1	세례자 요한의 전도 로마 황제 티베리오가 다스린 지 십오 년째 되던 해에 본티오 빌라도가 유다 총독으로 있었다. 그리고 갈릴래아 지방의 영주는 헤로데였고 이두래아와 트라코니티스 지방의 영주는 헤로데의 동생 필립보였으며 아빌레네 지방의 영주는 리사니아였다.	Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
2	그리고 당시의 대사제는 안나스와 가야파였다. 바로 그 무렵에 즈가리야의 아들 요한은 광야에서 하느님의 말씀을 들었다.	Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
3	그리고는 요르단 강 부근의 모든 지방을 두루 다니며 "회개하고 세례를 받아라. 그러면 죄를 용서받을 것이다." 하고 선포하였다.	And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
4	이것은 예언자 이사야의 책에 기록된 말씀대로였다. "광야에서 외치는 이의 소리, '너희는 주의 길을 닦고 그의 길을 고르게 하여라.	As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
5	모든 골짜기는 메워지고 높은 산과 작은 언덕은 눕혀져 굽은 길이 곧아지며 험한 길이 고르게 되는 날,	Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
6	모든 사람이 하느님의 구원을 보리라.'"	And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
7	요한은 자기에게 세례를 받으러 나오는 사람들에게 이렇게 말하였다. "이 독사의 족속들아, 닥쳐올 징벌을 피하라고 누가 일러주더냐?	Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8	너희는 회개했다는 증거를 행실로 보여라. 그리고 '아브라함이 우리의 조상이다.' 하는 말은 아예 하지도 마라. 사실 하느님은 이 돌들로도 아브라함의 자녀를 만드실 수 있다.	Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
9	도끼가 이미 나무 뿌리에 닿았으니 좋은 열매를 맺지 않는 나무는 다 찍혀 불 속에 던져질 것이다."	And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
10	군중은 요한에게 "그러면 우리는 어떻게 해야 하겠습니까?" 하고 물었다.	And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
11	요한은 "속옷 두 벌을 가진 사람은 한 벌을 없는 사람에게 주고 먹을 것이 있는 사람도 이와 같이 남과 나누어 먹어야 한다." 하고 대답하였다.	He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
12	세리들도 와서 세례를 받고 "선생님, 우리는 어떻게 했으면 좋겠습니까?" 하고 물었다.	Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
13	요한은 "정한 대로만 받고 그 이상은 받아내지 마라." 하였다.	And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
14	군인들도 "저희는 또 어떻게 해야 합니까?" 하고 물었다. 요한은 "협박하거나 속임수를 써서 남의 물건을 착취하지 말고 자기가 받는 봉급으로 만족하여라." 하고 일러주었다.	And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
15	백성들은 그리스도를 기다리고 있던 터였으므로 요한을 보고 모두들 속으로 그가 혹시 그리스도가 아닐까 하고 생각하였다.	And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
16	그러나 요한은 모든 사람에게 이렇게 말하였다. "나는 너희에게 물로 세례를 베풀지만 이제 머지않아 성령과 불로 세례를 베푸실 분이 오신다. 그분은 나보다 더 훌륭한 분이어서 나는 그분의 신발끈을 풀어드릴 자격조차 없다.	John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
17	그분은 손에 키를 들고 타작 마당의 곡식을 깨끗이 가려 알곡은 모아 곳간에 들이고 쭉정이는 꺼지지 않는 불에 태우실 것이다."	Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
18	그 밖에도 요한은 사람들에게 여러 가지로 권하면서 복음을 선포하였다. (; )	And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
19	세례자 요한이 옥에 갇히다 그런데 영주 헤로데는 자기 동생의 아내 헤로디아를 처로 맞아들인 일과 그 밖의 온갖 잘못을 들어 자기를 책망했다고 하여	But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
20	요한을 감옥에 가두었다. 이리하여 헤로데는 악한 일 한 가지를 더하게 되었다. (; )	Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.
21	세례를 받으신 예수 사람들이 모두 세례를 받고 있을 때 예수께서도 세례를 받으시고 기도를 하고 계셨는데 홀연히 하늘이 열리며	Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
22	성령이 비둘기 형상으로 그에게 내려오셨다. 그리고 하늘에서는 "너는 내가 사랑하는 아들, 내 마음에 드는 아들이다." 하는 소리가 들려왔다. ()	And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
23	예수의 족보 예수께서는 서른 살 가량 되어 전도하기 시작하셨는데 사람들이 알기에는 그는 요셉의 아들이요, 요셉은 엘리의 아들이며,	And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
24	그 위로 거슬러 올라가면 마땃, 레위, 멜기, 얀나이, 요셉,	Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,
25	마따디아, 아모스, 나훔, 에슬리, 나깨,	Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge,
