1 だれが知者のようになり得よう。だれが事の意義を知り得よう。人の知恵はその人の顔を輝かせ、またその粗暴な顔を変える。 Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man’s wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
2 王の命を守れ。すでに神をさして誓ったことゆえ、驚くな。 I counsel thee to keep the king’s commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.
3 事が悪い時は、王の前を去れ、ためらうな。彼はすべてその好むところをなすからである。 Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
4 王の言葉は決定的である。だれが彼に「あなたは何をするのか」と言うことができようか。 Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
5 命令を守る者は災にあわない。知者の心は時と方法をわきまえている。 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man’s heart discerneth both time and judgment.
6 人の悪が彼の上に重くても、すべてのわざには時と方法がある。 Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.
7 後に起る事を知る者はない。どんな事が起るかをだれが彼に告げ得よう。 For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
8 風をとどめる力をもつ人はない。また死の日をつかさどるものはない。戦いには免除はない。また悪はこれを行う者を救うことができない。 There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
9 わたしはこのすべての事を見た。また日の下に行われるもろもろのわざに心を用いた。時としてはこの人が、かの人を治めて、これに害をこうむらせることがある。 All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.
10 またわたしは悪人の葬られるのを見た。彼らはいつも聖所に出入りし、それを行ったその町でほめられた。これもまた空である。 And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.
11 悪しきわざに対する判決がすみやかに行われないために、人の子らの心はもっぱら悪を行うことに傾いている。 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
12 罪びとで百度悪をなして、なお長生きするものがあるけれども、神をかしこみ、み前に恐れをいだく者には幸福があることを、わたしは知っている。 Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:
13 しかし悪人には幸福がない。またその命は影のようであって長くは続かない。彼は神の前に恐れをいだかないからである。 But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
14 地の上に空な事が行われている。すなわち、義人であって、悪人に臨むべき事が、その身に臨む者がある。また、悪人であって、義人に臨むべき事が、その身に臨む者がある。わたしは言った、これもまた空であると。 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
15 そこで、わたしは歓楽をたたえる。それは日の下では、人にとって、食い、飲み、楽しむよりほかに良い事はないからである。これこそは日の下で、神が賜わった命の日の間、その勤労によってその身に伴うものである。 Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
16 わたしは心をつくして知恵を知ろうとし、また地上に行われるわざを昼も夜も眠らずに窮めようとしたとき、 When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)
17 わたしは神のもろもろのわざを見たが、人は日の下に行われるわざを窮めることはできない。人はこれを尋ねようと労しても、これを窮めることはできない。また、たとい知者があって、これを知ろうと思っても、これを窮めることはできないのである。 Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
