1 Az álnok font útálatos az Úrnál; az igaz mérték pedig kedves néki. A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.
2 Kevélység jő: gyalázat jő; az alázatosoknál pedig bölcseség van. When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
3 Az igazakat tökéletességök vezeti; de a hitetleneket gonoszságuk elpusztítja. The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.
4 Nem használ a vagyon a haragnak idején; az igazság pedig kiragad a halálból. Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.
5 A tökéletesnek igazsága igazgatja az ő útát; de önnön istentelenségében esik el az istentelen. The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.
6 Az igazaknak igazságok megszabadítja őket; de az ő kivánságokban fogatnak meg a hitetlenek. The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.
7 Mikor meghal az istentelen ember, elvész az ő reménysége; a bűnösök várakozása is elvész. When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.
8 Az igaz a nyomorúságból megszabadul; az istentelen ő helyette beesik abba. The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.
9 Szájával rontja meg a képmutató felebarátját; de az igazak a tudomány által megszabadulnak. An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.
10 Az igazak javán örül a város; és mikor elvesznek az istentelenek, örvendezés van. When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.
11 Az igazaknak áldása által emelkedik a város; az istentelenek szája által pedig megromol. By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
12 Megútálja felebarátját a bolond; az eszes férfiú pedig hallgat. He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.
13 A rágalmazó megjelenti a titkot; de a hűséges lelkű elfedezi a dolgot. A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
14 A hol nincs vezetés, elvész a nép; a megmaradás pedig a sok tanácsos által van. Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
15 Teljességgel megrontatik, a ki kezes lesz idegenért; a ki pedig gyűlöli a kezességet, bátorságos lesz. He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.
16 A kedves asszony megtartja a tiszteletet, a hatalmaskodók pedig megtartják a gazdagságot. A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.
17 Ő magával tesz jól a kegyes férfiú; a kegyetlen pedig öntestének okoz fájdalmat. The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.
18 Az istentelen munkál álnok keresményt; az igazságszerzőnek pedig jutalma valóságos. The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.
19 A ki őszinte az igazságban, az életére -, a ki pedig a gonoszt követi, az vesztére míveli azt. As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.
20 Útálatosok az Úrnál az álnok szívűek; kedvesek pedig ő nála, a kik az ő útjokban tökéletesek. They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the Lord: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.
21 Kézadással erősítem, hogy nem marad büntetlen a gonosz; az igazaknak pedig magva megszabadul. Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.
22 Mint a disznó orrában az aranyperecz, olyan a szép asszony, a kinek nincs okossága. As a jewel of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.
23 Az igazaknak kivánsága csak jó, az istentelenek várakozása pedig harag. The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.
24 Van olyan, a ki bőven adakozik, és annál inkább gazdagodik; és a ki megtartóztatja a járandóságot, de ugyan szűkölködik. There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.
25 A mással jóltevő ember megkövéredik; és a ki mást felüdít, maga is üdül. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
26 A ki búzáját visszatartja, átkozza azt a nép; annak fején pedig, a ki eladja, áldás van. He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.
27 A ki jóra igyekezik, jóakaratot szerez: a ki pedig gonoszt keres, ő magára jő az. He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.
28 A ki bízik az ő gazdagságában, elesik; de mint a fa ága, az igazak kivirágoznak. He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.
29 A ki megháborítja az ő házát, annak öröksége szél lesz; és a bolond szolgája a bölcs elméjűnek. He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.
30 Az igaznak gyümölcse életnek fája; és lelkeket nyer meg a bölcs. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
31 Ímé, az igaz e földön megnyeri jutalmát; mennyivel inkább az istentelen és a bűnös! A ki szereti a dorgálást, szereti a tudományt; a ki pedig gyűlöli a fenyítéket, oktalan az. Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.
