으로 요한을 찾아가서	Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan,
6	자기 죄를 고백하며 세례를 받았다.	And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
7	그러나 많은 바리사이파 사람들과 사두가이파 사람들이 세례를 받으러 오는 것을 보고 요한은 이렇게 말하였다. "이 독사의 족속들아! 닥쳐올 그 징벌을 피하라고 누가 일러주더냐?	But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8	너희는 회개했다는 증거를 행실로써 보여라.	Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9	그리고 '아브라함이 우리 조상이다.' 하는 말은 아예 할 생각도 마라. 사실 하느님은 이 돌들로도 아브라함의 자녀를 만드실 수 있다.	And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10	도끼가 이미 나무 뿌리에 닿았으니 좋은 열매를 맺지 않은 나무는 다 찍혀 불 속에 던져질 것이다.	And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
11	나는 너희를 회개시키려고 물로 세례를 베풀거니와 내 뒤에 오시는 분은 성령과 불로 세례를 베푸실 것이다. 그분은 나보다 훌륭한 분이어서 나는 그분의 신발을 들고 다닐 자격조차 없는 사람이다.	I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
12	그분은 손에 키를 드시고 타작 마당의 곡식을 깨끗이 가려 알곡은 모아 곳간에 들이시고 쭉정이는 꺼지지 않는 불에 태우실 것이다." (; )	Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
13	세례를 받으신 예수 그 즈음에 예수께서 세례를 받으시려고 갈릴래아를 떠나 요르단 강으로 요한을 찾아오셨다.	Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
14	그러나 요한은 "제가 선생님께 세례를 받아야 할 터인데 어떻게 선생님께서 제게 오십니까?" 하며 굳이 사양하였다.	But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15	예수께서 요한에게 "지금은 내가 하자는 대로 하여라. 우리가 이렇게 해야 하느님께서 원하시는 모든 일이 이루어진다." 하고 대답하셨다. 그제야 요한은 예수께서 하자 하시는 대로 하였다.	And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16	예수께서 세례를 받으시고 물에서 올라오시자 홀연히 하늘이 열리고 하느님의 성령이 비둘기 모양으로 당신 위에 내려오시는 것이 보였다.	And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17	그 때 하늘에서 이런 소리가 들려왔다. "이는 내 사랑하는 아들, 내 마음에 드는 아들이다."	And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
