| 1 | ヨブは答えて言った、 | But Job answered and said, |
| 2 | 「どうかわたしの憤りが正しく量られ、同時にわたしの災も、はかりにかけられるように。 | Oh that my grief were throughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together! |
| 3 | そうすれば、これは海の砂よりも重いに相違ない。それゆえ、わたしの言葉が軽率であったのだ。 | For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up. |
| 4 | 全能者の矢が、わたしのうちにあり、わたしの霊はその毒を飲み、神の恐るべき軍勢が、わたしを襲い攻めている。 | For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me. |
| 5 | 野ろばは、青草のあるのに鳴くであろうか。牛は飼葉の上でうなるであろうか。 | Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder? |
| 6 | 味のない物は塩がなくて食べられようか。すべりひゆのしるは味があろうか。 | Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg? |
| 7 | わたしの食欲はこれに触れることを拒む。これは、わたしのきらう食物のようだ。 | The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat. |
| 8 | どうかわたしの求めるものが獲られるように。どうか神がわたしの望むものをくださるように。 | Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for! |
| 9 | どうか神がわたしを打ち滅ぼすことをよしとし、み手を伸べてわたしを断たれるように。 | Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off! |
| 10 | そうすれば、わたしはなお慰めを得、激しい苦しみの中にあっても喜ぶであろう。わたしは聖なる者の言葉を否んだことがないからだ。 | Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One. |
| 11 | わたしにどんな力があって、なお待たねばならないのか。わたしにどんな終りがあるので、なお耐え忍ばねばならないのか。 | What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life? |
| 12 | わたしの力は石の力のようであるのか。わたしの肉は青銅のようであるのか。 | Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass? |
| 13 | まことに、わたしのうちに助けはなく、救われる望みは、わたしから追いやられた。 | Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me? |
| 14 | その友に対するいつくしみをさし控える者は、全能者を恐れることをすてる。 | To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty. |
| 15 | わが兄弟たちは谷川のように、過ぎ去る出水のように欺く。 | My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away; |
| 16 | これは氷のために黒くなり、そのうちに雪が隠れる。 | Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid: |
| 17 | これは暖かになると消え去り、暑くなるとその所からなくなる。 | What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place. |
| 18 | 隊商はその道を転じ、むなしい所へ行って滅びる。 | The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish. |
| 19 | テマの隊商はこれを望み、シバの旅びとはこれを慕う。 | The troops of Tema looked, the companies of Sheba waited for them. |
| 20 | 彼らはこれにたよったために失望し、そこに来てみて、あわてる。 | They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed. |
| 21 | あなたがたは今わたしにはこのような者となった。あなたがたはわたしの災難を見て恐れた。 | For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid. |
| 22 | わたしは言ったことがあるか、『わたしに与えよ』と、あるいは『あなたがたの財産のうちからわたしのために、まいないを贈れ』と、 | Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance? |
| 23 | あるいは『あだの手からわたしを救い出せ』と、あるいは『しえたげる者の手からわたしをあがなえ』と。 | Or, Deliver me from the enemy’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty? |
| 24 | わたしに教えよ、そうすればわたしは黙るであろう。わたしの誤っている所をわたしに悟らせよ。 | Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred. |
| 25 | 正しい言葉はいかに力のあるものか。しかしあなたがたの戒めは何を戒めるのか。 | How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove? |
| 26 | あなたがたは言葉を戒めうると思うのか。望みの絶えた者の語ることは風のようなものだ。 | Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind? |
| 27 | あなたがたは、みなしごのためにくじをひき、あなたがたの友をさえ売り買いするであろう。 | Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend. |
| 28 | 今、どうぞわたしを見られよ、わたしはあなたがたの顔に向かって偽らない。 | Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie. |
| 29 | どうぞ、思いなおせ、まちがってはならない。さらに思いなおせ、わたしの義は、なおわたしのうちにある。 | Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it. |
| 30 | わたしの舌に不義があるか。わたしの口は災をわきまえることができぬであろうか。 | Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things? |
