1	바빌론 왕궁에 등용된 히브리 젊은이들 유다 왕 여호야킴 제삼년에 바빌론 왕 느부갓네살이 쳐들어와 예루살렘을 포위한 일이 있었다.	In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2	주께서는 그에게 유다 왕 여호야킴을 끌어가고 하느님의 집 물건 얼마를 빼앗아가게 하셨다. 느부갓네살은 그 물건들을 시날 땅에 있는 자기 신전으로 가지고 가 그 곳 곳간에 넣어두었다.	And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3	느부갓네살 왕은 내시부 대신 아스브낫에게 명하여 이스라엘 사람 가운데서 왕족과 귀족들의 자제를 몇 명 뽑아 들이되,	And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
4	흠없이 잘 생기고 교육을 받아서 막히는 데가 없으며 무슨 일에나 능숙하고 사리에 밝아 왕궁에서 일할 만한 젊은이들을 뽑아 바빌론 말과 글을 가르치게 하였다.	Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5	또 왕은 그들에게 날마다 궁중 요리와 술을 주면서 앞으로 어전에서 일볼 수 있도록 삼 년 동안 훈련을 받게 하였다.	And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6	그들 가운데 유다인으로는 다니엘, 하나니야, 미사엘, 아자리야라는 젊은이들이 있었다.	Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
7	내시부 대신은 이 젊은이들에게 이름을 새로 지어주었다. 곧 다니엘은 벨트사살, 하나니야는 사드락, 미사엘은 메삭, 아자리야는 아벳느고라고 부르게 하였다.	Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed–nego.
8	그런데 다니엘은 궁중 요리와 술을 먹어 부정을 타서는 안 되겠다고 결심하고 내시부 대신에게 그런 일을 피하게 해달라고 청하였다.	But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9	하느님께서는 다니엘이 내시부 대신의 사랑과 귀염을 받게 해주셨다.	Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
10	내시부 대신은 다니엘에게 사정했다. "나는 왕께서 죽으라면 죽는 시늉이라도 해야 할 몸이다. 너희가 왕께서 정해 주신 음식을 먹지 않아, 얼굴이 너희 또래의 다른 젊은이들보다 못하게 보였다가는 내 목이 달아난다."	And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
11	그래서 다니엘은 내시부 대신의 지시대로 자기와 하나니야와 미사엘과 아자리야를 맡아 보살피는 감독관에게 청했다.	Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12	"소생들에게 열흘 동안만 시험삼아 야채와 물만 먹게 해주십시오.	Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13	그런 뒤에 궁중 요리를 먹는 다른 젊은이들과 우리 얼굴을 한번 비교해 보시고 나서 소생들을 나리 좋으실 대로 하십시오."	Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
14	그는 다니엘의 말대로 열흘 동안 두고 보았다.	So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15	열흘 뒤에 보니, 그들의 얼굴은 궁중 요리를 먹는 다른 젊은이들보다도 살이 올라 보기에 더 좋았다.	And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.
16	그래서 감독관은 그들에게 음식과 술 대신 야채를 주었다.	Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
17	이 네 젊은이는 하느님의 도우심으로 글공부를 잘해서 전문 지식을 갖추게 되었다. 그 중에서도 다니엘은 어떤 환상이든지 꿈이든지 다 풀 수 있는 재능을 받았다.	As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18	왕명으로 정해진 훈련 기간이 지나자 내시부 대신은 그 젊은이들을 느부갓네살 앞으로 데리고 나갔다.	Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19	젊은이들과 이야기해 보니 그 중에서 다니엘, 하나니야, 미사엘, 아자리야를 따를 만한 사람이 없어 왕은 그들로 하여금 왕궁에서 일을 보게 하였다.	And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
20	왕이 무슨 일을 물어보아도 그들은 온 나라 어느 마술사나 술객들보다도 열 배나 더 지혜롭고 슬기롭게 대답했다.	And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
21	다니엘은 고레스 왕 원년까지 왕궁에 머물러 있었다.	And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
