| 1 | 我兄弟等よ、多人數教師と成る事勿れ、我等が一層厳しき審判を受くるは汝等の知る所にして、 | My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. |
| 2 | 我等は皆多くの事に就きて愆つものなればなり。人若言によりて愆つ事なくば是完全なる人にして、亦其全身を銜にて制むるを得べし。 | For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. |
| 3 | 夫馬を從へんとして、銜を其口に施せば、我等は其全身を馭す。 | Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. |
| 4 | 又船を看よ、假令其船大いにして強き風に襲わるるも、最小き舵によりて操る者の欲する所に向けらる、 | Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. |
| 5 | 斯の如く舌も小き局部ながら、其誇る所は大いなり。如何ばかりの小き火が、如何ばかりの大いなる林を焼くかを看よや。 | Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! |
| 6 | 舌も亦火なり、不義の世界なり。舌は我等が五體の中に備はりて全身を穢し、地獄の火を以て燃され、我等が一生の車輪を焼く。 | And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. |
| 7 | 蓋一切の獣、鳥、爬蟲、海に在る種族は制せられ、又實に人性によりて制せられたり。 | For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: |
| 8 | 然れども舌は一人も之を制する事能はず、定まりなき惡にして死毒に充てり。 | But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. |
| 9 | 我等は舌を以て父にて在す神を祝し奉り、又之を以て神に象りて造られたる人を詛ひ、 | Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. |
| 10 | 祝福と詛と同じ口より出づ。我兄弟等よ、是然あるべきに非ず、 | Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. |
| 11 | 豈同じ穴より水の甘きものと苦きものとを流す泉あらんや。 | Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? |
| 12 | 我兄弟等よ、如何ぞ無花果が葡萄を生じ、葡萄が無花果を生ずるを得んや。斯の如く塩水の泉も亦淡水を出すこと能はず。 | Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. |
| 13 | 汝等の中に智識ありて敏捷なる者ありや、其人は宜しく善き生活により、知識に出づる温和を以て行を示すべし。 | Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. |
| 14 | 然れど汝等若苦き妬を懐きて争ふ心あらば誇る事勿れ、眞理に反して僞る事勿れ。 | But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. |
| 15 | 是斯る知識は天より降れるものに非ずして地に属するもの、肉慾より出づるもの、惡魔より來るものなればなり。 | This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. |
| 16 | 蓋妬と争とある處には、亂と一切の惡業とあり。 | For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. |
| 17 | 上よりの知識は第一に操、次に穏便温和にして勧を容れ易く、（善に與し）矜恤と好果とに満ち、是非せず、表裏なきものなり。 | But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. |
| 18 | 義の果は平和を為せる人々に於て、平和の中に撒かるるなり。 | And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. |
