1 エリフはまた答えて言った、 Elihu spake moreover, and said,
2 「あなたはこれを正しいと思うのか、あなたは『神の前に自分は正しい』と言うのか。 Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God’s?
3 あなたは言う、『これはわたしになんの益があるか、罪を犯したのとくらべてなんのまさるところがあるか』と。 For thou saidst, What advantage will it be unto thee? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin?
4 わたしはあなたおよび、あなたと共にいるあなたの友人たちに答えよう。 I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee.
5 天を仰ぎ見よ、あなたの上なる高き空を望み見よ。 Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou.
6 あなたが罪を犯しても、彼になんのさしさわりがあるか。あなたのとがが多くても、彼に何をなし得ようか。 If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him?
7 またあなたは正しくても、彼に何を与え得ようか。彼はあなたの手から何を受けられるであろうか。 If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand?
8 あなたの悪はただあなたのような人にかかわり、あなたの義はただ人の子にかかわるのみだ。 Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness may profit the son of man.
9 しえたげの多いために叫び、力ある者の腕のゆえに呼ばわる人々がある。 By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.
10 しかし、ひとりとして言う者はない、『わが造り主なる神はどこにおられるか、彼は夜の間に歌を与え、 But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;
11 地の獣よりも多く、われわれを教え、空の鳥よりも、われわれを賢くされる方である』と。 Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?
12 彼らが叫んでも答えられないのは、悪しき者の高ぶりによる。 There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.
13 まことに神はむなしい叫びを聞かれない。また全能者はこれを顧みられない。 Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.
14 あなたが彼を見ないと言う時はなおさらだ。さばきは神の前にある。あなたは彼を待つべきである。 Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.
15 今彼が怒りをもって罰せず、罪とがを深く心にとめられないゆえに But now, because it is not so, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth it not in great extremity:
16 ヨブは口を開いてむなしい事を述べ、無知の言葉をしげくする」。 Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.
