| 1 | わたしは、わたしの目と契約を結んだ、どうして、おとめを慕うことができようか。 | I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? |
| 2 | もしそうすれば上から神の下される分はどんなであろうか。高き所から全能者の与えられる嗣業はどんなであろうか。 | For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? |
| 3 | 不義なる者には災が下らないであろうか。悪をなす者には災難が臨まないであろうか。 | Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity? |
| 4 | 彼はわたしの道をみそなわし、わたしの歩みをことごとく数えられぬであろうか。 | Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps? |
| 5 | もし、わたしがうそと共に歩み、わたしの足が偽りにむかって急いだことがあるなら、 | If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit; |
| 6 | （正しいはかりをもってわたしを量れ、そうすれば神はわたしの潔白を知られるであろう。） | Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity. |
| 7 | もしわたしの歩みが、道をはなれ、わたしの心がわたしの目にしたがって歩み、わたしの手に汚れがついていたなら、 | If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands; |
| 8 | わたしのまいたのを他の人が食べ、わたしのために成長するものが、抜き取られてもかまわない。 | Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out. |
| 9 | もし、わたしの心が、女に迷ったことがあるか、またわたしが隣り人の門で待ち伏せしたことがあるなら、 | If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door; |
| 10 | わたしの妻が他の人のためにうすをひき、他の人が彼女の上に寝てもかまわない。 | Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her. |
| 11 | これは重い罪であって、さばきびとに罰せられるべき悪事だからである。 | For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges. |
| 12 | これは滅びに至るまでも焼きつくす火であって、わたしのすべての産業を根こそぎ焼くであろう。 | For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase. |
| 13 | わたしのしもべ、また、はしためがわたしと言い争ったときに、わたしがもしその言い分を退けたことがあるなら、 | If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me; |
| 14 | 神が立ち上がられるとき、わたしはどうしようか、神が尋ねられるとき、なんとお答えしようか。 | What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? |
| 15 | わたしを胎内に造られた者は、彼をも造られたのではないか。われわれを腹の内に形造られた者は、ただひとりではないか。 | Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb? |
| 16 | わたしがもし貧しい者の願いを退け、やもめの目を衰えさせ、 | If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; |
| 17 | あるいはわたしひとりで食物を食べて、みなしごに食べさせなかったことがあるなら、 | Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof; |
| 18 | （わたしは彼の幼い時から父のように彼を育て、またその母の胎を出たときから彼を導いた。） | (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;) |
| 19 | もし着物がないために死のうとする者や、身をおおう物のない貧しい人をわたしが見た時に、 | If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; |
| 20 | その腰がわたしを祝福せず、また彼がわたしの羊の毛で暖まらなかったことがあるなら、 | If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; |
| 21 | もしわたしを助ける者が門におるのを見て、みなしごにむかってわたしの手を振り上げたことがあるなら、 | If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate: |
| 22 | わたしの肩骨が、肩から落ち、わたしの腕が、つけ根から折れてもかまわない。 | Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone. |
| 23 | わたしは神から出る災を恐れる、その威光の前には何事もなすことはできない。 | For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure. |
| 24 | わたしがもし金をわが望みとし、精金をわが頼みと言ったことがあるなら、 | If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; |
| 25 | わたしがもしわが富の大いなる事と、わたしの手に多くの物を獲た事とを喜んだことがあるなら、 | If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much; |
| 26 | わたしがもし日の輝くのを見、または月の照りわたって動くのを見た時、 | If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; |
| 27 | 心ひそかに迷って、手に口づけしたことがあるなら、 | And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand: |
| 28 | これもまたさばきびとに罰せらるべき悪事だ。わたしは上なる神を欺いたからである。 | This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above. |
| 29 | わたしがもしわたしを憎む者の滅びるのを喜び、または災が彼に臨んだとき、勝ち誇ったことがあるなら、 | If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him: |
| 30 | （わたしはわが口に罪を犯させず、のろいをもって彼の命を求めたことはなかった。） | Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul. |
| 31 | もし、わたしの天幕の人々で、『だれか彼の肉に飽きなかった者があるか』と、言わなかったことがあるなら、 | If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied. |
| 32 | （他国人はちまたに宿らず、わたしはわが門を旅びとに開いた。） | The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller. |
| 33 | わたしがもし人々の前にわたしのとがをおおい、わたしの悪事を胸の中に隠したことがあるなら、 | If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom: |
| 34 | わたしが大衆を恐れ、宗族の侮りにおじて、口を閉じ、門を出なかったことがあるなら、 | Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door? |
| 35 | ああ、わたしに聞いてくれる者があればよいのだが、（わたしのかきはんがここにある。どうか、全能者がわたしに答えられるように。）ああ、わたしの敵の書いた告訴状があればよいのだが。 | Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book. |
| 36 | わたしは必ずこれを肩に負い、冠のようにこれをわが身に結び、 | Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me. |
| 37 | わが歩みの数を彼に述べ、君たる者のようにして、彼に近づくであろう。 | I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him. |
| 38 | もしわが田畑がわたしに向かって呼ばわり、そのうねみぞが共に泣き叫んだことがあるなら、 | If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain; |
| 39 | もしわたしが金を払わないでその産物を食べ、その持ち主を死なせたことがあるなら、 | If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life: |
| 40 | 小麦の代りに、いばらがはえ、大麦の代りに雑草がはえてもかまわない」。ヨブの言葉は終った。 | Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended. |
