1 其頃、天下の戸籍を取調ぶべしとの詔、セザル、オグストより出しが、 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
2 此戸籍調は、シリノがシリアの総督たりし時に始めたるものなり。 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3 斯て人皆名を届けんとて、各其故郷に至りけるに、 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4 ヨゼフもダヴィド家に属し且其血統なれば、 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5 既に懐胎せる聘定の妻マリアと共に名を届けんとて、ガリレアのナザレト町よりユデアのベトレヘムと云へるダヴィドの町に上れり。 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6 其處に居りし程に、マリア産期満ちて、 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7 家子を生み、布に包みて馬槽に臥させ置きたり。是、旅舎に彼等の居る所なかりし故なり。 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 然るに此地方に牧者等ありて、夜中交代して己が群を守り居りしが、 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 折しも主の使其傍に立ちて、神の榮光彼等を環照らしたれば、彼等大いに懼れたり。 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 天使彼等に云ひけるは、懼るる事勿れ、其は我人民一般に及ぶべき大いなる喜の福音を汝等に告ぐればなり。 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 蓋今日ダヴィドの町に於て、汝等の為に救主生れ給へり、是主たるキリストなり。 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 汝等之を以て徴とせよ、即ち布にて包まれ、馬槽に置かれたる嬰兒を見るべし、と。 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 忽ち夥しき天軍天使に加はりて、神を賛美し、 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 「最高き處には神に光榮、地には御好意の人々に平安」と唱へたり。 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15 天使等天に去りて後、牧者等云ひけるは、将我等ベトレヘムまで行き、主の我等に示し給へる事の次第を見ん、と。 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16 乃ち急ぎ至りて、マリアとヨゼフと馬槽に置かれたる孩兒とに遇へり。 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17 然て面りに見て、此孩兒に就きて云はれし事を知らせければ、 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18 聞ける人皆牧者等より云はるる事を不思議に思ひしが、 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19 マリアは是等の事を悉く心に納めて考合せ居たり。 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
20 斯て牧者等は、己に云はれしに違はず、見聞せし一切の事に就きて、神に光榮を歸し、且賛美し奉りつつ歸れり。 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
21 孩兒の割禮を授かるべき八日目に至りて、未胎内に孕らざる前に天使より云はれし如く、名をイエズスと呼ばれ給へり。 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
22 然てモイゼの律法の儘に、マリアが潔の日數満ちて後、[兩親]孩兒を主に献げん為、携へてエルザレムに往けり。 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
23 是主の律法に録して「総て初に生るる男子は、主の為に聖なる者と稱へらるべし」とあるが故にして、 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
24 又主の律法に云はれたる如く、山鳩一雙か、鴿の雛二羽かを犠牲に献げん為なりき。 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
25 折しもエルザレムに、シメオンと云へる人あり。義人にして神を畏敬し、イスラエル[の民]の慰められん事を待ちて、聖霊の居給ふ所となり、 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
26 聖霊より、主のキリストを見ざるうちは、死せざる事を示されたりしが、 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
27 [聖]霊によりて、[神]殿に至りしに、恰も彼兩親孩兒イエズスを携へ、是が為に律法の慣例に從ひて行はんとて來りければ、 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,
28 シメオン孩兒を抱き、神を祝し奉りて云ひけるは、 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29 主よ、今こそ御言に從ひて僕を安樂に逝かしめ給ふなれ、 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
30 其は我目主の救を見たればなり。 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
31 是ぞ主が萬民の前に備へ給ひし者にして、 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
32 異邦人を照らすべき光、主の民たるイスラエルの光榮なる、と。 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
33 イエズスの父母は、孩兒に就きて云はれたる事を驚嘆したりしが、 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.
34 シメオン彼等を祝して、母マリアに云ひけるは、此子は、是イスラエルに於て、多くの人の堕落と復活との為に置かれ、且反抗を受くる徴に立てられたり、 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;
35 汝の魂も剣にて刺貫かるべく、而して多くの心の念顕るべし、と。 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
36 又アゼル族なるファヌエルの女に、名はアンナ[と云ひて]、既に至極の老年に及べる女預言者あり。處女の時より七年の間、夫と共に在りしに、 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;
37 寡婦となりて、齢八十四に至り、[神]殿を離れず、断食と祈祷とを以て晝夜奉事し居りしが、 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
38 是も同時に來りて、主を稱賛し、エルザレムに於て、贖罪を待てる人々に孩兒の事を語り居たりき。 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
39 [兩親は]主の律法の儘に何事をも果し、ガリレアのナザレトなる己が町に歸りしが、 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.
40 孩兒漸く成長して、智恵に満ち、精神の力彌増し給ひ、神の恩寵其上に在りき。 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
41 然て過越の大祝日には、兩親年毎にエルザレムに往き居りしが、 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
42 イエズス十二歳になり給ひし時、兩親祝日の慣例の儘にエルザレムに上りしに、 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
43 祝日過ぎて歸る時、幼きイエズスはエルザレムに留り給へり。兩親は之を知らず、 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
44 道連の中に在らんと思ひつつ、一日路を往き、然て親族知己の中を求めたれども、逢はざりしかば、 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
45 尋ねつつエルザレムに立歸りしに、 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
46 三日目に、イエズスが[神]殿にて學者の中に坐し、彼等に聞き且問ひ居給へるを見付けたり。 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 聞く人皆其智恵と應答とに驚き居たりしが、 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
48 兩親は之を見て感嘆せり。斯て母はイエズスに向ひ、子よ、何故我等に斯る事を為ししぞ。看よ、汝の父と我とは憂ひつつ汝を尋ね居たり、と云ひければ、 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 イエズス曰ひけるは、何ぞ我を尋ねたるや。我は我父の事を務むべきを知らざりしか、と。 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?
50 兩親は此語給ひし御言を暁らざりき。 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51 然てイエズス彼等と共に下り、ナザレトに至りて彼等に從ひ居給ひしが、母は此総ての事を心に納め居たりき。 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 斯てイエズス智恵も齢も、神と人とに於る寵愛も次第に彌増し居給へり。 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
