1 しろがねには掘り出す穴があり、精錬するこがねには出どころがある。 Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it.
2 くろがねは土から取り、あかがねは石から溶かして取る。 Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone.
3 人は暗やみを破り、いやはてまでも尋ねきわめて、暗やみおよび暗黒の中から鉱石を取る。 He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
4 彼らは人の住む所を離れて縦穴をうがち、道行く人に忘れられ、人を離れて身をつりさげ、揺れ動く。 The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.
5 地はそこから食物を出す。その下は火でくつがえされるようにくつがえる。 As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.
6 その石はサファイヤのある所、そこにはまた金塊がある。 The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold.
7 その道は猛禽も知らず、たかの目もこれを見ず、 There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture’s eye hath not seen:
8 猛獣もこれを踏まず、ししもこれを通らなかった。 The lion’s whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.
9 人は堅い岩に手をくだして、山を根元からくつがえす。 He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots.
10 彼は岩に坑道を掘り、その目はもろもろの尊い物を見る。 He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.
11 彼は水路をふさいで、漏れないようにし、隠れた物を光に取り出す。 He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light.
12 しかし知恵はどこに見いだされるか。悟りのある所はどこか。 But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
13 人はそこに至る道を知らない、また生ける者の地でそれを獲ることができない。 Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
14 淵は言う、『それはわたしのうちにない』と。また海は言う、『わたしのもとにない』と。 The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.
15 精金もこれと換えることはできない。銀も量ってその価とすることはできない。 It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
16 オフルの金をもってしても、その価を量ることはできない。尊い縞めのうも、サファイヤも同様である。 It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
17 こがねも、玻璃もこれに並ぶことができない。また精金の器物もこれと換えることができない。 The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
18 さんごも水晶も言うに足りない。知恵を得るのは真珠を得るのにまさる。 No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
19 エチオピヤのトパズもこれに並ぶことができない。純金をもってしても、その価を量ることはできない。 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
20 それでは知恵はどこから来るか。悟りのある所はどこか。 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
21 これはすべての生き物の目に隠され、空の鳥にも隠されている。 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
22 滅びも死も言う、『われわれはそのうわさを耳に聞いただけだ』。 Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
23 神はこれに至る道を悟っておられる、彼はそのある所を知っておられる。 God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.
24 彼は地の果までもみそなわし、天が下を見きわめられるからだ。 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;
25 彼が風に重さを与え、水をますで量られたとき、 To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.
26 彼が雨のために規定を設け、雷のひらめきのために道を設けられたとき、 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
27 彼は知恵を見て、これをあらわし、これを確かめ、これをきわめられた。 Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
28 そして人に言われた、『見よ、主を恐れることは知恵である、悪を離れることは悟りである』と」。 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
