| 1 | 斯の如く、妻たる者も亦己が夫に服すべし、是夫が、假令御言を信ぜざるも、妻の行状によりて無言の裏に、 | Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; |
| 2 | 汝等の畏敬に在る操の行状を鑑みて儲けられん為なり。 | While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. |
| 3 | 其飾は表面の縮らし髪、金の飾環、身に着けたる衣服に在らずして、 | Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; |
| 4 | 心の中に隠れたる人、即ち貞淑、謹慎なる精神の變らざるに在るべし、是こそは神の御前に價高きものなれ。 | But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. |
| 5 | 蓋古代の聖女等も神を希望し奉りて、己が夫に服しつつ斯の如く身を飾りたりしが、 | For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: |
| 6 | 其如くサラは[其夫]アブラハムを主と呼びて之に從ひ居たり。汝等は彼が女として善を為し、何の變動をも懼れざるなり。 | Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. |
| 7 | 夫たる者よ、同じく知識に從ひて同居し、婦を我よりも弱き器として、而も相共に生命の恩寵を嗣ぐ者として、之を尊重し、汝等の祈を妨げられざる様にせよ。 | Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered. |
| 8 | 終に[言はん]、汝等皆心を同じうして相勞り、兄弟を愛し、慈悲謙遜にして、 | Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: |
| 9 | 惡を以て惡に報いず、罵を以て罵に報いず、却て祝福せよ。是世嗣として祝福を得ん為之に召されたる汝等なればなり。 | Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. |
| 10 | 蓋生命を愛して佳日を見んと欲する人は、其舌をして惡を避けしめ、其唇偽を語らず、 | For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: |
| 11 | 惡に遠ざかりて善を為し、平和を求めて之を追ふべきなり。 | Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. |
| 12 | 是主の御目は義人等の上を顧み、御耳は彼等の祈に傾き、御顔は惡を為す人々に怒り給へばなり。 | For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. |
| 13 | 抑汝等若善に熱心ならば、誰か汝等に害を為すべき。 | And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? |
| 14 | 又假令義の為に苦しめらるるも福なり、人々の威を懼れず、心を騒がさず、 | But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; |
| 15 | 心の中に主キリストを聖なるものとせよ。常に汝等に在る所の希望の所以に就きて、問ふ人毎に満足を與ふる準備あれよ、 | But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: |
| 16 | 但善き良心を有して柔和と畏敬とを以て答弁せよ。是キリストに於る汝等の善き振舞を讒言する人々の、其譏る所に就きて自ら耻ぢん為なり。 | Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. |
| 17 | 蓋神の思召ならば善を為して苦しむは惡を為して苦しむに優れり。 | For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing. |
| 18 | 即ちキリストも一度我等の罪の為に、即ち義人として不義者の為に死し給ひしが、是我等を神に献げ給はん為にして、肉にては殺され給ひしかど、霊にては活かされ給ひ、 | For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: |
| 19 | 其霊は獄に在りし霊に至りて救を宣傳へ給へり。 | By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; |
| 20 | 是等の者は、昔ノエの時代に神の忍耐の待ちをりしに、方舟の造らるる間服せざりし者なりしが、此方舟に於て水より救はれし者僅に八人なりき。 | Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. |
| 21 | 之に前表せられたる洗禮こそ今汝等をも救へるなれ。是肉身の穢を去る故に非ずして、イエズス、キリストの御復活によりて善き良心が神に為し奉る約束の故なり。 | The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: |
| 22 | 彼は（我等に永遠の生命を得しめん為に、死を亡ぼして）天に往き給ひ神の御右に在して天使、権勢、能力は之に服せしめられたるなり。 | Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. |
