| 1 | 神の僕にしてイエズス、キリストの使徒たるパウロ、共通の信仰によりて我實子たるチトに[書簡を贈る]。我が使徒たるは、神に選まれたる人々の信仰に應じ、又人を敬虔に導きて、 | Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; |
| 2 | 永遠の生命の希望を生ぜしむる眞理の知識に應ずる為なり。即ち僞り給はざる神は世々の以前より此希望を約し給ひしに、 | In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; |
| 3 | 時至りて御言を顕すに宣教を以てし給ひ、其宣教は我救主にて在す神の命によりて我に託せられたるなり。 | But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour; |
| 4 | 願はくは父にて在す神及び我救主キリスト、イエズスより恩寵と平安とを賜はらんことを。 | To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. |
| 5 | 我が汝をクレタ[島]に置きしは、尚缺けたる所を整へ、且我が汝に命ぜし如く町々に長老を立てしめん為なり、 | For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: |
| 6 | 即ち咎むべき所なく、一婦の夫にして、若子等あらば是も信徒にして、放蕩を以て訴へらるる事なく、順はざる事なき子等を有てる人たるべし。 | If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. |
| 7 | 蓋監督は、神の家宰として咎むべき所なき人たるべし。即ち自慢せず、短氣ならず、酒を嗜まず、人を打たず、耻づべき利を求めず、 | For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; |
| 8 | 旅人を接待し、善を好み、怜悧にして義人たり、信心家にして節制家たり、 | But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; |
| 9 | 教によれる眞の談を固く執り、健全なる教によりて人を勧むることを得、反對を稱ふる人に答弁をするを得る人たるべし。 | Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. |
| 10 | 蓋從はずして贅弁を弄し、以て人を惑はす者、殊に割禮の人々の中に多し。 | For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: |
| 11 | 彼等は耻づべき利の為に、教ふべからざる事を教へ、全家をも覆すが故に、彼等をして閉口せしむるを要す。 | Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake. |
| 12 | 彼等の中なる一人の預言者は言へり、「クレタ人は何時も虚言を吐きて、惡き獣、懶惰の腹なり」と。 | One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. |
| 13 | この證言は實なり、此故に汝、彼等をして信仰に健全ならしめん為に、鋭く之を譴責し、 | This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; |
| 14 | ユデア教の寓言と、身を眞理に反くる人々の戒とに憑る事なからしめよ。 | Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. |
| 15 | 潔き人々には、物皆潔けれども、穢れたる人、不信の人には潔き物なく、其理性と良心と共に穢れたり。 | Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. |
| 16 | 彼等は自ら神を識り奉れりと宣言すれども、行に於ては之を棄てて實に憎むべきもの、反抗するもの、一切の善業に就きての廃物なり。 | They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. |
